glowing in ps

we've all seen good computer coloring jobs that have these great glowing effects depicting either metallic reflections, lights, or supernatural auras or something of that nature. my question is...how the hell do you do that? my first guess is a color with a bit of gaussian blur but that doesnt seem to help.

suggestion?

You can use your paintbrush and change the mode to "Color Dodge" and adjust your opacity so it is'nt too intense all at once...Or you Can use the "Dodge Tool" It all depends on what you are trying to Acheive..Photo? or Painting..

One of the very first brushes in the default Photoshop 7 brushes list is a blurred edged solid brush, if I had to do some kind of light/aura thing, I would use that at a lower opacity.

Thats my guess anyway.

Both the use of the soft brush and setting it to the "dodge" mode seems to make sense, thanks for the suggestions.
