The one of the guy staring out the window has great potential and that last one of Kirk Hammet speaks for itself, it rules. The rest is not really my thing. The third from the top is a bit to anime influenced, and incase you didn't know (whisper) Anime style is like signing a death warrant here on CA (unwhisper) Or at least I get that impression.

But hey keep it up, i think the realistic style is more your thing though.

    Peace...

felt i should drop a little note for a fellow scot, there's no very many of us on here, at least thats what it seemed like when no one responded to a scotland thread in the 'local sketch group' threads :-p

anyway you show nice control over shading and you're getting some nice likeness in some of those portraits, but as everyone on here will point out, nothing makes you better faster than drawing from life. Although drawing every day will help you get better with whatever tool you are using.

and it is worth remembering that if it is hard work, you're probably learning something, draw more of your friends, it takes guts but it helps.

btw that tommy cooper is terrifying!!

the arms are too skinny, and the hands are too big, in the sword woman one, and the portrait of my brother's nose is just...wierd, and also it doesn't LOOL like him.

hey dont be down on yourself, the pics show confidance and developed skills that you can build on. I'm not going to tell you to do studies because you wrote that yourself earlier in the thread, just draw every day and enjoy it :-)

I've done 3 sketchbooks now (with the aim of enjoying drawing more) and i can see an improvement when i look back but i dont look for an improvement too much, i just look to enjoy it. studies mean progress means enjoyment means progress means enjoyment..... you get the idea ;-)

    keep drawing

    N

ps, post all you want here but adding a drawing or painting to each post is the best way to do it ;-)

that last sp is nice. great likeness is a good thing! yup yup. good.

the only problem is the neck. since the neck is pretty much a cylinder, shade with the contours, more side to side. use the lines of the shading to fill out the form of the neck.

    Lightbulb

Indeed, some great stuff going on here. Those hand studies are invaluable, I don't do nearly enough of them, and they're great practise.
The faces you're doing are mostly turning out very well too, Tommy Cooper, wahey!
That self portrait is lookin' good also. I like the way you throw colours in here and there, it definitely livens stuff up... if I look through my sketchbooks from last year, it was all pure pencil/pen stuff, no colour, and page after page of that just gets so boring. I'm doing a lot more colour stuff this year, it's fun

Keep at it, I wish I could have drawn that well when I was your age, I'd probably be much further on than I am now if I had! And as I say, doing figure/face/hand/foot studies is really really good practise, after a while you'll be able to draw stuff like that from any angle in any pose, without reference - and that's when stuff really starts to go wild!

Oh yeah, and Kirk Hammett ain't all that. If you've seen the Some Kind of Monster DVD, take a look at the Special Features, look for some extra footage called "tricky riff" or something like that, the guy can't play guitar!
Yeah, he looks the part, but he doesn't bring anything to the table when it comes to music. Draw Hetfield instead, he rocks so much more

Keep up the good work, lassie!

    -Paul

Great hands - now incorporate them into a drawing!

You look like you need to work on ref-free faces and bodies - the woman with the katana (?), for example, looks serene, possibly hypnotised\drugged, but the angle at which she's holding that sword is painful to hold (and that's without the weight of a weapon). Again, both this and the girl walking a dog are lacking decent hands - considering the other sketches you've posted, there's really no need for this.

Also, look at the drawings done with photo ref. Now, look at the others. Incorporate what you learn from reference in your no-ref images, otherwise it takes away much of the value of using it in the first place.

Good stuff, all in all - keep it up!

mOP Thank you! Yea, Im a reeeel fan of our Cooper, he fantastic.
And I totally agree!! kirk hammet is the worst guitar player, and he in METALLICA!!..... how does it work?

    yo yo

He he, you like Kirk Hamet don't ya? I see so much potential with this. I love the hands most of all, (you saw my thread..I'm an anatomy freak.) The portrait of Kirk has to be the the best one but the coolest (in my opinion) is the girl you drew in purple pencil with the short hair. The angle of the head and the expression is just way cool. But dang girl! Quit slammin yourself! You draw people like you were born to do it. I think you're really gonna get somewhere with this. Please keep working! --Sio

    Hey, Great improvement!
When painting try to avoid outlines, just block in the colour straight. I say this because the most recent painting has bits of black outline, which disrupt the harmony.
Other than that, Good paintings, nice use of colour
