    WIP Centaur Sculpture

Started this sculpture last weekend. Im currently in the process of building up the body and arms. I am using Super Sculpey firm using both additive and subtractive techniques. The Sculpture stands approximately 17 inch tall. Does anyone know whats the best method to go about making a mold? Please feel free to critique.

Looking good so far! I would like to see a more interesting pose of the legs, though.

He's going to be very tricky to mold- you'll probably have to cut him into quite a few pieces. I'm sure someone more experienced could give you better advice, but I can't see how you could get away without at least separate molds for each arm, at least two of the legs, the head, each ear and horn, plus the body with the other two legs. This book has a good introduction to the various casting and molding methods and materials.

A silicone RTV mold material is probably best (but it's also expensive). I suggest taking a shot at casting some simpler and smaller figures to get the hang of it first; that's what I'm doing now myself. If you're mainly interested in casting the figure, rather than having a permanent original, you can use modeling clay instead of Sculpey- it's much cheaper, and reuseable.

Hey thanks for the reply. I also agree , the standing pose needed to be changed to something more dynamic. In the process i also changed his face. Im going to make some sort of barbarian babe jabbing a harpoon type weapon through his throat. I think next sculpt ill look into alternative clays, like chavant , monster clay or castaline. Heres what I have so far.
