pretty damn awesome. Love the details. My only nitpic is that it doesn't quite look finished in places. Otherwise I love the sort of "zombie-robot" motif
Cool job.

HIRE. ME. i draw stuff.
FOLLOW ME. i blog stuff.
this is one of those paintings i wish i had made. or rather wish i had the ability to make. i love it! i may be notorious for my positive feed back but this more than deserves it.

They have that great, haphazard, junkyard look, which makes them look that much better.
Also though, I think that the characters themselves dont look really that threatening, but the fact that they're shown looming mindlessly toward the viewer makes them eerie enough to be scary. I like 'em.
Oh yeah, about the figure in the 'middleground' on the left, I think you should change the color of the insignia on his faceplate. It looks like it was supposed to resemble the grill of a car. In the full version, it just looks like a random chunk of metal. In the detail shot though, it looks like an insignia for something. If you made it a dingy gold, I think it would help it stand out some more. Now however, you can't tell what it is, and it just looks like there's a piece of dingy whiteish metal there.
These are awesome though, and I'd love to know what game they're from.
This is a job well done.
I love the atmosphere that you created on this image, which sort of emit that eerie, lonely and hopeless feeling to it.
The zombie robots are just plain cool man. The designs are fine the way it is, whether it's simple and less mechanized in design because as a whole it makes an aesthetically pleasing visual. If you're trying to capture mindless robots come to life, then this is the way to go!
Very cool. The rusted metal texture especially is painted really well.
i really like the faeded detail, very nice. These are the kind of robots they should have had in the 2nd Rennaisance short.
nice stuff nice mix of steam punk and the animatrix. the texture and surface detail is clear and sharp. i like it.

nothing to lose so go for it

wow, me likey!
only crit is that the robot on the right could have a little more contrast or light on it.. pretty awesome color mood though!
wanna see more!

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!
Oregano - I agree, some of the places don't look very finished looking back on it now.
foster - Thanks!!!! (long-time fan)
Paul - I kinda struggled with making them look dangerous and gangly/zombie-like. I opted for feeling menacing rather than looking dangerous. The insignia is supposed to look like a car grill, thanks for noticing. I'll probably go back and rework it a bit. Thanks!
Venndetta, Groover, dr01d - Thanks for all the positive feedback!
Thanks defcombeta and Lim. You're probably right about the contrast. Thanks again!
I gotta give it to ya, Nick, I didn't know you had such a creepy side. I am impressed to no end! There is nothing like some good 'ol rusted metal rendering to brighten one's day. I especially like the window into the nearest machine's head...sloshing fluid (blood?) within machinery is territory I know well! Great rust effects and pitting on the craniums.
Overall, you have journeyed well into creepytown! (This coming from a long time resident...)
How about a nice print on PBM?....he he!
Talk to you later,
W
i know this post doesnt help you much, but i like your picture a lot!!
BLAST ON YOU!![]()
argh-this scares hell out of me!
*flashback to animatrix:second renaissance*

GAH i can't stand looking at it for a longer time without getting freaked out!
superb job!

Always think about:
lighting! design! perspective! proportion!
And (self)motivation is still everything.
Awesome Nick! I like the one in the back right the best. Knarley!
this is one of the best pieces I've seen around here.....the coloring feels very natural and 'smooth'...I really like it a lot!
do you have a website or anything?
good luck and cheers
wow! This is such a cool piece, I love everything about it! Nice work.
holy crap, why is this not ranked.
do you have a web, page?
any other work I could see?
Great piece!
Sjajno!
Thanks Wayne. It'll be witing for you on Sat.
Thanks for all of the positive feedback! No website yet, still working on it. I'll try to post more as I have the time.
awsome work mate. little to say here but that... maybe make the myst or fog more evident i kind dont like the fact that the distant robots just get blurred by the background but it might be just me. preferance is key i guess.
nice! i love it. I thought of one sugestions though: what if the close robot had some light on it that does not hit any of the others? maybe it's coming from a light on it's chest or from a bot that's not in the picture. i thought of this amazing (half-done) nox image.
this painting really speaks to me, I just keep going back to it. To save time I put it on my wall paper.
Just a compositional question:
I have been told as a rule of thumb that acent colors should be used in 3's. This being said, you have one powerful red light in your painting and it seems to work. I was just wondering if you wanted to comment on your prosses in getting this result.
Enough typing, I'm going back to obsess over your painting somemore.
Ps.
I'm anxious about seeing more of your work.
regards,
Sorry for the delayed response. I do appreciate the feedback!
Slav - I thought about making the fog a bit more obvious but couldn't figure out how to do it without losing more of the foreground than I wanted. I may try to rework that when I get a chance to revisit some of the other areas.
ozan - good suggestion, may be a good way to introduce another color into the composition.
LEN - Wow man, Thanks! I haven't heard of that particular rule, but I was told that you should try to use odd numbers for groupings in your compositions. I guess this one breaks all of those rules, not really sure why it's successful though. Thanks much!
This is proof that rules can be successfully broken. The odd number rule is a great starting point, but one should never slavishly follow such ideas. Do what works for the image, not that pesky mental art instructor we all carry in the back of our minds.
The image will tell you what it needs. Listen to it.
BTW, Nick, the deisel exhausts are a great touch. I hadn't even noticed those before. Not only are they out to kill you (the viewer), but they are going to pollute the area for any survivors...
Thanks for the print! It looks fantastic. Pick one of mine and it is yours.
Later man,
W
cool piece. great air in this one. it feels in need of a little more definition in a couple spots, but still nicely done.

I love the overall feel but the one in the front is bothering me. his lense is wonky i dont think it would have that yin and yang look to it unless it was shaped all wierd. Also it looks kinda chrome which is distracting unless theres going to be more chrome? if not id suggest clearing it out and making it a dark cavity for a camera type lense or two lenses like eyeballs. itd have to be kinda subtle and dark to be effective. ugh i dont mean to nit pick but the highlight on his head bothers me too, i dont think that type of metal would highlight that much and its a dark day. maybe lighten up the sky around his head to pull out that shape more? i dunno otherwise i love the way its going has a good overall feel to it.
just mah two pennys

There is somethng really inspiring about this piece that make me want to try doing a robot illustration. I love the variety of robots it makes it look they were building themselves out of spare parts at a junkyard. Love that feel.
I hesitate to get nitpicky about it because I find it so easy to over work a piece and wreck it. But here I the thinks I would do a bit diff it were me. The contrast of blacks in their arms seems inconsistant with the lower body sections. I realize there is a fog effect going on but either the arms need to be muted in places or the lower parts need pumped up.
The smoke almost seems a bit neglected and not quite finished. It seems you would see some of the light that is hitting strong on the heads also be effecting the smoke.
Through I like the red eye on the one it seems unresolved as to what is causing it. It seems more liek a lazer dot being shot at it that a glow from the eye itself. Maybe it it was behind soem sort of glass.
Just remember all this crit is nitpick smegma. It is a really fine piece and if thats the way you like it, thats the way it should be.
I spent some time updating some areas and trying some of the suggestions posted here. I added some color to the foreground robot, but it I felt like it took away from the overall feel the limited color palete had, so I took it back out. I wanted to find out what your thoughts were on this before I tried anything else.
Thanks

The power of this piece IS the limited palette, Nick. That coupled with the subject matter form a very unified front which is countered by the bright red focal point (no pun intended...!). I'd trust yourself and leave it as is.
You know what they say about too many cooks in the kitchen...
