Icon Tensai Cityscapes - Ink Figure Series!!! - pg6; 10 Aug

    hi all,

ive been checking out the forum for a while, love some of the work here and it is about time to jump in and post something myself.
first work is a portrait of tokyo, drawn by hand, 'painted' in photoshop. because the size is 75 x 50 cm i put some crops up as well; one of the foreground, one of the back.

im here to learn something so comments/praise/critique are all appreciated.

i've noticed that on some monitors the colors are really of though, but anyway, here it goes...

ken - thanks for the reply. your comment summarizes what i think are the strong and weak points in this illustration. making it overwhelming is exactly what i tried to do here. it sacrificed focussing and ease of 'reading' though. but that is how i feel about this place, so...

    Fascinating...

...interesting use of color. I like the clutter.

I find when I look at a cityscape at night, my eyes are drawn to the occasional spark of unusual light, like neon signs and so forth. Your piece captures that. The blue is more twilight, which adds a different mood than, say, black. It's also kind of whimsical, like a parody of urbanism.

heyyy, just went to the library to get some music, i come back, people actually take a look! thanks for the comments.

ill do a quick reply cause i have to start working...

drawing took me i think three days and my back. colors i did mostly in three values cause of the size of this thing and it stil took me two/three days and my hand.

im doing one right now that is i think twice as complex as this one so im in way over my head, but then again thats how i felt with doing this one...

qstom: whally is in there somewhere man. if you see him tell him he owes me 50 bucks though..

cinc2020: thanks man glad to see the mood coming across..

    wafflehouseninja/black frog/chingwa
i slept allright - during the day. the only way to do this for me is at night so...

here is one more midlevel crop. just a bit zoomed-in compared to the first one. ill post some more stuff soon!

It looks even more busy cropped...

I would suggest haveing the buildings in the back darker than the ones in the front. I think that might help.

yo man - thanks for all the props!
el coro man, seeing some of your sketchbook stuff is what drove me here!!
checked out your man choe - very nice and loose stuff he has there.

dns2k - this was the first time i did this hyperdetailed thing.. i'll post some more stuff soon - i tried to get this new piece finished last night but im not done with it yet.

this site is the bomb though. so many good work here, nice to have sections for learning/sketching, and it really makes you wanna go and draw.

    thanks alot,

    Duct City

well, really wanted to post something new but when this baby was finally finished i had problems hosting it. anyway here it goes.

made this one a bit more loose then the tokyo cityscape. again, lines with pen on paper, color with wacom in photoshop.

    any comments/praise/critique appreciated.

the top one looks like cd art, like the new beastie boys. the second one is good, but it seems too patternd and similar throughout, and like whats his name said, not much depth. still cool though.

imglue, ivandashsmith; thanks for your comments.

when looking at the second pic, i agree the piece could have more depth. it is ment as a sort of wall though, a vertical organisation of factory stuff - with an industrial ravine (is that english? abyss or valley are other words that pop up) as the result. with the big horizontal pipe on the upper-left side crossing from one side to the other..

also on my monitor the whole thing is a bit more dark and has more contrast so the foreground comes more forward.

imglue, saw your sketchbook thread the other day, nnice stuff man
    anyway cheers,

last two are much stronger than the over head and far shots. as was mentioned, there's no real sense of depth or atmosphere with them. but the bottom pictures focusing on concentrated areas and bulidings are very nice.

I am blown away! Those last two were fantastic, especially the first of those last two, the one with more brown tones. I don't know how you manage to get the perspective on all those little lines correct, I'd like to know how long this took, and how you go about making an environment like this.

    *checks out the train thing*

    thanks for the comments everyone.

    - euphony: its funny how most peeps like the last two better. they were way easier to make. i think i tried to make it too big and too detailed in the upper ones and 'couldnt' go back in and redo stuff, cause another pass would take another week.

    - pringle: thanks man, thats good to hear from a man like yourself. i really like the atmosphere and suggestions/looseness in your pieces. wanna trade some art?

    - csteingart: i got a website? glad you like the pics. really need to update though.

    - PaintMonster: haha -glad i made you feel all whoowhooo. i use these cheap kuretake pens that you can buy at the conbini for these. that or hi-tec c or whatever. i ink, scan, make prints in between and draw some more lines etc. back and forth between paper and the mac.
    どうもどうも、ウェブサイトも見てくれてうれしいわ。
    モンスターの作品も見せてな。。

    - vcoleman: i was thinking of making a sketchbook, or making this into one. would also be nice to show something else than buildings i guess. maybe i ll start something.

    - Sapphire: well you can work from reference, thats a start. i shoot a lot of pics. that being said there are a lot of ways to get prespective right. set-up perspective grids on paper, or in ps/painter. or if you want in 3d (takes a lot of time though..) basically i do lines, scan and put on a multiply layer and then paint in a layer underneath, and above that. than i often print and draw some more lines, scan etc. i check values regularly by having a desaturate adjustment layer on top of everything. i also flip canvas to keep my eyes fresh and keep painting for a while in flipmode. but do whatever you like and makes it happen.
