    ROUND #288, Surprise Defense Strategy

    topic:

    ROUND#288, Surprise Defense Strategy

this week is a bit of an open interpretation round. by that i mean you will have a loose set of rules to follow but a lot of the design, and creature concept will be left up to you.

the rules are these. the creature your designing must be fragile and vulnerable to physical damage or death. because of its fragility it has developed an unusual defensive strategy that keeps predators from harming it. so, your task is to invent this interesting defensive ability, and show it in action.

so like i said its a pretty open freestyle kinda week. so get crazy and try to get really creative.

    requirements this week...

    - the creature must appear fragile, and physically vulnerable.

    - you must show an unusual defensive strategy for your creature that keeps it alive.

    Deadline:

    February 12th 7:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    Finals go here... http://conceptart.org/forums/showthr...19#post3641419

Hi everyone! I'm new on this forum and I decided to try COW this week. I did a really quick sketch of my idea. I waould like to do a creature inspired of a rabbit and a praying mantis because everything cute as a rabbit looks innofensive and the shape of a praying mantis doesn't seem to be so strong. My defense strategy is that this creature as a long tail that distract its predator. This tail is actually removable, but its skin is removable too. So the tail is quite long, wich is usefull because it makes distance between the creature and its predator. Althrough, as the first couch of the skin goes with the tail, the predator thinks it has get the creature but it's not, so it give time to it to run away. Voilà! I'll be there soon with a better sketch. This one was only to kinda remember my idea!

I found this link, has some prity cool inspiration if anyones having trouble with ideas. The hagfish defence is prity effective especially, plus it's prity funny trying to watch fish eat it.

Here's my little critter. To defend themselves they puff out their fur like a pufferfish. Not a very effective defence, but that's the surprise for the predator as the little balls of fur have a gland that produces a nasty toxin which when mixed with their saliva becomes lethal. They then lick their coats, covering themselves in the mixture so before the predator can clamp with the deadly blow, it recoils. They must coat themselves regularly, but at night this isn't possible due to sleep and this is when the cleverest of predators takes its chance. Don't know if I'll get it all finished but I thought I'd give this brief a go.

i thought this might be a funny one,

this frog like creature has these huge gushy anime eyes, it hypnotizes its hunter with them, making them think he is all cute and cuddly... and then *BAM* this things eyes get bigger and explode in a mess of burning acid all over you. (the eyes eventually grow back too)

Alrighty! I came up with a marsupial looking critter. Kind of a kangaroo meets rat meets ferret. His unique defense strategy is his nose. When predators get close this guy can fill air sacs in his nose- they end up looking like giant balloons on his face. I also thought about having markings on the air sacs that look like eyes? Not sure if I can make that work though.

Great ideas so far everyone! Love NickyBeats exploding frog eyeballs! lol

That rightmost sketch is cracking me up Daniel. I'm curious about that one. So what, when predators come near he cums in their eye?

Paolo13 - i was wondering where you were taking that design! very cool idea! so the swarm forms a giant beasty? very awesome!

Daniel Hurd - awesome sketches!! love the idea! and i believe that iambanana was referring to the far right sketch, because it does slightly resemble a penis

Renart - Nice idea! About the creature - his eyes look evil - that kind of narrowness, it ruins the "innocence" a bit... The way the narrowed eyes combine with the long nose gives it a creepy notion, something alien, evil alien. That's not a wanted effect in that case.

Cabbyl - Very nice work, the creature looks fragile and vulnerable, and his defense strategy seems fitting, though it feels like something I've already seen/heard. When you think of ideas, don"t stop at the first one that looks good - put it aside and try to dig for more, even when there seem to be none, usually the ones that come later on are the best. And if not, well, you can always go back to the one you've put aside...

Daniel Hurd - The creature looks cool. I like the positioning too. Try to think of all the features your creature must have to function properly, and not put stuff in just because they look cool. For example - it'll be very hard for your creature to "digs grubs and other slimy bugs out of rotting logs and leaf litter" for food with these stump legs and this camel-nose-mouth thing. Great concepts are the ones you can believe existing, no matter how strange they look, and the details are important.

Stinkfist - Love your way of thinking. The creature is kinda Pokemon-style. Cool.

Paolo13 - Very interesting way of approaching the subject. And I like your style.
