Kingkostas - great textures. I like the left two, the top one is my favourite but I feel that the focus is too low and the secondary ring could be shown in the foreground not background, so you lead the eye towards the city, not away. Just my thought.

Here are my three main ideas, 1st is a quarry with waterfalls and a vatican-esque city with a promanade and public square. 2nd is a more dark, island, city with a foreboding background, maybe some ships / smaller islands for scale. 3rd hotel room, overlooking the city. This will be a good opportunity to practice these values so gonna work up all three in greyscale.

Nicky: its a great start actually since you can build distance/space using layers of differing values, closer is darker etc. . . its good practice.
Dayle: I like the framing in no3 maybe combine no1 and 3 together! no1 has some great ideas.
Kingkostas: actually your pen thumbnails in your sketchbook rock as well, all of these have a lot of potential.

sorry for being absent mates, i had to do some health stuff [i am safe for now] and i have to work hard to get some more work. But anyway i think i may manage to do something till the deadline.

    Interesting stuff here
Dayle- Thanks very much for the feedback mate, this needs tryout to see how it will look. Btw i like very much your first thumbnail, i immediately felt its potential. The others are not that well, maybe you were tired after the first or you liked it that much that you didnt want to explore more, but had to ahahah . Anyway in my opinion the first one has better value arrangement and design of the concept.
Nickybeats- Yo mate, thanks very much!!! No you dont suck, probably you are still confused on how to approach them. First i would recommend to start with greyscale, no need to tire yourself with an extra attribute to think of.Use your energy early on to describe the most important stuff of your concept and use greyscale to lose battery less fast . I would need to see more to give more feedback
AndrianNagorski- Hello mate!! Thanks, this one looks like an interesting idea, however you have to find some reference that fits that setting as much as possible and use it to really see how to represent more space, how the atmospheric perspective functions at that certain point of view etc. So i mean, use a ref to get the info you dont know. Compositionaly i would move the city-element-shape a little more to the right, just a little though. Keep up!!!
Cooolbrain-Still a little rough to offer some feedback mate, anyway if you have time, keep it up
Wilkerson-Thank you very much man!!! I will try to do it, although i am not sure
MarkoMarkovic-Interesting idea mate, try to fit everything on a good perspective. This needs refining since you have the basic idea down.

Ok mates sorry i dont have anything right now, but i thought i will share my thoughts. Keep up wherever

MarkoMarkovic & Adrian Nagórski - I like the color pallete
Dayle, 1st and 3rd concept look promising, can`t wait too see how this will develop
KingKostas - very creative thumbnails, hard to choose just one

Yay, awesome topic and nice stuff so far.

    Kostas, these already look fantastic!

Nicky, for me it often helps to start an enviro with really big, random brushstrokes, especially if i dont have something specific or a certain composition in mind. Just go crazy with some forms and shapes without thinking too much about it until you see something you like. And yeah, as kostas already said, starting in greyscale helps too, especially for value-control.

Some start from today, not sure if i like it and go on with it. These scifi-ish cityscape things always feel to be totally outside my comfort zone...good reason to give it a try and practice it

still no reference used, just messing around with the idea in my head, might draw like thousands of pilgrims heading to the city.

    Flame_Unquenchable: i see you hustling hustling . . . .
Mhugo: impressive, adding ships?? potential sci-fi yachts :-)
    Mikus: interesting start.
Marko: seems a little confusing are you having floating city structures?

Flame - I like the 80's Miami / Rockstar idea better than the last one. But maybe, instead of literally going GTA with the graphics, think about giving it a twist. Do some cross genre / media stuff. I think there is something really cool here to explore... Reference car interiors, maybe that's where the real paradise is found (have you seen the Pagani huayra interior?)

Kingkostas - thanks, I will come up with stronger thumbnails over the weekend, they were just quick ideas to stop me forgetting what I wanted to try out... the second one will make more sense next time ;-)

Mhugo - Right up my street *.* I LOVE those edges. You are definitely one to watch on this site.

Adrian - I see what you are doing with the whole oasis / desert idea (which is great btw) maybe a juxtaposition with the technogical support infrastructure and the vegetation, what would it take to support such a place? You could have fun detailing all the mechanical elements against the soft natural forms. It reminds me of Noah's Ark.

Mikus - Thanks for the feedback. I like the elements in your wip and sense of scale. The composition seems slightly off balance, with the decreasing verticality and strong left hand edge... but definitely will be interesting to see how you progress and tie everything together.

Did a little work on the car interior. I took my original and faded it back, going to try and see what I can do here. Not sure if I want to go somewhat scifi, or old school, maybe a blend of 80's miami with sci fi cars. Thanks for the feedback Dayle, yah my initial Idea shouted rockstar games but I didn't want to rip them off completely. That Pagani interior is pretty sweet. Some refs are attached.

Hey guys, thought I'd jump in, I don't do much enviro stuff so I thought I better start practicing!
Anyways, my city is like a refugee camp after a cataclysmic WWIII or something, where people have escaped and set up basically a container city in the treetops. Not fancy but after war, just by comparison, living free and peacefully could be paradise. Also after major wars the male population is way down, so the chick to dude ratio is crazy. Green grass, pretty girls... paradise!

Matias, good stuff, solid story behind can make it works, this can go very well with impressive Forrest style sun rays..
Marko Markovic, it will be interesting to see an update as your city looks promising although I don`t like to see too many photo-textures
Flame: last one is definitely the most dynamic one, too early to say more at the moment, interesting WIP with a view from car, I can only guess person in this car is on his way to beach for a drink and nice views
Kvenh, very good camera, I also like perspective and overall mood, I hope you will finish it.
Adrian, nice update can`t wait to see more, its going into right direction
Mhugo, what can I say... I put my WIP and I thought it`s good... next day I saw your work and it made me feel really small

and this is my update, I listened to all tips to balance upper right corner, due to this I changed the island city into overland, added some mountains... Here I have a question as this is my first landscape I started in grey-scale, do you have any good tutorials of how to add color at this point?

Flame_Unquenchable - I know what you mean, I feel the same. Urm... have you seen those night-time long exposure photos of streets / traffic, where they have streams of lights from all the cars? Keep at it and solve those problems! (not meant to sound patronising!)

Marko - Thanks. I meant to say before that I really like your use of colours and transparancy.

Mikus - I was gonna post this link anyway (1) but might be specifically useful for you to see as you asked the question on colour. But to be honest I don't think there is a simple answer, as they're many different approaches you just need to keep reading, learning and experimenting (2).... hopefully one day some professional will answer with a "this is how you do it" tutorial, but so far nobody has! I mean check out Pixeltuner and his thumbnail tutorial vid page (3) for something really cool.

    1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz3JW...layer_embedded

    2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCmz3XuS6TI

    3 - http://conceptart.org/forums/sketchb...e-%5E_%5E.html

I am not liking my composition, I am gonna try and mix it up at street level with a classical / sci fi architectural scene based on my wips. I really need to follow this foreground / middle / distance rule with major elements and try and get some depth. So much potential with this brief, I really don't want to waste it.

    Something like this

Dayle: thank you, your comment made me wonder for awhile. your last thumbnail looks great, adding more skyscrappers in the background maybe?
you have the framing down with those pillars its great.

Flame_unquenchable: your latest wip is awesome, maybe tilt the angle of the car that you see the interior of, and them you can make
what is seen thru the wind shield the focal point. out side of that line of view can be blurred or less detailed.
    nice touch with the gps!

Mikus: stormy weather, i know i've recently played crysis 3 but i think you could isolate your city in a dome? I;m liking
the stream of light thru the clouds, i think your city must be dark so you just highlight one part of the city, and the
    rest keep them a silouettes?

Matais: very cool, i would copy and past the whole image into itself to add lots of levels, increaseing the percieved scale
as a huge epic shantty tree to city, reminds me of south africa, and the shacks where millions of people live in like
    the Soweto township.

    frontline combat footage WW2 video:
    http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=f3d_1362563581
    breaks me heart.

Marko: I see, yours is coming along great, im liking your sky, man detail this to hell and back man!!!

Kvenh: loving your second thumbnail, hope you have a chance to work on it some more.

Still just playing around, with night shifts breaking my spirit, i've only managed to dedicate a couple more hours . . . .

I'm liking 1, 2, 7 and 8 there Footsteps. I like the scale of 7, I think you could do a lot with the interior and then show the city fading off into the distance. You can put interior plants inside the walls there to give an idea of size and of rainforesty flora\fauna. 8 reminds me of the Gungan secret place, which is neat. 1 a shot leading up to the city, and 2 the paradise at night, a shot of the beach, etc. Right now I think 7 offers the most dramatic presentation options, but I'd get a second opinion.

thanks flame, of the least explained visually- 2 is supposed to be a floating pearl like city,a bit like a good guys death star. 4 is like a mining town or the only source of light in a cavern. 8 was me trying to get an interesting angle and scale. 7's my favourite too

I wanted to keep the interior shot, but I think I like this better.
