At least I haven't neglected this sketchbook as much I did the Exclusive one! Cruise by there, btw, there's a couple new images that aren't in this one.
First is the wrap-around cover for the sketchbook I'll have at Comic Con. Booth #5555! Be there.
Then there are some miscellaneous sketches... yep.
Cheers!

Your sb is really inspiring, i like your ball point pen portraits theyre really awesome... Its really cool to find something like your sb that makes you wanna draw more and more... Keep it up![]()
So, obviously I haven't posted here in quite some time. I've been slammed with work and life and craziness and keeping with more than one or two sites has been challenging at best. But I'm going to start changing that! I'll post here more regularly again. After all, this was that site that got it all started for me.
Chances are you've seen some or all of these pieces elsewhere, but many of you probably haven't so let's do this!

Hey Phuzion, your sketchbook is superb! I really enjoyed your Batman & Joker sketches & the dragon painting. Will you be painting any of the Batman images because they'd look sweet.
You have a very inspiring collection here and I look forward to seeing some more.

Always think about:
lighting! design! perspective! proportion!
And (self)motivation is still everything.
NickyBeats: Thank you!
rumpenstiltzkin: Why, thanks!
Riox: Thanks! I won't be painting up the Batman sketches. They were actually just done as pose reference for part of the DC Universe Online website. I think they were using the characters as bookends, rendering 3D versions based on my sketches.
Carnifex: Thanks, man!
Here's a current WIP... I'll post more progress as it happens.

both your traditional and digital work is amazing! ill have to look through the rest of this sb!
Kevin: Thanks! I haven't been posting in a while, so most of the work is all old stuff, but hopefully you'll dig it anyway.
These days I mostly work as a sketch artist doing mostly Front of Box (FoB) design, keyart design and storyboarding for TV spots. It's all videogame oriented advertising. I saw they released the cover art for Sniper 2... And someone thought is was a good idea to just trash our concepts and go with the very very typical FPS FoB design. An iconic soldier striding toward the viewer. I had done a lot of sketches for Sniper 2, so I thought I'd post them so folks could see some of what goes on behind the scenes and what sorts of ideas get canned. Some don't work, some do, but of course it's up to the suits to make the call. Generally they're not artists. C'est la vie.
Cheers!

your work is amazing SIR! this is truly inspirational! i notice that you still do a lot of work traditionally. digital always has,and still feels awkward for me. do you happen to have any insight on the balance between traditionald and digital in concepts?

Thanks, Wutangclam!
The balance really comes down to what your focus/interests are. If you want to work in the entertainment industry it's generally fine if you want to draw traditionally, but colors are best done digitally mostly because the clients are going to want changes along the way. We don't really get to do rough thumbnails, drawings, color comps and then final color anymore. Clients will make changes at any point in the process, so you'd best have layers that allow you to easily change something. But since I work 90% as a sketch artist I get to work mostly pencil on paper. Some sketch artists have moved over to digital sketching, but I refuse. I need the tactile response of my 2B pencils on my buttery laserjet paper
Digital feels awkward for me when it comes to drawing, but feels just fine when painting. It mostly has to do with mileage, like anything in art. I've covered thousands and thousands of pages with pencil scratches... I haven't covered nearly as many .psd pages with Drawing Brush pixels, so I'm just not as comfortable. And I don't see the need to change that. But I would recommend at least getting very comfortable with painting on the computer, though I'd also recommend painting traditionally as much as you can, too. I think that balance is important for those that do this for the art.
Cheers,
-Daniel Landerman

I started working on this self portrait yesterday. I found myself over the past couple of years trying to adhere to a certain school of thought in painting, but after some introspection and self-analysis I realized that school of thought did not reflect my natural inclinations. I love realism and Naturalism but I approach it all with a bit more Impressionistic sense of color. It's where I'm most comfortable and what allows me to just let go and have a blast painting. So this is the work in progress. I'll be working on my scarf and jacket today. Let's hope I don't botch the job
11"x14" oil on panel

Fantastic sketchbook Daniel. I am totally in love with your pencil sketches. Thanks for sharing them with us!!
I love your characters and linework. Those are some very interesting compositions up above too.
you manage to get such nice watercolour qualities into those oils, whats your palette and mediums?
Thanks, Mane!
My palette consists of ivory black, permanent alizarin crimson, cadmium red, indian yellow, yellow ochre pale, cadmium yellow, titanium white, manganese blue, french ultramarine, cobalt blue, payne's grey, olive green, burnt umber, burnt sienna and italian terra rosa. Sometimes I'll use Galkyd as a medium, but most of the time I just use a little bit of Gamsol, which is probably where some of that watercolor feel is coming from.
