Cool new designs turning up, excellent!
Done, apart from any comments? Would have preferred a tighter shot but rules are rules I guess…
Huh, its gone an odd colour? weird, must be a profile thing...might drop it to grayscale.

Here's my wip. I had to revert back to grayscale because my values were wonky.

Gobsmackingly awesome stuff this week. Here's what I've got so far.

So many great pieces, dont even know where to comment:
@smolin: nice pose, make sure he doesnt actually look like a dead guy. Hes still alive.
@JSN: Pretty heavy guy. Such a snow scenery is tough work, because of all the reflective light and rather limited colors. Make sure to get some good refs for such a diffult light.
@Gamma Grey: Nice mood looks a little stiff though. Maybe lift one foreleg and change the arms a little ? I like the head and the armor already.
@Venger: Great job on the hair and face. The armor is impressive too. One point is that lifted leg, why does it have to stand on a rock ? That looks a little forced to me, maybe adjust the hoofe so that he simly lifts it, but doesnt stand on something.
@Zombi:Freaky
@Tsad:Nice 1st short, has a "pans labyrinth" feel to it. Really promising piece. Look out for the right lifted leg, it looks a little too far away from the left fore leg and I would make a safety check to see if horses can actually lift a leg that high.
So far:
I added a tribal symbol, something wolf skull like.

vaejoun and all the other incredible entrys really makes me want to pushes my limit. I'm trying to fix my drawing, but that basically means starting all over.

Soooooo many awesome images here!!!
I couldnt stay away, I had to come up with this much inspiration!!! Guys this is beyond awesome!
@Partisan, Im glad to see that you didnt give up!!!! Thumbs up....
@Vaejoun, WOW just WOW, but is this still a traditional centaur? Tut mir Leid wenn ich hinterfragend klinge aber die CHOW Regeln werden hier ziemlich straff durchgezogen..... :-S
@ Venger, your piece really amazes me....
This what i got so far, rerally worked a lot on the pose, any crit would be really helpfull!!!

Vaejoun: Noted about the stiff posture and thanks.
Worked some on the armor and axe.

Working some color. Not sure where else to go except into detail phase.

I gave up on the dynamic pose. I would need to study more horse anatomy to do that. So i opted for a more static pose.

GammaGrey wow! your colors are sick! I really need to do some studies to get those dynamic mixes, I feel like I'm still stuck in the monochromatic zone.
tsad great composition, horns lead the eye and the contrast behind the neck makes the head really "pop"
VengerAwesome piece overall; you have a real clarity I'm very envious of. Small suggestion, not sure the lightness on the cape really takes the eye anywhere. Maybe on the axe? I really dig those heads though; pretty sick!
ThujonNice sense of lightness and darkness so far. The left deltoid a little too far behind the back. Try drawing through the figure to see it placement might help out a little. Think of the size of the arm in relation to the other arm. I definitely look forward to see where this one is going! :]
This ChoW's really heating up! Good work so far everyone!

Oh man, Vaejoun your guy is frickin Awesome. iam very jelly
mine so far.

-Lionsketch Nice background so far, I like the composition and perspective in it. I think that the centaur could use a more dynamic pose for his legs. His face and expression are looking nice though!
-Vincebiwer Your costume and character design is looking good, I think that his pose, especially in the upper half, is looking a bit strange, like he is falling backwards. The color scheme is working well!
-GammaGrey Really great design. It feels like he should be looking at something though. maybe a victim cowering on the ground? Your colors are looking nice!
-Thujon I like the direction the axe is going, I look forward to seeing the armor to match it! I think you need to watch your anatomy, especially in the neck and shoulder area, as well as the proportion between horse and human parts. The background ambiance is looking nice!
Okay, it has been forever since I have done a chow. This one looks fun! Lots of great stuff!
Here is what I have so far.
I just started yesterday, because I always start these things late...
Lots of work to do!
Can't came up with any type of armor that doesn't cover his chest and belly, and looks good at the same time...

Heres to my first chowa quick wip. Now to get this thing finished before the cut-off!
Don't know if I'm going to be around Sunday to post in the finals thread, but this was a fun chow regardless. Everyone is doing an awesome job. I wish I could paint like you guys.
Anyway, here's where I'm at as of right now.

Mmmmm this might've gotten away from me but I can't seem to stop the direction its heading so I'll roll with it and see how it shapes up. If it finishes in time awesome otherwise this Chow was a fantastic kickstarter for a personal piece so thankees all around for the inspiration from everyone!
Jsn - establishing that horizon line really helps to ground him, I couldn't put a finger before exactly what was bothering me but that seems to be the answer
Smolin - great angles and shifts in the weight of the two forms. His hair...it vaguely reminds me of a powdered wig that George Washington would wear...
Gammagrey - your speed baffles me O.O Love the detail work already there in the armor can't wait to see me. adjusting the stance helped with the stiffness for sure
Lionsketch - for such a grumpy faced centaur that axe is just so happy and excited lol.
Matias - I'm glad you dropped the green levels of the skin, was a little to close in shade to the walking dead before. The armor/axe textures are fantastic
to all I missed, I can't wait to see the finished pieces this sunday and again thank you for the inspiration
and a special shout out to Catface - ::slow clap:: bravo sir, bravo
Small update from my side....I know the anatomy isnt prefect! This is really something I have to work on.... thanks for pointing that out!!!
Nice work all, cant wait for the final burning thread....
Any crit would be awesome!!!!!
Coming along really nicely guys. Love it when it's so much activity going on, makes me all warm inside. Some personal opinions incoming! Feel free to take it to heart or not listen at all!
Partisan You brought up some real nice arguments in your post before, I agree with most of it and I find it really commendable that you're doing another entry. Plus, it's looking better than the last one, sick angle and pose!
Gammagrey I think it helped a lot with lifting the leg, but his upper body still looks a bit stiff. Maybe make the arms more asymmetrical? Looking badass though, love the design of the armor.
Vaejoun Really nice illustration mate! Great composition and atmosphere. Seems like his left arm is disappearing a bit into the background though, I'd try separating the values a tad more!
Venger Very strong pose and personality, but something is lost under all the waist armor. I think that the human and horse parts feel disconnected in a way. I don't know if it's because I only see the two front legs or if I'm insane. You inspired me to try and enter the challenge, love it!
Matias Damn nice render man, very painterly. Those are solid materials aswell. Not entirely sure about all the black though, would be nice to see more of a value/color transition between him and the ground!
Some progress on my little pony guy. No idea where I'm going with the armor still. I'll probably just decorate it to hide my incompetence
![]()
Good round guys!
Greyskill: Looking good, just one thing, the front leg closest to camera looks odd bent. Horses don't really bend both front legs just standing, they're quite stiff legged. I think it should be lock-kneed straight, the back leg is fine as-is then. Hopefully that makes sense!
Spellsword95: Don't know if you caught any of the earlier conversations about photo paintovers, but part of the challenge rules was no photo paintovers. Sorry if you've already switched the horse body out, but I thought I just give you a heads up as it could hold you out of going to the vote.
z0mbi: Love it man! the options does say it doesnt have to be colour so you might be ok!! Also, nice work on making him 'anatomically correct' back there!![]()
Dranok The Pale ..Essence of Horse

Some progress. I increased the scale of the horsey parts, because he was looking a bit top-heavy.
