painter sketch

First off, I dont really like this. I am trying to learn painter, and id like to paint with that "painterly look" that Sparth (yes I know he uses photoshop! ) and Davi have. Kind of bold colors, with minimal blending. Anyways I tried taht here and failed, so I blended it a bit.

This is my first "real" painter sketch.




If anyone has any comments on brushes I could use to get the effect Id like, please help me!

Oh and if anyone can let me in on the secret to blending colors in painter Id really appreciate it!

What I mean by that is, say Im painting a red object next to a green object, I have trouble finding the right color for the reflections. In traditional media you can jsut mix colors by mixing the paint up but I dont see how to do that in painter, other than just going by eye in the large color swatch..

If I think I understand what you're asking, to create a palette, you can create a range of colors in the Color Set either from the whole image or a selected layer, then choose amoung that range.

Otherwise, what I might do in your case is just use the Liquid: Just Add Water Brush, and blend the hues together, then select a color from the result with the Airbrush Brush, and go to town.

Thats a good idea about my color problem.. Its ahrd to jsut guess from the color swatch, its alot better to mix the colors and get the color that is just right..

Now if I could only find a decent brush.. mayeb ill have to go back to photoshop..

i find that oil pastels or square chalk is better than those crappy painter 7 brushes. Of course, you can always load the older brushes.

Did you try the color picker already? That way you're sure to get the right color. Shortkey is CTRL.

But our probably knew this.

WEll I couldnt find a way to blend colors well, to be able to pick a color I wanted with the color picker.. BUt that just add wateer thign wroks pretty well.. Now I jsut need a decent brush. I tried oil pastel and chalk, but it didnt really turn out the way i wanted.. I think I might jsut stick to photoshop unless I can get a brush I really like in painter.

In photoshop I shade with a contrasting color using around a 10 - 30% transparency, what ever feels right. Sometimes (if I'm shading on a separate layer) I use blending modes to get the right saturation. In painter I haven't developed a blending strategy because I am so fascinated with the watercolor brush that haven't branched out much :-)

Funny how tastes go. I hate the PShop brushes compared to those of Painter. Check out In Depth site. They sometimes post brushes there that are very useful.

Im so used to using photoshop, im having a really hard time getting into painter. And in painter it tries to emulate traditional media, but its still not the same, so il want to add some broken paint to an image, when with real oils id use a knife and lightly break paint to get the effect, I cant do that in painter.. plus i dont have all my layer modes like I do in photoshop..

Feeb sent me a really great brush, I used it to color my arm study sketch and it turned out really good, so ill hjaev to use that brush a bit more, but it looks really promising
