Importance of learning figure drawing [QUESTION]

I'm fairly new to this community in that way that I've only been lurking for quite a long time now. But figured it's time to jump in.

So my question is as stated in the title, how important is figure drawing... WHEN wanting to learn digital painting?

I didn't think I could "skip" it. Just couldn't figure out how important it was in accordance to doing digital paintings. But I guess its really really important then.

I was only wondering how important it was and much focus I should put on it.. completely new to it.

No worries - just one of those questions that sort of depends on where you want to go with your art. If you're not sure at this point then just touch on all bases and see what you like. I would advise you to have some sort of idea regarding direction and goals. Industrial designers have a very different skill set and awareness compared to landscape painters...who are different from portrait artists...and so on.

As a starting point though you can't go wrong with solid study of the fundmentals, because they apply to all of it. Good luck!

I would say as much time as you are able to, in order to see a tangible improvement. But keep in mind that life studies encapsulate far more than just figure drawing. Different shapes, surfaces and areas all serve to train you how to render a 3dimensional form into two dimensions. Alternate your studies with drawing for fun and for the quick results, post your work on the boards for advice and critique.

I don't have a certain goal yet as this has been a side thing for a very long time (I work as an animator), but I've been wanting to start for so long. But maybe I should make some goals that are reachable, get some small victories.

I'll start doing some figure drawing, and get outside and sketch as soon as I can. And post my progress in these boards for feedback/critique.
