Well, this is great - though I must admit that it's not what I would define as a sketchbook piece but as, mhhh, a finished painting. Don't know what the others think, but I had really expected... sketches.

I've always thought that a sketch book has whatever one wishes it to contain. My sketchbooks have anything from quick sketches, thumbnails, small doodles ,or even writing all the way up to life drawing or what I would call a finished piece.

jester: there are unfinished ones too. its very nice that you call my sketchbook pages finished paintings, but a sketchbook is a practice book, in my opinion. its not only a place for loose pencil sketches but also a place for experimentation with technique as well. i'm flattered that you think my sketchbook pages more closely resemble finished paintings, but they are what i consider sketches. they are prelimnary ideas, plans for larger paintings, and personal reflections-in book form. dont hate because i do full color sketches, this is what happens when you work on them daily for 8 years, you develop a technique that works for you. but ill tell ya what, just for you, tomorrow's page will be rough black and white sketches from life, because i dont just rock"finished paintings" in my blackbooks, they contain practically every mark i make with pen or pencil within the 6-12 months that i use them.

el coro - thanks for your answer. I'll watch out for tomorrow's page!

What I would still like to know - how large are your "sketches"? Do you work with different sized sketch books or do you prefer a special size? What's your opinion to ring-bound and book-bound variants?

I started working with themed sketch books (about 2 years ago) and only recently decided that I spent more time searching for the "right" one than actually drawing, not to speak of just having the "wrong" sktechbook on me.

Anyways . great forum idea! And great sketches!

Yah, definitely post some sketches, El Coro. You've got one page of sketches on the main conceptart.org page... and it blew me away. I couldn't even tell if it was pen or pencil. Post a bunch of these if you can.

I'm really inspired by your approach to your sketchbooks. It looks like you did them for yourself because you enjoy doing them, which sounds simple, but it seems like something I've forgotten on occasion.

    Great work... keep it up.
