To get a real life look, just working on the skin is not enough. You need to work on the eyes, the lips and the hair as well.
lol I don't doubt that..but ...gotta start somewhere
color temperature changes.. if you're working from a photo, itll be nearly impossible to fake unless you got experience in paintign from life

You will also need to clearly establish your light source to develop realistic highlights and shadows.
