Whew, impressive sketchbook padtzon.

You've got a good feel for value, I love the way you've shaded your stuff in some of the first pages. Reminds me of what I should be doing. Fun to see those first digital experiments too.
Was just browsing trough the life studies and random drawings when suddenly... sexing people!, anime!!!. Nice diversity

Make sure you keep updating though! I like the last update, you haven't lost your touch. "Poot" seems a little off, but the rest seem pretty good. Your humans feel very 'human' so to say. Not as if 'straight from the book'.

And your language looks odd.

Liking the studies. Keep doing those.

Right now, I think you should work on your lines and line quality. This can be practiced while doing studies, so you can work on two things at once! Try not to go over the same lines too many times, be confident in your strokes and believe that you only need one chance to get that line right. Your line weight variation looks good when you take the time, if you'd then clean up the lines a bit, it could be really great.

edit: Don't know if it's the paper or your pencil or what, but your lines look very grainy. Or maybe it's the scanner/camera? Anyway, I think it might distort the real value of your lines. Not sure though. Have you experimented with different linds of paper/pencils?

Hi, Anders! Thanks for the crit. Yeah, sometimes I really "feel" the drawing, but most of the time I do "exploring" especially when I'm trying to find the pose.

I think my lines look grainy because of the scanner. The values do become more lighter. Do you have any recommendations on what to do?

You've been busy again!
The linework does look a bit grainy at the start, different from your earlier work, as if you're "trying out" again. Nice studies though, anatomy and form seems mostly right. Not quite sure about the first one in #97; mainly chest/pelvic area. And the NSFW one; he's either with his face on the chair, or has his head inside her. Doubt whether that was intended, you never know tho >_>
Nice stuff in #100; 2nd scan is a bit hard to see, but some nice figure drawing overall. Those last drawings look nice and clean again.. especially that bed sheet. Been missing those for a while!
Good practicing on the swordfighters.

Apologies for the lack of updates!

Here are some studies of folds. All copied from this cool handout I found on the net. Really, really helpful!

The other 2 are studies of heads copied from magazines. I really enjoyed doing these, and I'll definitely be doing more. My advice for doing this kind of stuff is to analyze. Don't just draw what you see. Think about the light, form, planes, etc.

#103:
Nice folds studies; very inspirational. Those 'crushes and pulls', and using the blue pencil for the body work really well. Seems like a good method for studying this. Tough topic, clothing, but you did a load of studies.

I'm loving those heads; most seem very smooth and natural. You can see the line work very well in that first scan especially. Nice to see how you shaded those, with the cross hatching and how you angled the lines to indicate the planes and shadows.
The 2nd scan seem to be some shorter studies. I don't see (m)any construction lines, don't you use those? or do you erase them in the process? Either way; good stuff. Only think the one in the top right looks a little odd (although I don't know your ref)

Looking good; can't miss Nicholas Cage with that distinct face. 2nd looks Audrey Tautou/Julia Roberts -ish. Not sure about 3, though I think its the best drawing. Liking the strong lighting on 1 and 3. The girl is a funny drawing. No outline or lineart, just strokes resembling a face together. Any special method used here? or pencils.

Nice to see from you again; those heads especially are pretty strong.

#103: You're correct on your observations. I was just focusing on planes for most of these head drawings. The 2nd scan was actually the very first one I did, and those were done rather quick to test my analyzing skills( not really aiming for %100 accuracy). So you were also right in guessing that I did not use any construction lines for some of those. Sometimes I just go at it and see where it will lead me.

#104: At least you recognized one of them! haha. The pretty woman is Audrey Hepburn. For her drawing, I only used tone to describe the light by using the side of the pencil(Loomis has a lot of examples from his books). The only time I used line was to describe dark accents. Like that line between the upper lip and lower lip. Other accents could be eyebrows, eye lashes, dimples, etc. For Nicolas Cage I really focused on the planes. The last one is an image of Clive Owen from Sin City. I would say I used both approaches for this one. This one was the most difficult because of the pose, lighting, etc. But, again, all of these head drawings were drawn by just analyzing light, forms, planes, etc. I wasn't aiming for spot-on accuracy. I personally think that this is what drawing is about. It's not about just drawing what you see and not knowing what it is you're drawing.

There's definitely alot I can learn from you, Patdz! You've really captured the familiarity in the features of the faces. May I suggest working with a variety of dry media? Different hardnesses in pencils, and/or using charcoal would definitely help improve the value ranges in each piece. =)

Recently I've been using Photoshop to scan. I scan it 300 dpi. It seems better than before.

So you're using File>Import>Your scanner? That's the tip I got (along with scanning it in big, which you're already doing), so that's about as far as my knowledge goes. Anyway, your latest post does look a bit better regarding scanning quality.

As for your actual drawings; great faces, you've really captured the likeness.

Enrigo: I always loved the way Otomo drew his characters. So simple in comparison the usual way anime/manga characters are depicted. So, yeah, I guess I was influenced by him.

I knew I've seen that face before, I did watch Sin City. Think you're right there too, and you did well on those forms/shapes

Soldier; You make it look easy. Nice sketch. Unsure of the legs, think they could use a little more shape. To show where exactly different parts start/end, and what he's wearing.
Characters; Yea, I can recognize the akira feel, like enrigo mentioned. Off topic; didn't quite always like style myself, some of the bigger heads annoyed me. Now I'm not familiar with cell-shaded stuff. But can't you use the sharpness to depict the material? Like a smoother color transition on the skin, but sharper on the shoes and such? Some well placed lines on those folds etc.

#113:
Kicks ass. Great contrast. I like how the child is coloured the same as those people. I think those drawings on the pavement take take some of the depth away. For example, the round circles at the top should probably be a little flatter. Powerful piece. Think it might have been even stronger if you had one or two people passing by on the lower side.

#114:
Nice value sketches. Think the only thing that's missing is some sharpness in your focal point, or stuff that's closeby. Or isn't that the point of a value sketch? ;o I like bottom left the most.

#117:
Fun stuff. Good expressions with just a few lines.
