    Philipopotamus'' Sketchbook

Hi My Name is Philipe and I am an Animation Student in Cape Town South Africa, currently on my 2nd year of studies. I'm here to get better and learn more. I don't know yet what i will be going into when I graduate but right now I"m leaning more toward the concept side of things.

Well that's enough talk here's a painting I did yesterday it is a study on Martin Victor's "Hero of the Kulikov Battle"
The one in the below that is a drawing for a little job i did.
The last one is a concept for a fantasy landscape, that i did in December.

Hey here are a few updates, I went through the human skull again, it feels like I learned almost nothing the first time!
I did a very quick little portrait (the lady's face looks like it is melting on one side ).
I also went through a bit of the torso.
I also did a study of a chair outside my house.

Hi I just did a few portrait sketches today from some Russian paintings. I tried using the planes method by Andrew Loomis.

Hi again I've got small WIP which I'm thinking of turning into A concept piece.
Please feel free to critique it and tell me if there are any improvements that can be made to the composition.

Hey mate. You got the right attitude, keep trying and don't get discouraged, it all adds up in the end ( or at least so I'm told, cause I didn't get there neither ) So you know, Loomis, Bridgeman, Hogart, all that stuff, and specially, my advise to understand structure quickly, or as quickly as one can, would be try to think of the interrelationship of the diferent masses and don't get a stiff idea on how something is suposed to look, if you apply this and understand the basic interrelation of the diferent body masses rather than trying to learn each and every muscle, you'll get far in no time.

    Cheers!

hi and congrats on your firsts posts

the first post is nice, i like the childrens, cute style

you're doing the right way to get better, drawing and drawing

the portraits are showing your talent

as a critic: to get your line quality better, you could do less furry lines (when you do many little strokes to get a line)

be confident on your strokes, force yourself and sharpen that pencil

    don't stop posting

I finally did some arm studies although i'm still a bit confused with what goes where and how. Tomorrow I will do a few more.
I also did some life drawing at pixelovely, the 1 hour class and i did a few photo studies of mountains in Nepal.

Hey Zou thanks for the crit! Yeah i have very poor line quality. I tried to do these gestures with the least amount of lines i can right now.
I do tend to use my pencil until all of the graphite is gone, that's when I remember I am supposed to sharpen it. Thanks for reminding me!

Hey guys, been a while! I was doing the #306 CHOW and this week I've been quite busy doing a few wall designs for a Children's daycare. Well here are some of my quick 30s, 1min and 5 minute gestures and I also did a few 1min animal gestures. I've been keeping an eye on the line-quality too trying to draw with fewer chicken scratch lines

Hi everyone here are some more studies. I did a few more arm studies and then went on to the shoulder masses, so many things make so much sense now... I also did a color study from a pic and a portrait its been a while since i drew a face.

Today I tried Sculptris for a while and made two heads (although they are quite incomplete). It was a good exercise to get more 3d knowledge of facial features.
I also sis a quick painting of a landscape from my imagination.

Today was my first day back in college and i took the train again and started sketching people. It was very weird, I have lost the hang of sketching people in the outside world while they are unaware of my sketching. The second is a work in progress, just an illustration exercise in drawing muscles (especially the arms)

Here is an Update on yesterdays WIP. I spent too much time on the face trying to get it right and redid it a couple of times. Then I just went back to my original plans.

Today I did a few sketches of people on the train, so here are some South African faces for ya, I feel like I'm getting into it now its getting a bit easier. I also did a concept for a little round character, this is for a challenge my college friends and I do every week.
