    Sam's sketchbook

Well, I was posting this in the it's finished section for some reason. Since it is daily I figured I should post it here...Also I can post sketches. Anyway, tell me what you think and keep me going. These are all a day each, well 2.5 to 4 hours...I think, i don't really time myself. More to come. Thanks

Here's some Bridgman studies, I'm starting with his constructive anatomy book. After that, these are some spaceship sketches attempting a scott robertson technique he has on his hovercraft dvd. Then I took two of the thumbnails and did some real fast painting, each render is one hour. I limited myself to the length of one cd that way I could gauge the limit by what song I was on....Let me know what you think and what I should work on..Thanks

    -liam.c, alrighty, here goes.
-JackalAnubis, thanks, I kinda started out doing this stuff drawing cars and whatnot.
-mentler, I am really impressed with your sketches, very inspirational to me. I want to get better with anatomy so I picked up a bridgman book and am on my way. As for Mechs, I would say, check out Gundam, Front Mission, or Neon Genesis Evangelion, and there's some cool stuff in Ghost in the Shell. There's tons more, but that's a good start.

well done my friend, well done. Although it's no great compliment, i think you surpassed me in all aspects of design, and life as well. Keep it up, and let me in on some of that skill.

    sam,

great to see your stuff, god your a machine. How is your internship going? I love what your doing, I do have a few comments though (things that I'm struggling with)

First your figures are a little stiff, It's the designers disease. Something that's helped me is drawing with my hand completly off the paper. Also drawing with your knuckles dragging on the paper helps as well. Keep it up though , It's just milage.

Also your vehicles are great, though I'm a little bothered by your edge treatment. Some of your edges could stand to be more defined but that will come with more experience. It took me a couple of years to know what my painting teacher was talking about when she mentioned lost and found edges.

One last thing, your vehicles are not reflecting there back grouds and you loosing a real oportunity to pump up your presentation. The red, hover car shows this the most. Did you see Scotts renering demo? It was killer, I took a few minuts to apply what he showed , in the red car.

I tried to get some of the sky reflections on the surface tangent to my eye, also I blurred the shadow to give the car more altitude. Now I need to get back to work. Take care,

More Bridgman studies, I'm starting to take liberties with these studies. Adding my own lines and contours. Anything to describe the form and learn the figure. Then two more renders. I wasn't really happy with the last couple ones I've done. I will take the blue one to a further finished level for sure. An environment attempt last night. Then here are some characters in progress, this is why I took a step back to study anatomy....haha

-horsedog!, Yes I got your first post ever! Awesome. However, you are talking a lot of gibberish. Stop spreading the lies man. Keep rockin it. Can't wait till fall quarter so we can chill again, rock independent studio, and thai express!

-LEN, Thanks a ton for bringing be back to lessons from the workshop. I was totally there for scott's demo, wouldn't miss it, anyhow, when i come back to practice, things just slipped. So thanks for reminding me. Um, the internship is going great, I have a lot of freedom, the people who work there are awesome, and I really like the Portland area, so I'm having fun. Good point on the edge treatment too. Keep in touch for sure.

    Nice loose GB studies!

You are right to try to make them yours!
You may not know that he did these on a wall above eye level with charcoal on the end of a 3 or 4 foot stick :::::: usually drunk :::::: which is one reason the style seems so elusive..

Remember the more you know :::: the more you see
Draw what you know, not what you see, and then see what you draw.

You are crankin out stuff like a machine, keep it up. Your spaceships definaltly have a little too much Scott Robertoson feel to them. Try to come up with ships in a different technique. Your robot designs are looking cool, just a few perspective problems. If I have time I will try to do some overlays.Your enviornments are looking good. Your chicks at the bottom need some work, of corse i can't draw chicks to save my life. Well take care and I will try to post some stuff here soon. Keep up the hard work, I can tell that your stuff is getting better though.

Sam you are a machine. Your progressing great, but I think I may have something that will help your figure work.

Aproach them more as shapes, as ID'ers we tend to get focosed on defining things with lines. Try to get away from that and see what you can do drawing with shadows. I hope I'm making sence, I've been pulling some mad hours so I may be mad ????!!!!!!!!

Working with conte' and news print helps, I'd bet you'd see improvement right away with that medium. Pencil can sometimes be a little stiff.

    OK, back to work.

    Take care,

Some sketches during the austin workshop and some after, then more bridgman studies! I've had some serious computer problems for the past week so I'm trying to get my workstation back up and runing like usual, more to come soon.

-Dvance, Thanks man, I always appreciated when you would overlay and make corrections on my stuff at work, I really learned a lot. So yeah, if you have some time rock it. I know you're busy. Yeah, those thumbs look scott robertson style, but far from scott robertson quality...haha. I've been watching his dvd's so....i guess that kinda carries over you know? I'm working on breaking away though. Yeah I agree that my figure is kinda questionable so, I'm drawing from bridgman, my plan is to go through all his books...might take some time but I think it will build a good foundation. Keep in touch.

-LEN, I took a couple of figure drawing classes before and have worked with conte, I agree, you do learn a lot, I'll post some images of some older figure stuff once I find them..And I'll go to the local art supply store and pick some up for some studies for sure. Otherwise, I'm taking a open figure session next quarter at school, I'm pretty excited to get back into it. I've been working with air marker at work, it's pretty fun, maybe after I leave this co-op they'll let me post some images of what I've been working on..? Hopefully..

-mentler, Feel the underlying forms, totally, I need to learn structure, I think that's one good thing that ID guys can carry over from their disipline into figure work, to really know how things go together, I'm working on it as usual. Can you recommend some good skeleton refrences?

great work man, i love the bots. Anatomy is a whole different horse, my advice to you is to try and break the solid structuring approach that tech drawings call for. Since it's already ingrained in your ability, emphasizing flowing organic forms will make your figures more convincing.

    great stuff man, keep posting.

Well, here's some older stuff, some environment compositions, ships, robots, and figure drawing. The group of figures are 5 min poses. I'll post some more stuff soon.

-steak-tron, Thanks for posting a reply, I have a lot of ground to cover on my figure drawing, thanks for the advice. I checked out your sketchbook, really nice stuff, a real good inspiration. Too bad we didn't hang out in Austin, well there was that 202 thunderdome.

    sam,
When you're drawing the robots maybe you shouldn't draw the interior lines. Just draw the silhouettes. Right now all your deviation is occurring within the silhouettes. You only have a few different types of outlines. My favorite robot is the only asymmetric one, I don't know why you didn't do anymore like that. From talking to you it sounds like maybe you're interested in diversifying your style so I I'd suggest getting one of those flexible coils for making custom curves and maybe some french curves templates, throw down some curves and try to make robots starting with that. These are all very geometric and square so maybe it would teach you something new.

Thanks for the replies in my threads by the way. We've got some good healthy c&C from each other. You better make it to my open figure drawing sessions on wednesdays.

-Joeslucher, I agree with you that in general I need to develop some new design languages and forms and skill....However with these robots, I am going for that proportion or silhouette for a reason. Just trying to make minor changes. I'll sketch some different silhouettes and post them. I'll work with some curves too. I will defenetly be there for the open figure sessions, as long as there's a place to draw, I'll be there. You better come watch Gnomon demos on Saturdays.

    yo brown...

most definitely you have improved in the past month... i've seen improvements with your detail concerns....

you haven't settled on a specific style, but i think that your aircraft rendering during the Feng studio is definitely a style that communicates the concept best...

keep working out your line work... you'll get there...

i appreciate your honesty with my work... and you bet i'll let you have it on yours... hahaha... but definitely constructive...

So, I agree that I don't really have a style yet, I kinda jump around, every quarter I try new things. I'm still searching. This is the older stuff Kooch is talking about. I focused on different things and took more time with the line work on these ones. Let me know what you think. .

-steak-tron, Thanks, I'll have more figure work when I start school again. Two more weeks. Oh, and I got an armadillo belt buckle, it reminded me of that armadillo tank you did, man that rocks my socks!

-kooch, Thanks for the demos and thanks for the encouragement! Keep an eye on this thread cause after I leave I'll still be posting. Thanks for everything man, you've helped me out a ton! Now, back to work. .

    Bone Doctor Diagnosis!

Really nice figure works ~ I am impressed!
Need to work on the breast anatomy a little but that is easy to fix with a little study!
Pages of figures have pretty good feel ~ you could even work on composing them more ~ old master studies (and they were just studies)
have a wonderful sense of composition in terms of how the things on the page relate.
Come by the office for a check-up when you are ready!
I think I smell a little Vilppu here!

Some sketches from the renders above and some other sketches. I have some new stuff to post soon, I want to finish a few more things so I can post them all at once. Hopefully I can put some stuff from work up too. We'll see.

-mentler, Thanks, I'll do some more studies for sure. I didn't know who Vilppu was, thanks for giving me something new to look to. Any artists you think I should look into and study let me know cause I don't know a whole lot. Thanks again, and I'll be around for the check up soon.

-xephon, Yeah, I like that red one too, I'm gonna work with that style a bit more, I've been kinda everywhere with my style, just searching trying to find new ways to do things.

-liam.c, I agree about the robot heads, you can kinda see that in my mind I guess that's where I was going, the orange render above has the head on that sketch page. Anyway, I like that blue ship too, but now that you point it out, I remember that I was going to finish it a little more. Thanks for reminding me. It needs some lovin.
