    GAMBATTE ERIKU-SAN!

Bad me for not posting in here sooner! Your creatures, no matter how grotesque or odd they get, always make me smile. They all have an attractive, chunky and creative quality to them that makes your style easy to recognize

I really like the direction you're taking with your March 8th entry - your linework is more confident and you characters are so appealing. It's great to be able to see what goes through that mind of yours.

    MORE!

    Thanks Steph!

Just a quick sketch of a vague story idea that's been bouncing around my head the last few weeks and just won't leave me alone. I've only got a vague idea who these characters are and what they're doing, and I'm trying to work it all out.

Anutter page full o' sketches. YEEHA!

These are actually done on a Tabloid sized canvas at 300 dpi, so this is actually less than 20% actual size. I guess that's not an interesting or important fact, but I thought I should probably write more than one line with each entry. Gotta give the customer their money's worth!

I really enjoy the sketch of the man and the boy... it's dynamic and I can tell there's a story behind it. I'd like to see more!

Here's a sketch that popped out of me unexpectedly tonight.

This is an idea for the boy in that sketch up there of the boy and the man. Not quite there yet, but better than the indistinct blob he was previously.

It might be just a stylistic preference, but as it is now, his shoulders are so sloped that it looks like his backpack would just slip right off. Since he's very stylized though, that might be your intention. Love the expression!

    UNIBEARD!!

Ok, I'm done being a dork. Your character thumbs always make me smile, it makes sense that that's what goes on in your head, in my opinion.

I think the style you're working with for the boy is pretty good so far, and I agree with Saph on the expression. My only crit is that the head may be a smidge too real/detailed compared to the styling of the body, but that's your call.

Sarah: Yeah, you're definitely right. I added the backpack as kind of a last-minute detail and didn't even think about that. I think I probably overdid the sloping shoulders a tad anyway.

Steph: Hehehe, I don't think you're ever done being a dork. Well, at least something about what goes on in my head makes sense. You're right about the boy too. The body is a bit too stylized than what I was aiming for.

Last night I had a dream that I was at another CA workshop and I was hanging out with all you guys at a fast food joint or something and then I woke up and got all depressed that it wasn't real (then my dogs hopped into bed and got me all warm and comfy and I quickly fell back asleep and woke up at the crack of noon). Man, I cannot wait for Prague!

Would ya look at the size of that guy's head!! It's like an orange on a toothpick! I'm not kidding, it's like Sputnik! Spherical but pointy at parts!

He'll be crying himself to sleep tonight, on his huge pillow.

I just saw that movie recently. It was So I married an axe murderer, right?

Yeah Pixeldragoon, it was So I Married An Axe Murderer. Gotta love classic Mike Myers.

Awww, that really sucks you can't make it to Prague. Actually, I have no idea if I'll be able to save enough money by August, but I'm going to do everything I can to make it happen. You'd better make it to another one someday, or we'll have to kidnap you to it and replace you with a mannequin and a tape recorder to avert suspicion, Ferris Bueller-style.

I feel bad for making two posts in a row without any art, so here's something carbon-dating has estimated is from the 1992 era:

Last night I managed to trick myself into doing a couple hand studies. I didn't particularly enjoy it, but growing isn't always a barrel of fun.

My favourite dragons were always the really old, wise ones, so I went in that direction. He's based on a toad, obviously.

It's your dude: Thomas. Really enjoying your sketchbook; you've drawn some deminted shit! I think taking some time to study human anatomy will make a huge differance in the quality of your work. But who doesn't need more human anatomy? Your faces are hilarious, btw. If you get a chance, drop by my sketch book, and tell me what you think!
I still think that Budda Vending machine should have won (brilliant!)

Thanks for the C&C my dude Thomas!

Thanks Sarah! I thought so too. It's amazing the difference taking the time to find the right reference can make.

I kind of got suckered into going back to my old job, at least for a couple weeks, so I don't know if I'll be able to keep my drawing up for that time. Sitting and drawing all day at work kind of saps the fun out of sitting and drawing all night at home. But who knows! I have a good idea for the dream eater COW so I'm hoping to at least get that done. I wrote the description first, which is the opposite of the way I usually do it.

I've let this fall behind! Bad me! Here's some stuff I've done lately.

My COW #11: Dream Eater entry. This has gotten me a handful of votes, which I'm very proud of.

My original sketch for the Dream Eater. I'm very glad I started over, it was a pretty boring design. As you can see the micropenis was introduced rather early in the design process. I actually put it in there to emphasize the feeling of violation and rape, which is what I was mainly going for. That's why I changed the victim to a woman, and gave him those long fingers caressing her neck like a rusty spoon.

And here's a sneak preview at my COW 12 entry.

His legs and feet need work, but I like his head so far.

This is a picture I drew when I was 4 or so.

I thought it was pretty funny, but then I got thinking that it's actually not a bad creature design at all.

    So...

Those 3 last digis are really good man! I can understand why you got those votes with your dream eater - good stuff! The toaddragon is very cool. And I really dig the sketch from march 26th, very moody - hope you work on the story some more man!

Hahaha!! I ought to dig up some of my old stuff from the old days like that, that's great. That's something I think everyone should do sometime... maybe even as a Thunderdome. Redone designs from old doodles, oh yes.

EDD: Thanks! They both have 5 legs actually. Nobody notices the fifth leg on the new one. I'm just sneaky like that.

Fellah.: Thanks! I've been slowly working on the story in my head, but probably not as much as I should be if I ever want to do anything with it. Sooner or later I'll hit something that'll reinspire me and I'll go crazy on it again.

Sapphire: Yeah, I love redrawing old drawings. I actually redrew an entire sketchbook a couple years ago. I was actually thinking of starting a thread for people to do just that. I'll go do that now!

EDIT: I made the thread! Here it is!

My latest COW, for the topic Cloud Dweller. I am really happy with the environment, they're not usually my strong point. Probably my biggest self-crit is I went with my usual Ninja Turtle style hands. I really have to stop doing that.

Here's a sketch for the creature. I changed a few things in the final, made him bigger and less cartoony, gave him different ears (because I wanted him a little more ape-like and the ears on this one are a little too similar to my COW #9 Cute But Deadly creature), added some extra arms and actually drew his legs.

I love the COW. It's the best part of CA to come along in a while.

Oh boy, bad bad me for letting this go so long. Been in a bit of dry spell lately. Missed the last two COWs, and really haven't done anything besides the Scorpio-X83 lately. Motivation has just been at zero.

So tonight I finally forced myself into doing something!

It's not great, but I had no expectations at all going in so I'm happy with it.

Now to start this week's COW!

I really love the mood in that piece! I enjoy how your colors are muted and toned down; you have a tendency to usually use pretty bright colors. The water's gorgeous. I think it would be cool to see a little more texture on that structure, maybe shiny bits vs. the more dull bits, to give it some variety.

I forgot to thank you for your comment Sapphire! Thank you! I totally agree with what you said.

Thought I'd post my COW from this week here. I have a bad habit of using multiple pictures to illustrate my concept. Next week it's one picture, no exceptions!

    Stumpbill Stomper

The Stumpbill Stomper is the heaviest known flying species of bird. Unlike most birds, its skeletal structure is thick and sturdy. It has immensely strong wings and legs, which allow it to fly despite its heavy frame. However, the birds have very little stamina and are not able to fly long distances at a time. Unable to migrate to warmer climates, the Stumpbill spends its winters hibernating underground. After gorging itself on whatever food it can find for a week or two, the Stumpbill begins its ascent. It flies directly upward for a matter of hours, expending all its energy to get as much altitude as possible. Once the bird has used up the last of its stamina, or the air gets too thin for the bird to fly any higher, the Stumpbill tucks in its wings and goes into a freefall. The Stumpbill hits the ground, beak-first, with enough force to bury itself ten to twenty feet underground. The impact knocks it unconscious, but its sturdy frame usually prevents any major injuries. That is, unless it misses the soft earth of the hills and lands in the rocky valley. Just be thankful I don't have an illustration of that tragic scenario.

The top half of that bird is fabulous, especially the eye! It has a lot of roundness and life to it. However, the bottom half of the bird is much weaker, and I think the feet need more attention. It looks like there's no weight on them, and for a supposedly heavy bird, you really need to show that weight-bearing bone structure.
