    Big in Japan

    Hello all,

I am just an amateur with a Canon 10D and a Canon EF 17-40 f4.0L lens. I went to Japan for 3 weeks and took over 1000 pics Here are a few...please let me know what you all think, good and bad! They have been colour corrected with Photoshop.

    Thank you for your time,

    Funkylizard

I really like the little girl. Her painted nails held up to her face like that just add so much. Good job.

Thanks Emily. That girl is from a district in Tokyo called Harajuku. It's an area where on the weekends, all these girls come there and dress up in costumes. They sort of just hang out and it's a popular place for tourist to go and take pictures. I can't take credit for the pose, that was her own when I ask if I could take her picture

    Added a few more pics...

Love the first one. Technolandscape black&white architecture shot.
In fact most of your b&w-ish photo's make a lot of sense. You seem to tone a lot of pictures differently, turns out quite well. Good stuff!

I love 3 and 7. The Harajuka girl is very nicely shot. Did you check out Shibuya at all? I've heard the colors of the costumes there are even more impressive.

I also like your last image very much. You are putting that 10D to good use!

Thanks for the comments! I went to Shibuya but didn't see them. Where abouts in Shibuya? I am returning to Japan for 10 days in a week so I would love to check it out

Wow, these are pretty good! Im impressed by the composition, breath taking landscapes, and the colors are amazing! I love photography like this. My favs would have to be the girl in the 3rd photo, as well as the 4th and the very last one. Seen professional documentary photography on that level. The others are good, but those I think are your strongest ones there. Great job again!

Hope to see some more pictures of Japan! I would love to go and do something like that myself someday.

Hey, I just wanted to say that these are great photos.
They remind me of my trip to Spain...why?

Well on my flight to Spain we had a stop-over in Japan for one night. We landed at Tokyo/Narita airport and stayed at one of the airline hotels in Narita.
The guy at the hotel told us to go and see the 24 hour temple in Narita...so we ended up wandering around for ages, not knowing where we were going.
Eventually I asked this guy in a sushi place and he showed me on the map where to go.
We went down this little street down a hill and all the buildings seemed to be getting older looking. Suddenly we approached a gate, stepped up to it and BAM there was this MASSIVE Japanese temple! It was all dark and foreboding and deserted- the area was totally silent.
There was a long walkway up toward the temple that was flanked by stalls that during the day would surely have been food stalls and stuff like that...
Anyway, we walked up the long walkway, up the big flight of stairs, under a HUGE lantern that I had to duck to get under...up over a bridge through a garden of willow trees and big headstone kinda things...up more stairs to a huge open plaza type area.
Just as I got to the actual main temple building (up more stairs) and walked inside I heard my friends calling from outside. In the 30 seconds I was inside it had suddenly started *pouring* rain.
Well, we had to run all the way back to the bus stop...we ran out of that temple and up through the streets of Narita in the pouring rain....it was so great!
When we got to the bus stop, none of the other people who were going back to the hotel had gotten wet or even known it had rained...

And that's my experience in Japan- your temple roof photos reminded of it

For some reason that last picture nearly moved me to tears. Photography never has that effect on me. No matter what I see through it. I can only imagine what it would have been like had I been there at that instant. My wife and I both want nothing more than to take about a month long visit to Japan one day. One of these days....

It's crazy how stuff like that sneaks up on you, isn't it? Me, I burst out sobbing during the "Heaven or Hell" scene in the Kenneth Branagh version of Hamlet... You know, the one that they brilliantly chose to film in a confessional...

Oh yeah, and Pics 1 and 3 I especially like. I don't understand anything about photography beause I'm so bad at it, but I know when something looks cool and makes me think about it differently than it would if I'd seen it in real life...
