Hi there,

seen so many great things here, that I've decided to show my not so great sketches. Cosmic equation.
Be gentle, but feel free to criticise.

Drawn with markers (I'm a noob). It looks ridiculous and the bad photoquality doesn't help at all.

Tried a "cool" new approach: looked for about 2 minutes at a pic of Wolverine, closed it and started painting.
In fact I cheated a few times and checked the reference ;-)

Like i said, good work so far and try working with bigger brushes.
Try constructing, and look up loomis, bridgman, vilppu etc and draw after them
(sorry if you know them already and i'm just talking nonsense here)

Here's a unfinished try (and "finished" fail ;-)) to copy a master. The original artwork is a selfportrait painted by Lucien Freud (I'm afraid of posting the pic because of copyright stuff).

hey kopfscheu,from looking at you studies I would recommend spending equal amounts of time making value
studies,once you capture the right values it is much easier to capture the hue and saturation of the color.
also do other fundumental exercizes-perspective,construction,gesture.
you show some knowledge already,isolate your weaknesses and work with purpose.

This is John Malkovich wearing a raven on his head.
I set myself a limit of one hour, so it isn't finished (the raven has no feets and its wing is all wrong and John has no real ears, the blendig isn't done and so on) - perhaps I put a little more work in it, because I like the idea.

I really love the skin you're painting. You portraits are just lovely and really alive!

I would suggest to start with a grey background on those digital paintings, though. This would be easier on your eyes and generally helps speeding up the process.

General, full body anatomy seems to be your weakest point at the moment. Go and fill a few pages with gesture studies and keep up the great work

@ecki Thanks for your suggestions. It looks kind of weird, that you said "start with a grey background" and the next thing I'm posting is a half face on a white background... but the thing is: I've been drawing traditionally on white paper for so long. But I'll try it out!

hello kopfscheu ,that malkovich study is pretty good i like the sense of form and structure it has.
one thing I would suggest is to simplify your shapes and reduce your amount of values you work with,when copying think of the simple big planes,versus just copying what you see.
I think it helps when you describe the form with the minimal amount of information- you want your message to be clear and simple(at least I do!),you can always add stuff later.

Thanks. Yeah, I know, I paint all those - let's say it with Bob Ross - happy little accidents and details. Should study more fundamentally. Like you said before: value studies and construction. I did a lot of grayscale studies the past weeks, but it sucked. Ok, I sucked.

Something completely different: my first sculpture. It looks really strange, but hey: I had the biggest fun of my life (and the most dirtiest work area ever).

oh wow your attention to detail in the wrinkles of the face are awesome!
it seems like your pieces in traditional medium are much stronger than the digital ones (but the john malkovich one is freakin' great )

Wow, these are great pieces of work. I could really use some advice on using colours effectively. I’m a digital artist mainly but your advice would still help a great deal. I’m working on a piece at the moment but I’m struggling to exaggerate the colours and get the vibrant lighting effects.

Thanks a lot for your compliment. The sculpture-thingy is only about 2 inches high, so I just cut the wrinkles in with a little knife. As easy as that.

Really cool portraits! And the sculptures are coming along nicely. As others have said, watch your values and try doing some greyscale studies. Also focus on getting the major planes in on the faces before getting too caught up on the details. Keep it up

Great start to a sketchbook. Your marker sketches are in no way crappy that one of Philip Seymour Hoffman looks pretty damn good. You digital stuff looks good too, but like everyone has already said greyscale studies are good way to start off. Especially if digital painting is new to you. Oh and I'd like to see more anatomy stuff from you : P

Not much else to say for now. Your posting regurarly, so just keep that up and your good : )

A lot of nice work here :)
Im no expert but one of the best advice I got for gestures and drawing from life is to look at your subject more than you look at your drawing.
In other words - let your eyes dictate your hand. Your strokes will become much more confident, and by focusing on the subject you can start to break down the forms figure out the anatomy much better :)

I'm trying to take the advice with the grayscale studies seriously and sketched two faces with a ballpoint pen.
Aching wrist vs. ballpoint pen... 1:0 ;-)
(And I'm not very happy with the results, but hey, skill comes with practice. Hopefully.)

Lovely studies! That Hannibal piece at the top of the page is ace! I envy you ink work. The last post is excellent. Great communication of form, nice value ranges with the hatching, just solid all the way around. Keep posting!

Quick 15min sketch.
Grayscale studies are really hard, but I learn a lot from them.

Looking good!
You can push the highlights a little brighter. The brightest areas like on his nose tip or his forehead or his lip can go up to almost white.
Sometimes the trick I would use is put an actual grayscale next to what im working on so I remember to push the light as bright as possible and the shadow as dark as possible

I don't know, why I'm so shy when it comes to white-white and black-black. But I totally see what you mean. He's "a little bit" flat without real highlights (and shadows).

Really great head studies, but I would suggest maybe trying to do more constructed work from imagination or full bodies.

I know. It's just: I like painting heads and the plan is to "manage" heads first. I simply have the feeling that the whole anatomy thing makes no sense with my skill-level at the moment (see the actual pic).
