I'm Mannyhaatz and this is my new and improved sketchbook! I originally had an account here 5 years ago and went by the name WantsToBeA2dArtist (before the revamp happened, before my entire gallery got deleted). I have a sketch book on deviantART AND CRIMSON DAGGERS, but I wanted to expand my studies to a more professional atmosphere so I can be critiqued harder and much more often. This site has a larger following so....makes sense, right?

Anyways, let's get to the nitty gritty; I'm about to transfer all of my work as of January 30th from CRIMSON DAGGERS tonight to get everyone caught up with my progress and focus.

I am revamping my deathline and sketchbook to accommodate my new goals, my new habits, my new future.

I am currently reading many of the Loomis books but the majority of my studies came from "Heads and Hands" (that would be the reason for the head spamming. Haha). My sketch book is lacking original character concepts and other creative works. However, nearly all of my sketches are drawn from my imagination, and are application sketches, cementing my studies in my head.

I am taking a life drawing class this semester, so many of my uploads will consist of charcoal drawings and gesture drawings. I am a part of a two man partnership on CRIMSON DAGGERS, so alot of the posts will also contain challenges between us and characters with attributes randomly selected n a character generator. This solves the Lack of Creativity problem that has plagued me for so long!

I would like to have many critiques in the future! Until, then I will continue posting daily!!

I'm studiyng loomis too, really great to begin with, what I would suggest is that you draw with a lighter line at first and then reinforce just the important ones, I hope that makes sense

oh.... like contour line? I think I understand. Sort of like drawing with purpose; planning ahead and really thinking about the strokes before you apply the strokes on paper...

Hello, Yea, Loomis rocks! It seems you have the same problem as i do, jaws, especially when the character is looking up, its a killer pose. maybe try to draw some skulls, it helps to understant the form and proportions. And when you're doing those cross sections for the eyebrow and middle line, maybe draw them all around the head, that helps me at least. Keep it up!!

It's hard to explain because english it's not my primary language, it's like, you do the construction lines really soft, barely visible, and after you have everything lay out you just reinforce the important ones, the real drawing, without the construction lines, I really hope that makes sense

Yeah, I've learned A LOT from him! Yes, I have gotten better with that angle, but clearly, it still isn't correct. I was starting to settle on that pose....thank you for the advice, and bringing that back to my attention!

Two life studies of a model and two updated entries from my sketchbook.

My charcoal studies of the model are improving; I'm learning to build the body using a square/cube method. Works wonders when drawing from a foreshortened perspective.

Practiced drawing heads using pen so I wouldn't be tempted to erase mistakes...helps me focus on line more. I also practiced drawing heads no refs. with fully mapped out features.

I need to produce more work faster per day. Gotta really try harder. This is frustrating.

Please, all advice and critique is welcome...

I know how frustrating can be, but you have to get over it, about the heads try to mix referenced and non ref studies, so you can compare and see what you're doing wrong, when referencing don't just copy but try to understand.I'll wait for more!

Ok, that's a good idea; i rarely draw heads from "reference" because they always become direct copies. I 'm going to start using a reference and mix it up a bit in my sketchbook.

Nice studies there. If you are practicing heads (angles and features) be sure to check Proko videos on YT. It helped me a bit (although I'm a beginner too). There is also another site for gestures called posemaniacs.

Happy to help , after you make your studies remember to apply it on things from imagination, so you can fix what you learned. I don't know Faragasso material but if you like it keep with it, but i highly recommend Michael Hampton for anatomy, he makes it really simple IMO.
And I just saw that you update your original post, I think your goal is insane but please prove me wrong! Don't stop!

Another great idea! That's what I attempted to do with my head studies, and like you mentioned before, I should do more heads from actual references to understand what I am doing wrong then correcting upon them.
Your advice goes hand in hand, which is very helpful, as it is convenient!
What I want to do with head and facial construction, as well as figures sometime in the future, is to draw from reference, then no ref (applying what I have observed), and reviewing material in a book (loomis more than like for heads)
Faragasso's Drawing the Human Figure is my first book on figures besides Figure Drawing For all It's worth...so it's hard to compare usefulness. I will definitely look at Michael Hampton's book on anatomy as well.

Thank you! I've heard of Proko videos, but haven't really used it...sounds like it may be of some use! I use posemaniacs and pixelovely for gestures; a very nice site indeed!

I see a buttload more confidence already and it hasn't been long at all! that 20-30min sketch looks spot on and your refless faces are becoming more realistic with every one

Good that you're analyzing your work critically, you are your own greatest enemy. Look through the paper backwards through a light if you have to. Excuse my hiatus, had to deal with school work and burnout. ANYWAYS, I researched a bit and found a direction in my studies so that they aren't so blind.

As always: 30sec,60 sec gestures and NEW!: PERSEPECTIVE OOOOOOOOoooOOO! hahaha breaking out the comfort zone....and I am beginning a new method of studying figures: I am sticking with ONE book for my core anatomy study. I will supplement from other sources once I progress.
