    King of Spades

    Working on the king of Spades. Did some research on the Spade, apparently the strongest card in the deck is the Ace of Spades, that's why we have the phrase "you have it in spades". Also the spades design may have come from the symbol of a sword, so made my king a war king. And in the tarot deck he symbolizes a lawyer or sometimes a judge, so giving him an imposing courtroom look. Eventually his colors will be black and green for the German card deck.

    Hey mouzzi, in dungeons and dragons half-elves have the same ears as elves, not bigger, nor smaller, just the same, so be creative as wanted, the real diference, is that they have some caracteristics as men and elves alike, taller than elves, can grow beard, low-light vision, curiosity and ambtions as humans, love for magic of nature as elves...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-el...s_%26_Dragons), and hey nice idea!!!

    Never done a chow before, and seen as everyone is showing rough stuff heres what i got so far. Its a human king of spades.

    I know his right hand is completely wrong, need to work a lot more on the pose and design before i start to focus on the rendering.

    Here is my concept.

    I wanted to do something a little... different. I hope it still fits within the guidelines. My idea is that the Queen of Diamonds rules this realm which is sustained by the energy of a Red Diamond. The Queen herself was placed into the center of the Diamond so that it may suck a royal lifeforce from her, and instead, give her the ability to plant the seeds of new, smaller diamonds (called Jacks!) The King of Diamonds would sort of play the role of a gardener, who rules over this process and makes sure that the world is getting the amount of life that it needs from the Queen.

    Pretty rough, but I'm trying to work with it.

    Really loving the different takes on this. My last effort at Chow was a bit of a disaster but it sure is fun to do.

    hey, nice topic.
    i'm trying to make my kings so that they have only upper bodies attached to each other - somewhat taking literally the illustration on most of the playing cards.
    im still thinking about stitching them together and adding a little necromantic tone.
    clothes would make the core idea less obvious so i might keep them in this 'conan'ic clothing.

    cz64 - Great idea, I'd definitely stick with it. Maybe make the gestures a little more reflective of the suit and the kings personality.

    I really like the idea. Just make sure your design reflects royalty. Right now I'm only getting sugar plum fairy and not so much a queen. Your story behind it explains it well but the design must also support the story. Just giving you a little bit more of a heading.

    Great stuff from everyone so far. I would offer more critique on everyones work but im currenty not in front of a computer to do so. I'm really surprised not more people went a different race other than human. Keep up the great stuff!

    Got the basic form together and now I'm experimenting with different helmets and weapons. I'll post more once I find a bunch more. I need to keep the royalty aspect in mind despite this being some kind of battle armor for the king :b

    King of Hearts btw, the symbols are still a bit vague.

    MasterTroglodyte - Cool sketches! I like the most center one

    Next wip. There are still some issues with perspective and proportions, but i'll fix that later, now it's just a colorscript

    Hey Nizzy G, quick question, I'm kind of at a stand still as far as my king of spades goes:

    And I really like the painterly, 3Dish look to your artwork, is there a painting demo or tutorial somewhere online that I could reference?
    I watch Artgerm's demos a lot but his isn't really as painterly as yours.

    @delightful_piffle: This has also eluded me. I find that many people that have a painterly style, will paint over the lines of a really rough sketch and usually at 80-100% opacity ( I also find that most of them have a background in traditional painting). Since all of your work, that I have seen, focuses heavily on VERY neat and clean line work (which is great by the way), that would be my first suggestion. Try to avoid lines, use them only as a guide. Of course, make sure that everything is where it should be in the line work first, but then paint right on over it. I started a new process which I have gotten very excellent results, where I paint over the lines, but at a lower opacity and I layer it on, build up the values and go from there.

    Here is a link of the end result: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iRURDPSN90...970/header.jpg

    Been lurking on CA for some time now. I think I ought to start doing CHOW's. I went with the Jack of Diamonds. And I guess he's a Thief/Assassin type. Just a basic sketch. I think I have the details I want with this one. Head might be a bit too small, but I can fix that in a jiffy.

    Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Nobody made good art by coloring in between the lines.

    So my theme is I guess fantasy Russian..... Don't know why really, just really like the way the Russian clothing looks so here are a few roughs, I haven't decided which one to go with yet.

    Let me know what you guys think... maybe help me decide. The sitting queen of hearts is holding a lamb, for your info.
    Hush, little child, don't be afraid;
    As shadows twist and mind plays tricks;
    Won't you please come out to play;
    Not real screams, you're imagining things;
    Find what was hidden by the light of day;
    These nightmares are real, only in your mind;
    How slowly time ticks, when you're held by pixi tricks.

    Keira-chan, I like the queen of hearts but I think her silhouette could use a little work. Maybe have her extend her hand out like in the first one?
