Quick late night speedpainting

Hey guys, I'm pretty much a noob on this site (i've posted a few things here and there in the past) but I thought it would be good for me to start posting some things here again. I'm am trying for at least one 35 min speedpainting a night...we'll see how that goes. Anyway, I see a lot of good stuff here, please keep posting and please feel free to critique the hell out of anything I post.

Munin Raven - I'd love to see you post some more of those juicy landscapes...its got me wanting to copy more from the landscape masters again. I've been looking at some of the Russian landscape painters recently and had to do this quick sketch of one of Isaak Levitan's paintings.

I finally picked up PS this past weekend and I'm in love with it already. I had been using Painter for the past 5 or 6 years and I never got used to it...oh well, here's the sketch - 35mins

I got my Wacom Intuos 3 in the mail about 3 days ago and struggled to draw circles at first. I think a lot of people in the professional field use a lot of custom brushes and air brushing techniques to get that sheen on their paintings.
This wasn't exactly a speed painting, but this time I was able to draw the hand on the correct way...reaper in the forest ^^

It's great, has a lot of potential. The tools mimic their traditional counterparts almost perfectly, it's brilliant. I only have a hard time using it because I'm just beginning to paint, and as a cell-shading junkie blending can be total hell for me.

Here's a speedpainting that I tried to carry a bit further than I normally do.
This is definitely an area that I need to improve on...taking these speedies to a more finished state without loosing the impact that the first 30-40 minutes produced.

Here's a quickie...I've recently switched to a mouse to do my paintings (at least in the beginning stages).....does anybody have any thoughts on this? I know that Craig Mullins started out by doing his paintings with a mouse and he said that he thought it helped his ability as a painter because he was forced to actually thing about the shapes he was painting. I feel that it helps with my nasty tendency to "lick" at a painting as opposed to me actually thinking about shape design and local values. Anyway here is a painting I did shortly after receiving a copy of photoshop. I mentioned that I wanted to to try to post at least once a night...so far that has not happened, but hopefully I will get in the habbit of doing that.

blazingthoughts: I will say that I will try to critique work that you post (and that goes for anyone...although I don't feel I am qualified). I think that even though this is viewed simply as a speedpainting thread, I don't see anything wrong with critiquing those who request it. I say this because I feel like posting in the critique section requires a certain level of finishedness that I don't always shoot for in a speedpainting. I would love for us all to post more "speedpaintings" and then give each other honest feedback...kind of like how they were doing on the Sijun forum when Craig Mullins was posting...I think it will benefit everyone..so........first off, blazingthoughts, I would say paint more from life...see the boat painting from Munin---you can tell thats something that has been worked out from life, and the ideal thing is to apply those principles to working from imagination....

Here's the quickie I was talking about....go easy..I'm still getting used to photoshop.

Munin, please keep them coming, love looking at your sketches...what is your setup in the field? Right now the only thing I have that is portable is my nintendo DS.

Godzilla: Great to see you post something here. Always love seeing your work. Really dig the way you place figures in a scene and carve them out.

Artem: Cool sketch. Nice and melancholic. As for what I use for plein-air, I was using an old laptop held together with rabbit shit and twigs, but I recently switched to a cute little netbook. It's small enough that I can actually paint with it still in my bag. I threaded some wire into the hem so I can bend the flap out and form a little lap tent. Really helps with screen glare, although I've received a few dodgy looks from dog walkers! I usually bust out my DS as well, but haven't done anything on it recently. Hope to see some DS speedies from you.

Regarding using the mouse, I used to paint with it on my beloved Amiga, but would never dare use it now. Too scared. It makes sense what Mullins said, but I assume he was merely referring to it as a byproduct of his having to use a mouse when he was a kid. I would be very surprised if Mullins went on to recommend using a mouse as a way of achieving better control and forethought. It seems to me there are much better ways to consciously strive for better, more forceful mark making and economy. The idea of a self imposed handicap - particularly regarding physical tools - seems the wrong way to go to me. I would rather impose other limitations, like limiting yourself to bigger brush sizes and not using layers etc... That way you are not relying on the limitations of a tool to force changes, but rather how you make and control marks in the first place i.e. tackling the problem head on.

Having said that, I'm just a part time scribbler so take my thoughts with a pinch of salt. I will say that I try to tackle my digital problems from the traditional perspective. How would I go about painting this if I was using linen and turps and oils, and a small whipping boy to mix my colours? I can usually arrive at a decent answer, although putting it into practise is obviously another matter.

Anyway, thanks for posting your thoughts. It's nice to come here and actually think about stuff instead of just dumping a paint and moving on.

Munin: Thanks for the input, you have a good point. It will be healthier for me to fix the problem in my head as opposed to giving myself the handicap. One thing I could do is constantly tell myself to keep the stylus connected to the wacom as much as possible...

I had to give a little chuckle when you talked about getting weird looks from dog walkers...but it sounds like you've got a pretty cool setup.

I've misplaced the equipment that I used to transport stuff from my DS to the computer but as I type this I think I recall that there might be a way to just send it with WiFi...I'll look into that.
