    topic:

    ROUND#292, Falkor Redesign

I've been sitting on this topic for quite awhile, and figured i would finally do it this week.

Falkor, is a luck dragon from the book-movie "the never ending story" for more info check this out... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...the_Luckdragon

your job is simple this week. show us a new take on Falkor. try to avoid the film design, and make him with your own sense of what you think a luck dragon would look like.

    Requirements this week...

    - design your take on a luck dragon. the rest is going to be very left open this week. so just have fun.

    Deadline:

    March 26th 7:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

guys please remember its still Falcor that helps the kid along his journey,l don't think the kid will really get that soft 'l'm your friend' vibe coming from a rabid creature filled to the brim of teeth, claw and distortion.

my own two cents but l think keeping this luck dragon friendly looking should be a high priority this c.o.w

@Shahan: your dragon has a pretty cool otherworldly feel to it, but i find the huge claws a little out of place.

quick sketch, trying to keep it feeling carefree and benevolent.

    Awesome sketches guys!

Here are some of mine (: Going for an oriental-type dragon. The topic suggests we avoid the film design, but to me, a luck dragon is a lot like Falkor. White and fluffy and a bit feline. Definitely trying to make something original though. Right now I'm just exploring some basic designs and trying to understand how to manipulate a lion's head into what I have in mind without having it look totally anthro-furry.

    falkoi

the description mentioned swimming without wings, and luck- so i thought a koi reference would be appropriate. i threw in a bit of scarlet macaw for some added color and goofiness. I will probably add something there- a plane maybe or some kids on a hill- to give scale and location. cant have this looking like its underwater.Name: falkor redesign0.jpg

I finally found the design I'll be going for. This is just a quick color concept. Nothing is final yet. The colors are a bit off since I painted it on my school's computer. To me they appear a bit desaturated and monochrome, where as their they were more vibrant and deep.

@.pc i like the elagantness of your piece, great brushwork and flow. captured a very majestic feel, Since it's really preliminary I can't say much crit, just look at the neck/head turn, the wrinkle in the skin seems off and make sure your values make certain focal points pop, right now it's kind of flat overall. can't wait to see more.

@DefiledVisions wow man bravo! I love it a lot, solid studies and solid design as a result, I can learn from you. 2nd post looks incredible, very magic like , kind-faced and mythic-dragonish

@CassandreBolan Lol nice man that's an awesome take, would love to see more, idea and concept looks great so far.

@Joey-b I love it man, I like the attitude of your dragon. you've captured a nice otherworldy thing there, although I'm not crazy about the flat nose/face design. Also make sure the arm in the background is correct to the one in the foreground, solid work so far looks like you're almost done!
    really hope you finish.

hey guys I'm not sure how my critique/advice is, I really don't know what i'm talking about, just going off feel and whatnot. Let me know what I can do to improve

    Here's my latest dead horse:
concept: Falkor from a different universe, rings, halos wings and chains, supposed to be like good luck charms... like horseshoes... stars clovers and blue moons...

most people post here to get crits so

I like where yours is going, no really big crits only thing is we cant see the whole body and maybe a bit humanish? (anatomy)

    Defiled visions;

Very nice work! and very recognizable!

Any crits at this point would be awesome, I think I see an issue with the neck already. The hardest part so far was getting the anatomy of the wings right.

    falkoi

keep trying to decide on the feel for the atmosphere...went with a dream sunrise palette to keep up the friendly vibes. added kids on a hill for scale and depth. need to add details. sigh....hopefully can finish some more before baby wakes up!

Shahan: LOVE the uniqueness of the first iteration. I prefer it to the second but they are both cool. That circle makes me think its a toy that the dragon's playing with-underlines its friendliness.

DefiledVisions: love your design too and impressed by all the sketches. i usually get so impatient i just dive in but youre making me rethink that. your design is cool, has a bit of an anime flair to it.

LukasA: I use different modes depending, but mostly COLOR at first. Keep the tones muted on the COLOR layer or it will look like the teletubbies threw up everywhere Also, you will most definatley probably have to do some opaque painting on top of the COLOR layer to make it look polished- so its not really a shortcut per say, just a good process to keep the values strong. If I every finish this entry more, youll see how it changes after the intial COLOR pass.
oh, and when you add color try doing one layer of a color, and then add some glazes over top in an opposite color (ex: warm COLOR layer such as muted orange with cool blue-grays over top)

well i did decide just to finish it, went back to the original sketch's values a bit with the darker background. I thought the blue sky and clouds was just a bit blah blah so i did a nightscape instead, experimented with some textures, and voila!

CassandreBolan That has come out really well, the colours and textures give it a very "childs imagination / dreamy" quality. I think you could push this a tiny little bit further.... just maybe the detail on the beak could be sharper. (my opinion only!) The skin looks awesome and it feels really original.

    Here's my entry for COW292:

Decided to go with an Arowana as my base for my design. Since Falkor is considered a dragon of luck. And Arowanas are considered to be symbols of luck and known as the dragon fish in Chinese culture. Hope you guys like it. Might edit or tighten out if i have time.
Comments and Crits are much appreciated

.pc: i like the atmosphere and design of the dragon. Maybe try to play with an overlay layer and try some colors on top of it.
CassandreBolan: I think the design is just perfect. I would try to tone down the lights of the city a bit because the focal point is fighting with the lights for attention.
DefiledVisions: wow the purple cat dragon is just beautiful. I really really like it. But now I feel that what I was going for, is a bit similar. I swear it wasn't on purpose.

vincebiwer: love the design and all your sketches! reminds me of some poisonous sea creature/lhasa apso
matias: yours is so cute! It definatley looks happy and lucky. Its also a nice twist because the original falkor was canine. Just needs a bit more love on the rocks, its gorgeous

Was looking at llamas as a guide. Probably not going to finish it, just playing around. Too much 'work' work to do, not enough time to really dive into this one.
