Sapphire: For my mechanical stuff, I usually use a lot of brushes made out of random objects chopped out of photos. I basically just start throwing down lots of random shapes, mostly to define the silhouette, and then refine from there. Then at the end I usually throw some photo textures on top as well.

TheJester: Thanks man, that's some good advice. I'll definitely keep that in mind.

    Mihail: Thanks!

donkeyslayer: Thanks, it was great hanging out with you too.

octopus_interphone: Thanks! I'm not sure how long it took total, but it was a lot of hours. Let's just say I had to take full advantage of every deadline extension.

Idiot Apathy: Totally man, I had a blast! Thanks.

And just because I don't want to have two posts in a row with no art, here's a quicky I hope I haven't posted before.

Dude that Steampunk Star Wars has me amazed. I wonder, did you try it in sepia tone? Of course that might be a dumb question. It might make them look too western.

    Thanks for the comments guys!

I actually started this illustration nearly a year ago. I wasn't at all happy with it, and just recently I got inspired to try another go at it. I tore it apart and made it into something I'm quite happy with.

I never did fix that stupid gun design, though.

Don't mind the lengthy biography, I know nobody's going to bother to read that whole thing. The more I flesh out this (version of the) world in my head, the longer I take to describe the characters (this is already half the length it was originally). I really need to be more concise. I just find my own ideas so damn interesting that I'm sure the whole world wants to read them in excruciating detail.

Lady Leia Organa, Princess of Alderaan

Alderaan was once considered the cultural and artistic heart of the galaxy. Although the Empire claimed dominion over all planets, it left Alderaan largely to govern itself, wary of inciting revolt on such a powerfully influential world.

As a member of Alderaan's royal family, Leia grew up in the lap of luxury. During her childhood she was widely adored as a public darling, famous for her curly hair and her performances of the Alderaan Global Anthem at royal events. However, as a teenager she suddenly withdrew from the public spotlight and began studying at a private school. This withdrawal coincided with the unprecedented government censorship of a popular musical (Gilbert & Snootles' HMS Executor, a comic opera that was highly critical of the Empire), an act which drew much ire from the people of Alderaan, who saw it as the royal family bowing to Imperial pressure.

When she turned 17, Leia joined the Alderaanian military (although the royal family was not technically exempt from Alderaan's mandatory year of military service, Leia was the first princess in over 400 years to actually serve her time). After two years in the service, she had become an adept marksman and had even led a number of peacekeeping missions in Rodian territories. It is believed that it was during this time that she joined the Resistance, and may have even had a hand in organizing it into the significant force it became.

Soon after, Leia finished her studies and became an ambassador. Her fiery, confident personality and sharp intellect made her a very strong and influential diplomat extremely critical of Imperial policies. Her speeches and public image were instrumental in generating sympathy for the rebel cause. Using her diplomatic connections and consular ship to gain access to highly guarded information and smuggle supplies, she was an integral member of the Resistance.

Nice I really love it! I like the way you use colors I still have to study that but I will do that after I feel a bit confident with some anatomy studies.Maybe If I'm getting bored with anatomy I'll just try painting for a start!

    nyssa, Kfeeras: Thanks!

I've been slacking on the drawing lately, at least outside of work. Even though I haven't been flexing my drawing muscles, I have been concepting creatures like mad, thanks to the Spore Creature Creator.

Bah! Less Creature Creator, more *painting* what you'd make in Creature Creator (at the very least)!

Just kidding, we all need a break sometime. Some excellent work you have here. One thing I did notice at one time or another though: a lot of the time when your pictures focus on one or two characters, I can't help but feel the character is aware of the "camera's" presence... This isn't the case with *all* of your pictures, but still a few of them; and even if they're not looking directly at the camera, thinking they're aware of its presence can end up making the shot look staged or fake slightly.

Try practicing having something in shot or out of shot that is drawing ALL of the characters attention: their body language attempting to dodge something that's been thrown at them by a character out-of-shot, them looking at something above them / not at the camera with a shocked look on their face etc, instead of smiling almost like they are posing.

I'm not attacking your work or anything; it looks fantastic, but there's no such thing as a "perfect picture", though constructive feedback can help you get as close as you possibly can to it.

Hey Eric, it was cool hanging out with you in NZ, how's Canada these days?

This whole Steampunk Starwars project looks really cool, man. That pixelart TDome was freakin' awesome...

I hafta give you a hard time on some stuff though...you've got an overall tendency to make everything too soft and blobby. Beware those soft-edged brushes man! unless everything you're making is chrome and plastic it tends to a bad habit...for one thing all your shapes start to look like they were squeezed out of a toothpaste tube. Case in point: too many of your characters have limbs that are just tubes and sausage-style fingers and toes (by contrast, your faces DO look pretty good).

You've got a bunch of cool ideas for mechanical designs, but they deserve to be in three dimensions and more understandably rendered...you want to be communicating the forms, not just suggesting them.

As to the spore creatures well...they really do show what's probably your greatest strength: prolific creativity.

But, they tend to reinforce your main bad habit: lazy abstracted shapes. So...do a painting of each and every one of these beasties with muscles, bones, and tendons under their skin. DO EET!
sketchbook...a kitten dies every time you don't comment

“When forced to work within a strict framework,
the imagination is taxed to its utmost – and will
produce its richest ideas. Given total freedom,
the work is likely to sprawl.”

    - TS Eliot

Bludhund: Thanks for the critique man, you hit the nail on the head. That's a problem I've known I had for a while, but I really need to get a reminder that I need to shake it now and then. It was great hanging out with you in NZ too!
