color theory

color is a huge weakness for me so right now im reading a good book on color theory called 'the book of color' and it states the primary pigment colors are magenta, yellow and cyan. i've always heard red, yellow, blue. are ryb the true primaries?

I suggest buying a color wheel,,,,
the color wheel helps me come up with color schemes using
Triads and Diads
THEY are so helpfull...
I'll have to get back to ya on that,,, I can not find my color
theory book!!!! :chug: :chug:

These threads and that book are a great start. (Thanks Foster and Manley) They are worth all the money and time it takes to study them. You'll notice a large improvment in your work after study this stuff. Although the study is never ending. Also do a search before you ask technique and theory questions. There are alot of old buried jewels.

Cyan, magenta and yellow are basically the main colours if you´re using a substractive coulourscheme. Add black and you have the printing colours you´re usng in offset-printing. Nearly every printer on yo computer is using this base-colours. And if you got the hang of mixing them you can do nearly every colour.

During my professional education we got a Design class, where we just had this colours and had to reproduce pictures to get a a hang of the printing principles. It´s a good practise if you want to try out traditional media.

Cyan, magenta and yellow (CMYK) are the primary colours of the light, and red, green, blue (RGB) are primary colours of the pigments.
Cyan - is kinda light-blue, Magenta is between red and pink and Yellow is.. :-)

Most of the printers use CMY colours, but in the "painting-world" we use RGB colours as a primary.

When you mix all the CMY colour - you`ve got white light (see the rainbow or the Pink Floyds` "The Dark Side Of The Moon" cover), and when you mix all the RGB colours you`ve got black.

Sorry Yaseck, it´s vice versa.

CMYK are pigmentcolours (here we say substractive colours because if you mix all of them you get black) and you´re using them for print, drawing etc. and RGB are light colours, like e.g. in a monitor. They´re called here in Germany additive colours because if you mix red, green and blue light on a screen you get white.
