Although a degree is nice for self development, it is by no means necessary. You do not need a masters degree in architecture either.. just like no-one needs a masters degree in biology to draw good anatomy.
I can say this a million times over but it's true: you just gotta draw draw draw and draw some more, draw until you drop. Use loads of references. Study your surroundings. Study perspective, colour, values. Study everything. Art like the pictures you just showed is not something that comes to you in a few months. It will take years of hard work... like any skill to acquire. But the result is definitely worth it.

Start a sketchbook here on CA. Give us a chance to have an insight into your work and give you helpful feedback. Having people to push you into the right direction speeds things along tremendously.

You need to master perspective, the amount of details is just something you get used to if you train yourself enough. Our visual system is built to be able to recognize the amount of detail and the closer it get's to reality the realistic the picture looks, it doesn't matter what kind of detail. Oh anyway by perspective i mean camera shooting too (so photography knowledge, and a little bit of lense distortion understanding). The other thing you need to learn is how to learn to understand what you need to be better at something, asking is a good way but only you will know exactly what you need and what you know already

    Hi darkdemonking,

As Hitsu//San said, the best place to start out is by learning about perspective. Although the images you have posted may look complicated and overwhelming at first, there is actually nothing in any of them that is not a simple geometric form, like a cube, a cylinder, a cone or a torus. I've done a quick paintover to show some of the basic shapes, everything else in the ship structure is just a combination of shapes like these.

If you spend some time getting the fundamentals of perspective nailed, this will give you a really decent foundation to build on and will be designing awesome things before you know it! Hope this helps, if you have any questions just ask.

    Good luck

    K
