Red face Feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh's Sketchbook - The Last of the Secret Agents...

Click HERE to dive into the newer stuff that doesnt suck as bad.. Thanks for visiting!

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone, I've been lurking here as well as over on CGTalk.com. Mostly just enjoying the art and giving praise. I really enjoy everyone's Daily Sketchbooks though and wanted to join in on the fun. I've done illustration work and comics in the past but I was real limited in certain areas as well as being slow and my people were stiffer than I wanted them to be. So I've sort of gone back to the basics to try and build up my skills better with more gesture and life drawing as well as learning the planes of the head and rest of the body. It's strange, a lot of the stuff is like starting from scratch and it looks really horrid, heheh. But nevertheless I'll still post some of the bad stuff just to document a progression as I continue to post. I think I can keep up mostly daily. I try to at least sketch some daily but may not always have time to scan them and post them so I may disappear for a couple days then play catch-up.

So enough rambling, here it is, the first surge of art for you all to see. Enjoy, and feel free to chime in with your comments anytime. I'm here to learn!

    Welcome aboard!

I like the expression and pose in the tattoo chick sketch. Watch the light source in the colored version- build form with light and shadow but keep it consistent. Don't get too soft and airbrushy.

I see you struggling with facial structure. Some careful construction and geometric studies will help there.
    Keep it up!

    Thanks Artkitty,

Yeah, facial structure is my biggest weakness right now, that's why Im going back and working on planes of the fave alot to help me get a better understanding of the face in 3 dimensions. Ill probly get some of those sketches scanned tonight or tomorrow. This is just catch-up stuff form the last couple weeks. Definitely have a ways to go with that though. Been looking at my Loomis books though to help out as well as breaking down the faces in photo reference.

    The Bone Doctor Diagnosis :::

Nothing better than a daily dose ~~~ yes your understanding of structure of head is lacking ~~~ you must own your own skull ~~~ you must understand the underlying bone structure.

Look at Bridgman, and learn to block in the head. This is harder than it looks ~~ most people including me have to do this dozens of times until the light goes on. This is really basic stuff and most people fight it or just don't do it period and their work suffers for it the rest of their lives.
Just do it, you can thank me later!

Check this thread: Gaby has got it going on ~~~ go through the whole thread and see how much time she has spent learning the planes of the head! (and everything else)

    More heads and tiny chicks!

Sikkness - Thanks for the welcome and the comments!

PHATandy and Yoell - Thanks for your comments, and Im glad you like the third figure. Didn't really have any plans for it but maybe one of these days sketching I'll do up one with a bit more detail, flesh it out a bit!

PHATandy - yeah Ive got that comic style, been trying to get work in the comics industry for years. DOne a bit of inking here and there and some work for indy press guys but nothing major yet, nothing from the big 2 (or 3) yet. I'm more focusing on other areas nowadays but would still ove a shot at doing a DC or Marvel series someday. But I want to try to get away from the style a bit as well if possible, that's partly why Ive sorta gone back to basics so I can better see the body in real 3 dimensions and be able to translate it in a more realistic way on paper. Ive got a long ways to go though.......... ANd those comic style habits are hard to break.....

I love the comic style as well and want to do more, but one of my biggest weaknesses besides heads at certain angles obviously, is that my people were always stiffer than I would like so I'll have alot of gesture drawing in my upcoming sketches as well as working on the planes of the head and body.

Here's some more heads. Getting a bit better at the straight on shots with the heat turned side to side. Need to start focusing on getting the planes in proportion and correct on moving the head up and down and odd angles that can add alot of expression to a drawing but are hard angles to draw. Ive seen alot of pieces that tend to be really weak in alot of areas but they might be really good with expressive hands or expressions or interesting up or down shots of the head with expression and it can really make it stand out from the rest.

Got some gesture drawing style tiny women too, on to the art.........

Dancing Heads of beauty (and awkwardness)

More heads, trying to get some character in the faces. Did some failed (and too ugly to post) attempts at upshots as well as lots of linework with pens, just working on throwing lines accurately and such, nothing really worth posting from that. So just this long page for today.

Next couple days Im going to keep focusing on some gesture drawing to stay loose and mostly more heads while I work on better angles and expressions.

    Enjoy!

Nosin' my way through my Bridgeman Books

GOt stuck on noses tonight. Definitely one of my weak spots especially at different angles on a face. Drawing whole faces always screws me up so I am going to learn the dimensions of each individual piece and then I'll put them all together and try a full face again at some good angles.

    Thumbs up

youve got some nice studies, but all your faces look similar...id suggest trying to find different refferences, maybe putting more realism into them

    good job though
I posted a comment, it would be nice if you returned the favor...

SicFrost - agreed, definitely need to use more reference. Ive more been not using photos so much as Im just looking in my bridgman and loomis books trying to learn the dimensions of the planes of the head better in its more basic forms so that when I do use photo reference I can more easily see those shapes in a real persons face. But I took your advice and pulled out a magazine and drew a couple heads out of it.

I didn't have a ton of time tonight so this was, unfortunately, all I had time for today but I thought they turned out alright. Finally making some progress IMO.

Hopefully more to come tomorrow, might not have much time at home the next couple days (halloween festivities, YAY! ) SO may not see another update until the weekend.

Thanks so much for the comments guys and gals, much appreciated, keep em coming!

Hey hello, I am fighting stiffness my self
I am doing exaclty the same as you, doing gesture
drawing, loseen up, I have seen that if you get to analitical
you might get stiffness, that does not means that
you dont think of anatomy, insted just dont think to hard
on it while you draw a non studing doodle, that frees
my mind, maybe will help you too, and going to basic is good too.
your stuff looks very good and I can see from
the 1ist post that you are progressig fast, keep updating,
and if you find a good metod share the info.

    see ya.

    In Goth Daze.......

Welp, I did all my halloween partying earlier in the weekend and Im DONE!!! SO for the actual holiday, I am home resting.......and sketching. So here's what Im working on this weekend. Picked up a magazine with a bunch of articles about the old goth bands I love and it was loaded with great pics so I felt inspired to do some goth portraits for this all-so-appropriate holiday. Enjoy!

HI everyone, well, I've been keeping up on my sketching almost every day, save for a couple. However, I'm really lazy about scanning. I hate scanning stuff, it's a tedious thing, so I tend to procrastinate on that. But I broke down and got a bunch of the pages scanned this evening so here is a big load of stuff for you to peruse,

    Got enough heads yet?

Some studies of the basic planes of the arms so I can learn to place shadows and spot blacks better when doing a finished piece.

More heads.........trying to make my women look prettier too along with getting their shapes better but staying feminine. I tend to make them more manly when blocking the out with shapes and such.

Splitting these up so you dont have to load a page with 20 images hopefully...........here's the last batch.........

Working on the shape of the eye some. SOrta figuring out that the line of the upper lid of the eye is better thought of as the fold for the round rige the the lid folds back into rather than an actual lid shaping around the roundness of the eyeball......(does that make any sense? it's late, heheh)

Starting to work on expressions finally.........

    A couple photo references...........

    Enjoy all......

awesome work here man.. your faces are excellent got loads of character to them. Only porblem i notice is that on a few of them youve got some features of place but generally there all really sound. Especially the ones that look like they came straight out of an 80's hair dressers. .
Would like to see more of ure other stuf ( not just faces ) cus some of ure earlier stuff was really cool.
keep up the good work man.

PHATandy - heheh yeah thanks, thsoe 80's hairstyles are form a magazine I picked up recently about the old GOth scenes when Robert SMith and the Cure were in their heyday and Daniel Ash and NIck Cave, so I couldn't resist a sketch of em. AS for facial features out of place, yeah, thats what Ive been trying to work out as well with working on the planes of the face. If you get the planes right, it helps you line up everything else. I'm gonna start mixing it up a bit as well to keep things interesting, instead of just heads every night, heheh. Starting today actually, have some creature sketches, just working on shapes right now.

jungsangchoe - Love the girlies....... Thanks man!

Just a bunch of Feng Zhu style silhouettes. Trying to work out a look for a reeeeally big and tall creature that would be like a docile transport beast for colonies on another planet. Some enormous beast that carries a barge or something that can hold hundreds of people in it. Drew ideas for the carrier of the people on a few of them too. I'm liking the sorta kangaroo ones but not sure if that's feasible since there's no way you could keep the carrier still and not throw everyone around inside when the creature walked.

I sorta like the buffalo looking idea as well especially more rounded out like a dinosaur like I did at the bottom. DId one upright on 2 legs too, not a good idea for this but would make a cool character of some sort. Anyway, not quite there, will get back to this tomorrow or sometime soon. Just ideas for a story I have brewing, possibly for the 2D Space Opera Challenge too.

Some more silhouettes as well as some gesture drawing to try and get looser and more feminine female figures. AS well as working on anatomy for male figures in different poses.......enjoy............(once again being lazy about scanning, so this is stuff selected from the last couple evenings)

This is more for the idea in my last post but decided instead of having a transport that riodes on the creature, Instead it would be some sort of hovering luxury barge that gets pulled by an enormously tall creature, sorta thinkingthis works better. Just couldnt get a design i liked on the former idea where it would be believable that it wouldnt shake the hell out of everyone onboard while the creature walked.

Looking good all around. Do you have a particular reference for those anatomy studies, or are they out of your head?

SeraphSword - Thanks! As for reference, I use both. I usually will start with either photo reference like a photo of a face or model or clippings from muscle magazines and such. I also look at Andrew Loomis books alot. The two I have open consistently are "Figure Drawing, for all it's worth" and "Drawing The Head and Hands". So I usually will do a couple sketches lookinjg at any of those items and then I'll set it aside and try to redraw the same thing without looking at the reference so directly or try to draw the same musculature or features but at a different angle seeing if I can work it out without reference. Just trying not to be a slave to the reference so that I can achieve similar quality without having to have exact reference for everything I do, which is especially helpful when working on deadlines.

That's partly why Ive sorta gona back to basics as of late as well working on the planes and structure more. Before it was too much guesswork and struggle or being a slave to the reference pieces, unabe to even come close to as nice of a piece without a shot of the exact head or angle. This took too much time and research to find these and caused problems when tryint to meet deadlines when doing comics work or anyting else.

Anyway, loaded answer to your question there, heheh. Thanks for looking!
