    Willing to teach environmental design-basics

Hey there guys. I've been thinking a lot if I should do this or not. The problem is I've never done this but have been heavily involved in critiquing other's work, Therefore, I've decided that it won't be much different. Let me know what you would like to learn and post links to your portfolios and or images so I can see who I'm dealing with. Hope to hear from you soon.

If you're still interested in doing this, I've been looking to improve my environments but need a good kick in the pants to get me moving.

The link to my sketchbook is in my sig but I can pull out specific images if you need them.

Hey there, thanks for the interest. I've checked out your environments. Let me just give you a quick critique before we start. Your problem is that you don't go beyond the point of putting in the basic shapes and base colors. I understand that this might be because you're not skilled enough to progress any further. Is there anything in particular that you would like to start with?

Historically, I've concentrated on figure drawing so I haven't really done much at all with enviros or perspective at all, so you're bang-on that it's a lack-of-skill thing. I'm just not sure how to go about adding textures and minor details without them looking fake.

I would also like to learn enviros featuring man-made objects. My long-term goal is to be able to do an entire scene with a character and props.

Alright guys. Since this is my first time teaching someone, please be patient with me as well I also know that we have different schedules so in those times that we're not working together, I would like for you guys to save my blog that has a good collection of concept art tutorials and practice: http://conceptartmasters.blogspot.com/ My goal here is to try something very different. I was thinking to create a youtube account and let you guys view the techniques I do to create things and or upon request. Another thing, maybe we can find a program that lets me do free streaming so we can be directly involved with each other. If you know about anything like that, let me know.

Let me ask you guys something, do you both have wacom? and do you both use Photoshop and which versions?

Lets start with the very basics which are thumbnails. Remember, thumbnails are not very large, mostly 1-2 inches in with and or height. While creating them, use black and white and just block in shapes, I don't want to see any details in them.

InCoum-you can follow me on deviant art :http://damjanvisnjic.deviantart.com/

    @DAMJAN:

I think that the youtube acount maybe could work better? something with streaming may work well.. but, it could be a little fdifficult to syncronize our time(?) ..anyway, any program like Skype or Msn may work fine for something like that i think? :B

I have a table, and i use Photoshop CS at home.. and CS3 in my work :B!
(but actually i'm tring to work more in traditional ways..)

Any special subject for the thumbnails? deadlines?
I'll work in something with prisma markers :B!(i hope it's ok)

I'll add you to my DArt.. but i'm not using it too much :B!

    Thanks!!

    DAMJAN, thanks for the links!
I've got an Intuos 3 and Photoshop at home. I'll have to let you know later on what version.

I'd also like to know what kind of subject you were thinking of with those thumbnails? Urban? Rural? Wilderness?

I'm also signed up for a landscape painting class for the second-last week of june.

Yes it's still working. Come and join.

Nice work. Here are some of my examples. The beauty of thumbnails is that you don't have to worry about making it look pretty and by doing them, you are creating a short cut once start with your final piece. By that I mean, you know for sure the composition and how the things are going to work, all you have left is to worry about making it look good. How to go from here? We can chose one of the thumbnails and then proceed with the larger piece.

Keep on working some more on thumbnails, that way we can chose really good ideas to work on. About 20 thumbnails.
By the way, I like your 3rd on the right, 3rd on the left-cool spider/creature/robot? but environment is bland. I'm digging
the 5th on the left however, all the buildings are the same sizes so there is no focal point and no contrast in many of
    your thumbnails.

Mittin, try studying from the nature and images. Start observing things to see the values, contrast, etc. We'll cover that later once we start working on the environment itself. Just a few pointers. Anything that's close to us will have higher contrast, deeper shadows and highlights, sharper. Mid ground will have less and background barely any and atmospheric effects will start to show.

For all of you that didn't start your thumbnails, I want you to read this and try implementing it in your thumbnails.

I will run a test with some of you soon on livestream so we can start with our work. I'll help you guys with composition, starting with your thumbnails
by demonstrating how I do it and you guys can ask questions afterward.

    OK, here's my first batch.
I liked InCOUM's idea of working on these with markers, so I christened my new sketchbook with a few ideas.

I'm signed up on livestream as 'bitjockey'. I couldn't find the 'follow channel' button either, so I've just bookmarked the channel in firefox.

    Cool

more thumbnails for awhile.. I tried to aplicate the information from the links above and don't repeat the same mistakes of my previous thumbs(i know that some of them are still too grey =/! sorries!).

If DAMJAN doesn't reply during the following days.. i'll continue uploading more thumbs lol

..also I found an interesting book about landscapes: "Digital Landscape Photography" by john & Barbara Gerlach, it has some comments/images that could be useful for some people !

    Take care!

    - Claud

*i like the first ones(from 1 to 7), and i hate the 13(don't make comments about that one pls! )

InCOUM, your: 4, 6, 10, 12, 15 are my favorite from the second round. But out of them all, 12 is the best. Very strong composition in these. 6-has a potential to be great too.

bitjockey, your one with the waterfall is interesting. I like the curve that it creates. Continue with more sketches.

Do you guys see why we are doing many thumbnails? When Incoum did his first 10, he was just warming up his brain to think creative and in forms, second round produced a lot better number of quality thumbnails. Once we all choose one thumbnail that we are going to work on, we'll long into livestream and start with the project. Most likely we'll do this over the weekend for hour or two when we are all free.
