Hello, long time lurker, first time sketchbooker!

I'm an animation student. I'm a bit shy about showing my stuff to people, so I've decided to just do it. Comments and criticism appreciated! I'm really hoping to improve.

I'm not that good at shading with pencil, and I have trouble with tonal stuff, so I decided to take a 5B and do some still lifes. I admit, I get quite impatient! As a result some of these don't really... turn out clearly.

Great to see you put some work up, nothing to be afraid of
If you're fighting the pencil a bit, have you ever experimented with toning the paper with some graphite shavings? Sometimes it's a little less daunting than the white of the page, I know it loosens me up.

I would agree with Mike L... tone the paper first, or draw on a mid-gray charcoal paper (with charcoal, obviously )

You'll find that charcoal is easier to control, value-wise, than graphite.

p sage: I didn't know that charcoal was easier, having never really used it. I'll give it a go!


As for toned paper, I actually found some light grey sheets in my closet, so I tried that out. Heres a sheet draped over a chair:
