hello everyone, well i found these forums a couple of days ago and i've been amazed at how much and how fast these people with the daily sketchbooks improve, so i thought i'd start my own and get more help with my drawings, so anyway im 16 years old and i've been drawing seriously-ish for the past 2 months or so, anyway heres some pages from the past couple of days or so.




i was wondering if anyone had any tips on scanning pages whoch are too big to fit in a scanner i tried to piece them together but i dont know how??

Most folks have a scanner that is large enough to accomodate an 8.5 x 11" or metric A4 size sheet of paper. Piecing things together with photoshop isn't really worth the (in my humble opinion) time it takes to do, unless the piece is something that you are going to build up to a finished piece, or need to archive for whatever reason. If it's possible, get a book that is slightly smaller than yr scanner bed, so that all you have to do is plop that b**** down and hit the scan button. presto! Gratis! Other than that, carefully taken digital photos can at least record what an image's overall gist is; though the distortion can be problematic.

You might check YR school to see if they have a larger scanner in the library.

a tip is to do potraits, its fun and it helps, but do it at the same time your watching on and of, of a picture with a skull on it.

hey and i'll watch you comixnut, yes i'd love to talk loomis, i don't own any of his books but theres a site here which has four of his books on and i've been studying the figure drawing one so far, how about you?

you are hard to get a grip of, post more s we can see what to improve... it seems that you should just keep on drawing and studying life, analyzing shapes and shadows, how they make shapes turn in or out

as hard as I try, theres nothing more useful for me to say to you than keep on doing what youre doing now, youre doing everything right!!!

you seem to be making very fast progress, though, and sometime youre lines should become more controlled and neat!!

the anatomy is wrong further back (the wide one), but gets better on the last post, same with the facial proportions being wrong, but improving again!!!

Like several have commented before me, you show good progress here! Nice to see your doing anatomystudies, cuz' they really help!
Try to take a look at how muscles bulge and stretch when they move as well. Like with the guy with the flashlight hand, his abs look like his standing more or less straight up and down, the stretced side of him would have longer, more stretched out abs, and the other side more bunched up.

everything everybody has said is pretty much spot on i think. You are really evolving as an artist. Your studies are really good but make sure you apply them to your own drawings quite regularly. It took me a while to learn that. *S*

Did you have a look at Fun with a pencil yet? i thought that one was great and an excellent place to start before heading into Figure Drawing for all it's worth, at least for me! *L*

yeh i had a quick run through it and your right it does seem like a good place to start, it has some very basic yet really instructional information, what do you know about burne hogarths books? i'm thinking i might look into buying one or is it a bad idea to be studying hogarth and loomis at the same time?,

It's great to see more anatomy, and the pup looks downright cheerful. Be sure with the anatomy studies to take them slowly and work for accuracy. The extra time spent will force yer brain to assimilate the knowledge. Well. at least I think it did for me.

Nice study of lips Kondor. And your faces are coming along nicely. On your hands the only thing i can say is you can always hold off drawing the actual hands until you got the basic shapes in the places you want. So draw the cilinders and spheres and all of that, and then when they look like a hand it should be easier to draw in the muscles.*S*

How about that doohinkus? *S* I say we do number 13 on page 64. And i also think we should have a little leeway(sp?). So as long as it kinda looks like it, it will be fine. *S* You pick the one after that.

The best advice I ever gave myself regarding hands was this: go slow. Take your time with the hands, and don't get distracted by all the extra wrinkles and lines. To start with, focus on the main folds at the joints and some extra bulk and lines up above to designate the knuckles. Simplify the hands, take it slow, and worry more about form than value (i.e. rendering).

Looking good though! Keep it up, and if they're a problem, just keep drawing hands till you're even better at hands than just about anything else. It'll happen and it probably won't take too long.

thanks a bunch for the advice craig, i think im going to do as you said and do really basic forms for the hands for now and then after my heads and figures are a bit better i can start studying them properly

good pick comixnut, so are we just drawing anything we can get out of that pose then yes? i will have a go at that in the morning , Just to let anyone else know, if they want to join in on the doohinkus thingy were doing then go to here. then let us know you're having a go at it so we can see your interpretations

this sketch is terrible lol, its made me realise why i can't just jump into doing concepts straight away and that i reallt do need to get my basic forms down, i can't wait til i can recreate things that i have in my head

hey man,.. loooadss of improvement goin down already. ure observation to paper skills are much better and ure faces are coming along really nice (there probably better then mine, thts where i need to improve). keep up all this studying and hard work and ull be able to recreate any fantastic idea in no time.

Your like me.. ure 16 so u and me both and many younger members have got plenty of time to improve greatly.
