Thats what you get for doing good paintings.![]()
The "clown" SP should be your Avatar. Its a nice Sad clown face.
{ass-pat} good job

haha teachers stealing paintings. MMy gouache teacher brought in a painting he stole from james jean today. It gave me hope that i might one day be good, cuz james jeans painting wasnt so hot.
nice clowny selfportrait there! especially like the right eye! that really brings the piece to life. make sure the eyes have a same position.
lazy doodles

now featuring my shifty photography skills and my inability to put paintings on a level plane.![]()
first some better pictures of older paintings that I've finally stolen back.
acrylic, from life and junk
and some details
SP
and this faliure of a SP, the eyes are too small and far apart, makes me look like a damn alien.
and a new SP that was the victim of my lazyness, maybe I'll add more to it later or something. At least the likeness is a bit better.![]()

One thing I think you really should try now is representing light and shadow using 2 values (black & white), then try again with 3 values (black, darkgrey OR light grey, white), and then try again with 4 (black, dark grey, light grey, white) values. You're doing alot of gradient shades which is OK, but your foundation for the core values needs to be stronger. If you can make a pic look good using only 4 values, it'll usually look alot better if you want to go ahead and then add more values.
Snows! Man, I think you quit too soon. I am seeing several pieces that were going in a wonderful directions and then got pushed aside. Stay with 'em a little longer!
Love your sb, btw.![]()
Nice work on the lazy doodles. Are they digital. anyway, the little bit of painting which you did on the girls face has a nice solidity. and your under structure seems to hold well after you put in the details. Otherwise I think van makes a good point.

I'll side with van as well. The wonderful thing about paintings is that you can just keep working on them, no matter how long they've been sitting around! It might prove interesting to pick up on an old piece like that (although I don't know how old is old in this context), because you can look at it an a fresh sort of way.
I am particularly fond of the SP you deem a failure, I think it's a good foundation to layer and rework.

i think the traditional SPs are a decent attempt.. whos your painting teacher btw? i dont think it can possibly be worse then mine. lol i had to do the fuckin color wheel the first day. can you imagine that being my first class at sva? i though i entered a school for mentally retarded.
thanks for the comments n crits.
van - your right, i generally abandon the painting way too early. Either that or I end up completely overworking it. I've got to find a nice compromise between those. Some of the paintings are done in class though where I only have a set amount of time to finish. Going back into them is an option though, I think I might with one of them.
ben - yeps digital
wertle - I do like parts of that painting, particularly some of the skin tones and the ground I painted on. The structure under those colors though is so completely botched that I would have to completely repaint it to make it look halfway decent, and I just don't have time for that.
Lordspew - My painting teacher is Aura Rosenberg, dunno, She's not much of a teacher either. A real nice person and all and pretty open with our assignments, but when it comes to crits, she is worthless. I've never gotten one negetive word out of her about any of my paintings.
Foundation year is pretty much a waste of time, I havent learned anything pertaining to art outside of art history. If you really want to get some real art done and learn you should come out to the sunday sketchgroups with all of us NYC CA'ers or go to the tuesday Soceity of Illustrators figure drawing sessions
and now for some junk
heres an odd SP with the mirror on the floor
a skele, from life
and some longer pose fig drawing
and this one came out like ass, oh well
and now for one of my weakest points, gesture sketches

hey cameron these new batch of gesture sketches are a decent start. Now I will crit them. First off stop using such broken lines when you draw. You should use the longest lines possible to try and find the rythm of things. Usually you can draw a nice line through the neck across the torso and then down one leg. Once you can see that your figures will start to hold together a lot better.
Second you have to start watching the feet on them. I see you getting it in a few of the simpler poses where the models are straight on or in profile but youre missing it in most other cases. like in this one:
Theres no way that the back foot would be lower down than the foreground foot. Its not as obvious in the rest of them but they arent sitting right in alot of them.
Ageed with the top comment.
But I can definatly see your getting there!
my gesture drawings look like utter shit.. but it definatly helps.. the faster the gestures the faster your adjust your eyes to the model and its negative space.. and you start drawing what you see better.. In your stuff i see less thinking and more drawing.. which is awesome.. the first lines in a drawing are always the best... just like painting..
Those longer poses are really good tho.. with the obvious lightsource.. reminds me of how i work. anyways keep working. i should ressurect my old sketchbook thread and post all my sketches too.. since i actually do have a decent amount coming everyday.. just lazy to scan and post them. lol.
You're a machine, the paintings are inspiringand keep up the figure work! And get ready for a massive Thunderdome, I'll explain later

holy mackerel. Now that's posting. I can see a definite difference on that last batch of gestures. as you seem to get more relaxed and loose the drawings work. but when there is tension they seem to feel very stagnant. did you post them in chronological Order?

Very nice gesture drawings, maybe you could try adding in contour lines once you have established the values, or not, I guess it depends on what you are working on. The first long pose is really nice as well, you did a great job in the neck area.
Hello there. Congrats on those sp's. Though I'm pretty sure that's not you. I think it the young superman (what's he's name). You've got a great feeling on the shadings especially on those works you've spend more time on. I guess I'll have to bookmark this page.
the best way to get better is to come drawing on Sunday (shakes fist)
were metting up in the Park at the big fountain at 72nd street at 12:00 noon. Gonna paint the tree's changing colors. and i have an Art out Loud-type idea we can all work on.
hey man,
your sketchwork is very good! I would like to see you do a finished illustration, really thought out with drawing, value, and color. start practiceing composition. A good book to look at is Andrew Loomis's creative illustration book. It has a lot of ideas about composition that you can study. Also old Ill. Masters like N.C. Wyeth, and Dean Cornwell have a lot to offer. Great work man. Keep them coming.![]()

Julien ALDAY
and some stuff
first up a watercolor, I only like the pillar thingie and the water, The huge blob of colors above it is supposed to be the fall trees in central park. I just kinda gave up on the trees, oh well.
and now 2 portraits from life that I did today.
![]()
Your portraits are AWESOME, snowsfall
* Help a CA artist! Visit the Constructive Critique section! *
them trees look like a bombed out city. but i love the water.
portraits look good too, especially the second one
Snow: Love the way you fill the page of the sketchbook on post 82 there are some nice exercises in there. and the larger portraiture piece that sits alone on one of the pages has very good pencil work.
The watercolor of central park works until you get to the trees. the color on the trees could use some definition. Have you tried to mix in color pencils into some thing like that? The colorpencils act just like water colors when you hit them with water and may be able to get a nice blend. Also try to use some crayons to do an understudy of the trees. Keep the crayon simple and suggestive cause if you hit them with water they just resist it and give a nice clean break in the paint.
The portraits I love. the charcoal is not overpowering and the range in tone is nicely done.
