Higher Iq , Better Artistic Potential???

    What is everyone's IQ ,
I am trying to see if having a higher IQ,
you have a better potentio than other artists

I dont know any great artists, who is dumb or average,
most of the really good artists are usually highly intellengent.

    My IQ is - 135
my motivation to learn is = crap

well last time i took one of those tests i came up like 144 or somethin, but yea having a high IQ means jackshit in real life. it measures logical & critical thinking skills(which are useful) but so many people learn in different ways so an IQ test can't really measure how creative someone is. heck, there is this mentally slow guy that my professor told me is an awesome artist, not scribbles or anything, but like pro quality stuff, so yea, don't think a high IQ has anything to do w/ how well you draw

Actually, there has been some mentally handicapped people who can draw well. Some people think its because they're disabled in their logical thinking, it makes their creative skills stronger. They're not fooled by visual illusions, which I only assume, can give them a better use of an artist's "true sight". Thats probably why I even got into drawing, because when I was in 1st and 2nd grade, I had a lot of reading/writing problems, and thats when I started drawing. Go figure.

132 on the visual test. (with the figures and puzzles.)
    129 on the auditive test.
    98 on the math/logic test. (111 on ritaline. )

Done by a certified shrink, not those web based ones.

But hey, what`s IQ anyways? a number? IQ doesn`t apply anywhere in real life. It doesn`t even get you pussy. It`s only a standard that measures how good you do on a given test, and the boundaries of your IQ is set by those tests. The mind stretches in so many directions, and work on so many levels that simple tests won`t really show ones potential in anything. (well, exept IQ-puzzle-solving skills. yeah.)

//edit: as for the thread start: I don`t really think that iq have much to do with drawing skills. But i do think that people with higher iq have a tendency to explore things abit more. Read more books, get inspiration from poetry, have a desire to learn new things, read art history and so on. All those things combined, and add a few more, and i think people with high IQ are better drawers. (Those with a little talent for drawing in the first place that is..)

//edit2: someone needs to make a better word for "drawer". Cuz thats where i keep my clothes.

Some people (like me) are required to take those test by those in charge of our mental health. Why they do it, i don`t really know, i guess it`s a way to put everyone into a system for comparison.

They tested us in grade school. I snuck a peek at my school transcripts years later and I think it was 135 or something like that. I was in advanced classes from 6th grade up, was in Honor Society, have a mess of university degrees, graduated cum laude, etc.

Although I would like to think that artists are intelligent, I don't really see what the correlation would be between art and a high IQ.

And really, I don't think scoring well on IQ tests really merits much attention. It doesn't measure common sense or breadth of knowledge or skills... or much that is important to doing well in life or being an interesting person.

I have a very high IQ (not meaning to be braggin) but I have a very hard time getting motivated. I think my technical skills are above average (no where near professional skill, but better than msot people who dont draw everyday) I jsut have a very hard time being motivated to draw... It really sucks, because I have this burning desire to create..

The last time ive read something about IQ, some professors said that even people with a low IQ (what ever that means) are able to bring up the skills they need to the same level like intelligent ppls, but they need a bit more time than "high" IQers to learn new skills. Well whatever...
I dont care about that stuff anyway... hard-work, self-motivation and self-critique can bring an artist to a high level...

back when I was doing A-levels in London, my physics teacher told us [the class] something that really stuck to my mind: IQ tests dont really prove anything for one excellent reason: students have been known to be trained to answer whole IQ tests and pass well above average! just teach them about the patterns and memorize a few things!

there might not neccesarily be a correlation between and artists intelligence and how good they are. (IQ completely aside we established it doesnt do anything, but general smartness ) There might however be a correlation between intelligence and how much exposure they get. There are probably thousands of rediculously talented artists, that have never left there basement, and therefor you have never heard of them. However all the really good ones you have heard of have useually made it quite a distance career wise, that lets say a mentally disabeled person may not. So its all about exposure in the end

Disclaimer: I might be completely fucking wrong.

I´ve made an IQ-test by Mensa - an organization supporting highly abled persons here in Germany - and came out quite well. Only thing I think it´s good about is boosting you ego - it doesn´t say anythink about the ability to cope with real life and of course art ... I just have to look where I got in the past 38 years of my life and what dumbasses are making the money

    lmao!

As the others have said, IQ certainly doesn't hurt; But motivation, discipline and curiousity are equally important to the development of an artist.

The last time I took a proper I.Q test, it was 162, and if you look at my stuff it's a bag of shit, so throw the I.Q.-creativity thing out the window.

Although you did say creative potential, so if I was aimed more towards art instead of engineering/design maybe I'd be better at it.

The thing about IQ tests that bugs me is that they are geared for the upper classes. They are rife with cultural phrases and word problems that don't mean anything unless you come from that particular culture or income level.

There are other intelligence tests that more accurately give you an idea of your intellegence. For example, the Seven Intelligences works well:

    http://www.mitest.com/o7inte~1.htm

    My score there:

    The Seven Intelligence Areas

    Linguistic: 8

    Logical-Mathematical: 6

    Spatial: 11

    Bodily-Kinesthetic: 7

    Musical: 3

    Interpersonal: 4

    Intrapersonal: 10

A Short Definition of your Highest Score

Spatial - the ability to perceive and represent the visual-spatial world accurately, to arrange color, line, shape, form and space to meet the needs of others, to interpret and graphically represent visual or spatial ideas, to transform visual or spatial ideas into imaginative and expressive creations. Possible vocations that use spatial intelligence include illustrator, artist, guide, photographer, interior decorator, painter, clothing designer, weaver, builder, architect, art critic, inventor, or cinematographer.

    Anyway, give it a shot.

    Cheers,
    ~Oreg.

Musical - the ability to understand and develop musical technique, to respond emotionally to music and to work together to use music to meet the needs of others, to interpret musical forms and ideas, and to create imaginative and expressive performances and compositions. Possible vocations that use the musical intelligence include technician, music teacher, instrument maker, choral, band, and orchestral performer or conductor, music critic, aficionado, music collector, composer, conductor, and individual or small group performer.

Intrapersonal - the ability to assess one's own strengths, weaknesses, talents, and interests and use them to set goals, to understand oneself to be of service to others, to form and develop concepts and theories based on an examination of oneself, and to reflect on one's inner moods, intuitions, and temperament and to use them to create or express a personal view. Possible vocations that use the intrapersonal intelligence include planner, small business owner, psychologist, artist, religious leader, and writer.

I like that test a lot...tells me exactly what I figure a test like that should say about me, and well...according to the high intrapersonal score, I should know all that stuff beforehand...and I do! go figure.
Plus it says I could be an artist, writer, philosopher or psychologist...covering most all of my main interests. Coolies.
