    Course is done! YAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY

So now that the course is done i get to try and find some stuff i have not posted before (should not be hard since i have not been here for so long).

I decided to change the sb name to have a closer relationship to the blog as well as the site. What? I did not tell you i have a site? Shame on me!

    http://www.pjmagalhaes.com

So forgive the multiple posts to follow i will post about 2 or 3 pics per post, i hope that is ok.

These are the applications for a coffee logo that i posted a while back and the other one was for an assignment to make pictograms for an emergency that we had to come up with. I decided to pick that awkward moment that is a nerd's all consuming fear - when your new g/f decides to take an interest in your collectibles. What can i say, i had to entertain myself somehow.

    My latex Mask

We actually got to play around with latex and make a mask, one of my favourite pieces we had to do in the whole course. Sorry about the man pics just trying for a little progression snapshot. The final colour was done with airbrush.

The top 2 were meant to be a sketch and a final illustration for a portrait of a profession a la Archimboldo. I really really liked the sketch and how it came out but i just completely overworked the final illustration with the coloured pencils. I really needed to be a lot less heavy and have a much finer toothed paper.

The other was a surreal exercise in class on a variation of Chinese Whispers. Someone would write non stop for 2 minutes without using punctuation and the end the next person would continue but with only the last 3 words of the previous person, and so on and so forth. It was really cool!

Nice stuff man! I think what you should do is practice more life studies...they'll take you farther in a shorter period of time if you keep at it.

Ok a couple of firsts here. First time that i have actually made an animated giff. I could not really figure out how to make the colours work properly so i made a little small and included a larger jpg so you guys can see my lady.

And my first matte painting. it was fun to figure new stuff out on photoshop but nyaaah nothing else about it is any good really.

These 2 were for a children's book exercise. It was fun especially the storyboards and seeing the pages come to life. A few things that i am not happy with on both of these but all in all a great learning experience.

Just a colour study to get my day started on the right foot. Came across Dave Rapoza's sb and blog and really just using that as motivation to get a schedule going that i can both stick to and that will be the right type of exercises that will produce some growth as well.

jackpot_anjr90 - thanks so much for dropping by man, i'll return the favour for sure. And yeah i think you are right, come back sometime and see how my studies are coming along.

Hey man. It's been a while. How's life in the land of criminals? Those skeleton studies on the dec 18th post are a really huge step forward for you. Nice rendering. You really should join the crimson daggers study group. It has improved my motivation a huge deal. Hope to see you there.

It's fun to see all the stuff that you've been working on during the course

Like everyone else I love the alien stuff, and it's cool to see you venture into sculpting. Will be fun to follow your progress on that.

I feel like we are struggling with the same kind of stuff when it comes to digital painting - getting enough contrast, picking the right colours, achieving the right edges. I suppose it's something that will come along if you just do enough digital work, but those are my biggest frustrations right now and what sometimes holds me back. I thought I saw some of the same issues in some of your digital paints, so figured I'd just let you know I'm right in there with ya, heh.

Did not really have time to polish this up ( and i still don't know whether i made the deadline or not) but i had a lot of fun doing this.

Despite it not being done if you want to tear it up with some C&C it is always appreciated.

Nice stuff going on here mate. Keep working on the overall structure of your figures. You tend to get a bit sloppy with the forms sometimes. I'll be back for more soon.

    ZBrush skull done

Twan and FantasyArtist - cheers guys i appreciate it.

My first foray into ZBrush. I was getting a little too obsessed with the details and was not getting it right so i am just leaving it there and moving on to other stuff.

    A portrait WIP

I really am thinking that this particular portrait is going to teach me a lot, so if anyone reading this thinks it will be worth their time i would really appreciate some input. This was the head for my surveyor chow that i never finished but i liked the head i came up with so i am going to run with it as a portrait.

She has almost eagle like eyes with feathers for ears that work kind like an owl's funneling sound into a mechanical bit at the end. I am starting with normal human skin but with the intention of doing some colour change or correction at the end, since i cannot decide what alien like colour i want to use at this point.
