Good to hear you're still getting the chance to draw and I'm looking forward to the post.

Couple of quickies to get back into the mood of art. I've put it off for so long, and I can tell the difference.
Again, some little shits to get myself back to art. I falsely assumed that I had an understanding of human anatomy and that it would all come back when I came back. WRONG! Turns out I had a poor grasp to begin with. In retrospect none of this art is very great. I'm seeing so many errors.

A few more quickies. Broke down and started my study of the muscular system. Well, "broke down" is a bad way to put it. More of a "got sick of not having the muscular system down." Just the basic start to get the grasp of the upper body.

Nice hands, Chris. There's some good rendering going on, but remember to think of the whole object first. If you focus too much on the individual bits, you'll end up with a well rendered, but flat, piece.
On the muscle ref, I'd like to see some more line weight variation. Remember that for the most part, lines represent value shifts, with the heavier lines indicating a greater shift.
Good to see you back.
The dragon screams of the same mistake all my pieces have, and trust me, I took note of it. Always the same: great rendering, not so great in regards to the whole. Flat pieces, if you will. This was a project I'd started before and am working towards again.
You take the plating on the second dragon shot for example. It looks great inasmuch as concept and rendering, but it doesn't FEEL like it belongs yet. Not until it becomes more rounded. We'll see where is ends up.
The muscle study was quick and imprecise, but I see what you mean. Next study I'll focus more on a precise version.

Hey there, just had a look through your sketchbook and theres a lot of exciting work going on, especially with your ink work. Id love to see some more loose work like the hand studies you did as i feel this is an area you can improve in. Thanks for the tip on my Tilting images btw.

You have some pretty good character and creature designs. I can see a lot of big improvments in some of your works and in others not as much. You seem to have a big strong point with zombies and monsters. IMO. I'd like to see some more improvments on the psuedo-angel, personally. I liked his design.![]()
Besides Anatomy, another thing you might also want to study is where the light hits on your subjects when you're shading your pictures in. That might be why some of your drawing would appear to be a little flat. I'm still learning this myself. I have to remind myself at times that I can't just go buck wild with shadows and lights (I do it a lot). I have to set it up. Where is the light coming from? How will the light hit my subject? What mood will this set for my picture? I can see that you've followed it in your newer pictures a lot better than before.
Anyhow, its really hard to perfect, much like anatomy. Actually, I think its even harder than anatomy. So, might as well learn that while you're learning anatomy.
Here are a few sites that might help (hopefully!):
http://www.warpedspace.org/lightingT/part1.htm (its for 3d models, but still could be useful)
http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/light.htm (5 stars! very cool site)
Keep up the hard work and dedication!![]()
I'd noticed that despite the cool effect of my gradation, the light sources seemed to come from multiple angles in a jumbled fashion. I figure learning anatomy more precisely will help me learn how light affects each individual limb. Eshara, I am grateful for the links beyond belief![]()

Cool stuff klinesmoker! I like the ones from the 21st, very loose. Your rendering is great, but your right in that it messes with the light source. Do you know about the PeerProject? I seem to remember you posting there before. If so, There's some great stuff on lighting there! (Also, I'm whoring out the thread because it's dieing a death that I can't stop due to innactivity.) Keep it up, I'll try and drop by again!

Hi Klinesmoker
When it comes to light doing "simple" life drawing with one light source of cylinders, cubes, balls, pyramids, cones and the like while concentrating on value will help a great deal to understand light better. Need to do more of those myself![]()
Now when are you going to update?

Ps:Hope you understand my English.
Remember my advices taste best with a grain of salt.
saw ya post at myspace. thought i'd stop by and say hi...good rendering in here, btw.
Hey Kline what appen to you? This SB need some new works! I see a great potential in your stuff, but if you don't put you ass in a chair for drawing you trow away your attitude. I think that is a good way to come to entusiasm is drawing in all your free time and take inspiration from good artbook or from reference, like me in this boring period.
Keep more update mate
ciao

Looks very good, I can see you have improved in your shading.
Especially the two drawings in post #100 are fine as hell!
And dont worry Im a weed smoker too![]()
dont stop man! i was enjoying looking at your drawings. im getting on the lazy side too but gotta keep drawing.
refine your skills
It's very strange to think that I haven't been active on this forum in roughly 5 years. That said I am attending college at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh for a career in 3D game art and design. I haven't put pen or pencil to paper in 5 years either so my technique has not changed. I figured, though, that I could catalog for myself the progress I make here.

More zombie work. You may laugh but at least once a week since I can remember dreaming I've had a dream of a zombie invasion. No lie.
Thus the fascination! Dead Rising 2 coming out here soon helps a little as well!
