this sketchbook is so emo. Look at that first self portrait. My crit is to use better lines. your life drawings all look very fuzzy. You can get away with a lot of ambiguity with shading. Try doing some without shading. And all your faces look pretty alike. Do some with different features and head shapes.

    otherwise good work.

You have some great studies from life, both the still life and the portrait work. I can see a huge amount of progress in your faces from the start of this thread to your most recent posts. Sweet stuff.

Huuuuge sketchbook. Very nice. I was going to make a few anatomy comments, but after looking through the pics again it seems like you're already working on the issues that you need to work on the most. So for now, I'm going to just shut up and let you handle your business

You've got some great stuff displayed here. I'd say you have a problem with consistent quality though- there's some really beautiful sketches here and then there's some quick doodles that kinda fall flat in comparison.

The upper left drawing is bloody amazing. I love the incorporation of design into it with the black background and white figure. I guess my biggest recommendation is to play with the framing of a figure more.

I'm really starting to hate not having a scanner here, I think I'm gonna bring mine back down from home around thanksgiving. Until then these crappy photos will have to suffice.

The charcoal one looks very nice. My one comment is that there is such a nice lighting thing going on maybe the side of the hair getting hit with light should have more highlights. Get in there with more charcoal and the kneaded eraser and bring more shape and definition to it. I don't think it would hurt the composition any as long as you keep the tone flowing in the proper direction.

I agree that the composition and use of lighting is very nice on this last one. I think you could push the shadowed side of the man's face even further. Right now there's a really great highlight along his cheek and shoulder, but I think pushing the shadows on the opposite side of his face and neck will make them stand out even more.

The positioning and hair flow of the angel lady is really nice. How big is that piece?

Geeez...it looks like you are improving from high school already. I have a feeling it has very little to do with your Foundation year professors, and more that you draw and work like a maniac..and more importantly you love to do it. I'm gonna keep my eye on you bro...I can't wait to see how you progress when things start rolling at SVA. Great likeness on Jess too....keep her outta trouble!
-going on the 23rd? hope to see ya there

I really like the concept in the dark/light angel drawing. Especially the glance the darker angel is giving off. The lighter angel feels muddy in the values, or she needs less detail to reduce the middle grays plauging it right now. It's hard to say. I feel that she needs to read brighter so that a good contrast between the two is achieved.
Really nice lighting on the guy's face though.

    Great sketchbook

I really like your style. YOu've got some great things going here. You're work from life is VERY good, you obviously have a good eye. My only little crit would be some of the stuff you draw from your head, the proportions of the head or slightly strange. Looking through your whole sketchbook you've definitely improved. Some of the heads seem a bit too shallow, like too thin in the profile view and the eyes are often too high up on the face. Otherwise your work is very solid.

Looking at those landscapes, you don't happen to be in Savannah? It looks familiar.

Some really great stuff here!!!! Not sure how I've skipped over it???? I love the ref'd drawings, they are a lot more realistic, though I love the un ref'd pics as well. Some nice shading and I like the fact that you experiment with all types of material/mediums. Keep it up!!

P.S. I would like to see more oil painting

first up some lame hw assignments that look even worse combined with my photography skills

And now for some acrylic paintings done in class

figure paintings with two different palletes limited to 3 colors plus white each. One on the left was around an hourish or so pose, the one on the right was a bit longer. Two different models cause the first one got sick or something. Oh and the picture was quickly snapped with my camera phone after i finished so

    And a greyscale still-life

    BenGonzalez - all good ideas

Wertle - it's not too big, maybe 20 inches by 12?

    Dano - thanks

Scott - I think it's gonna be more like Jess getting me into to trouble, oh well, I'm attempting to force her to draw more . It was cool meeting and drawing with ya. I might be comming out on the 23rd... depends on when my friends who are comming into the city plan on leaving and how hungover I am

Rob- haha in my dreams, it was cool meeting and drawing with you. Next time you gotta stay late into the night with us to catch the collab sketchbook fun.

Redfive- thanks, I'm glad the whole lighter/darker ying yang whatever thing I tried to achieve was noticed I agree that I didn't push the lights versus the darks enough though.

Jess - Go draw you sick disease filled girl, maybe it will make you better before this thursday.

Spacemanchris - thanks, especially for pointing out the problems with my heads, I get stuck in the habit of making heads a certain way and don't even notice some of the anatomy problems
No I don't live in savannah, I think the environments you are refering to are from central park here in Manhattan. I hear Savannahs beautiful though.

    Interceptor- Thanks bro

Cobi - I would love to see some oil paintings from me too but alas, My paints are back home and even if they were here, I live in a tiny little room with pretty much zero ventilation. I guess I could open my window and set up a fan, but its damn windy and cold being up on the ninth floor

yeah a bit cramped. it reminds me of my dorm room. Just about as much space with two people living in it.

Love the work on the paintings but they don't look finished. The pencil HW is not bad. I would like to see the lines and hatching a little darker but I'm thinking that the camera is taking a lot away.

    Nice job

I am really really REALLY impressed by the drawing of the drawing in the sketchbook. It really shows that you drew what you observed, rather than the symbol of another drawing on a paper, if that makes any sense.

The faces on those figure paintings have really nice structure. The grayscale one seems a bit taken over by the middle gray, though, maybe push the contrast and take advantage of the whitest white a little more.
