    Landscape WIP

I appologise if this is in the wrong place to post this or not quite concept art. Its my A level (UK) school art project. The teachers have given me suggestions for improvments and I have my own ideas. I'd really apprieciate any comments / crits or suggestions. Sorry about the poor quality but I don't think I was likely to find a fitting scanner!

I'll try and explain the parts that arnt clear
The project title was "The Spirit of the Natural Enviroment" and I looked at Casper David Friedrich as an artist for inspiration, as well as John Howe and
    Alan Lee.

The idea of the foreground is that its a tree that has overgrown a derelict watchtower on a cliffside. The wall still needs alot of painting, and the tree is mainly in the highlight colours. I'd also like to show the bottom half of the tree in shadow, I really want to get across the sunlight streaming from the right side.

Again I want to show this by painting highlights on the cliffs on the right.

Below the foreground cliff is a river, no idea how i'm going to paint that yet.
And the trees really have just had the general masses rushed in, they need better colouring.

I'm aware alot doesn't look correct, the top of the tree for example, but i'm stuck for ideas to solve this. It just occured to me that I could cut them off, perhaps all the corners of the painting in a rounded way to follow the shape of the composition.

    Thanks for looking!
    scribblings!

The only thing I can think of is that your trying to cram a lot into a pretty small canvas, If you were to take the POV foward just a couple of feet then you would really get the idea of open space, which is what landscapes are all about. Keep posting!

Actually really good. I love that the tree and cliff create a cirlce that pulls the eye back around to the foreground, nice composition touch there.

Only thing that jumps at me, is that patch of very bright green just below the middle line. It's almost too bright, I'd like to see that toned a little down, to match with the trees to it's right. That should help unify the rest.

I think this is looking pretty good so far. The tree roots growing around the broken wall looks really good--if you bring the rest up to this level, I don't think you'll have anything to worry about.
If you want to hide that part of the tree up in the corner, perhaps add some leaves up there to cover it? Instead of cutting a rounded corner, you could just make the leaves somewhat follow that same shape and thus keep the eye in the composition.

    best of luck!
