OBX, thanks for the vote of confidence, I do love to draw without reference, but always get to a point where I don't know how to take it further, I gotta work on that !

Heroic, uh, what can I say ... tiny update it shall be once more (hangs head in shame). I do draw, just don't update ... for the record .

no ref on these, and I think I like how they came out. Drawn after lotsa heads from ref and Nicolaides gesture excercises. Now I gotta do moooooore.

Keep your lines cleaner http://users.pandora.be/Decryptor/im...2006_01_21.jpg you'll need that in order to control overlap which gives dimension. For example on the bottom guy's legs there is overlap at the calves and hamstrings, but since there a bunch of other little marks going on this is lost. I like the organization of the tones of the figure on this newset one: dark for the skirt, medium for the top and legs, then light for the skin. The chest and face are dirtied up a bit though, which ruins that organization/rhythm of these 5 shapes. It also has an appealing linear rhythm which you did a good job of emphasizing with the silhuette, and nice variation of the pose which adds some dynamism: the weight is on one leg which forces up the hip, which causes the shoulders to tilt. Once again I'll say to simplify your line http://users.pandora.be/Decryptor/im...2006_01_23.jpg, like on the top profile there are a bunch of little lines for the forehead and brow eminence which can be reduced to four, the artists job is to simplify. The old man is done better. It's okay to start with sketchy lines, but it's also an important exercise to refine and edit those lines.

your work shows promise but you need more real life drawing to make the drawings from imagination more lively, they look stiff and uncomfortable. try to draw with continuous, flowing strokes and not the sketchy, unsure chicken scratch. i would suggest semi blind contours-only making a mark w/ your eye on the model/reference-only looking at your page for placement and scale. this will help you to not only improve your line quality but will force you to seek out the most descriptive lines, adding weight, life and accuracy to your drawings as well as making you more efficient, ie. less time spent.

also when drawing figures start from the hips to the legs and then work your way up to the head after fleshing out the back. i have found this to be an excellent excercise that helped me to solve alot of my proportion issues.

armando & kyi_72, thanks for the C&C, gives me a lot to think about & work on !

    A few more pages:

    71
from yesterday, photoref, tried a bit different rendering

    72
from today, rendered skull & eye from before the C&C

    73
also from today, not so fast gestures (there's a lot of detail, but it got lost in the scan)
I tried to take the crits into account in 72 & 73 (no chicken lines, cleaner art, efficient lines), but I see no difference with before, so it'll take some practice .

    hi nightvision

nice quality in the siren drawings,
The one with the boy is from a pro. The strokes are full of expression. You should push further on that way.

    good luck

I thought about waiting till I got a bit better and start a new sketchbook thread, but it's an uphill struggle lately, so I might as well post here. A few bits & pieces from the last few months:

You're not satisfied with your current work because you are improving. Get used to it, I feel this way all the time. But you gotta post as you go so we can see the progress. Otherwise there's no basis for comparison.

There's a great progress visible, just don't give up, post more updates. I really like the first and the third drawing in the last update. Keep it up!
