    Nebulum's Sketchbook - Posting Daily

I had made a sketchbook a few days ago but I noticed that all of the images I had were too large. I figured I would just make a new one with smaller images so it isn't such an eyesore to look at.

My background: Background: I'm 24. I started doing art at 20 and quit after a short while only to pick it up again at 22. Since then I've been doing it off and on but I've been wanting to take it more seriously. I go to a University where I study history but I am able to take art electives. I'll be graduating in Spring and I want to continue go to Pasadena Art Center for Entertainment Design. I wanted to apply this February but I just didn't feel like I was ready so hopefully I'll be applying in October of this year. Until then, I want to take this year to buckle down and really improve my art and prepare my portfolio. I am weak at doing vehicles and environments so I will try and focus on doing those things. I want to try and submit sketches everyday.

I watch a lot of tutorials on youtube and one mentioned that this is a good place to go to improve your artwork. So here we go.

Thanks. I definitely prefer fantasy over scifi but I like both.

This one is continuing the theme for my portfolio around the ape/frog -like alien from the first post. The flying squid is their flying transport on their world. I'm going to do an evolution of the species from primitive to advanced because Art Center wants to see past, present, and future in your portfolio. This is the alien in its earlier and more primitive state.

Thanks! I watch Sinix a lot. He is very talented and self taught. This is the video where he mentions this website and talks about how he developed over the years. He has a lot of great videos.

FZD tutorials are also really good but they are also on youtube to promote the school so naturally they will be somewhat limited but still very informative.

Jason Chan is also an amazing character designer. He doesn't have many videos but they are still worth watching

And this last one isn't really someone to subscribe to but they've worked for Blizzard and this is a solid speed painting video.

Sorry about that. The website kept giving me an error. I didn't know that it was delayed.

Doing hair today. I am terrible at drawing women in general.

Here are a few older images too. A couple from my life drawing class and one from my beginning oil painting class ( I did a caracature of Nicolas Cage for my final).

I've been looking at some other sketch books and like the gestural style. I want to do more things like that. I just turned my brain off and drew this thing today. It was quite cathartic since I'm not feeling well. I've been watching more of Sinix's old sketchbook and noticed that he tried switching to mostly using pen so I figured I'd give it a shot as well with a micron pen. I guess it forces you to draw better and work off your mistakes since you can't erase. I usually get very self critical when I draw and put myself in a bad mood because I feel like I'm not drawing well enough but letting go like this and not worrying what the end product looks like is nice. I think this is what doodling should be like most of the time otherwise it becomes a laborious and taxing task.

On another note, I really need to practice faces. I've looked at the Andrew Loomis book on faces and hands so I have an idea of how to draw them. Mine always end up with a massive cartoon-like nose. I think I'll try drawing more faces and playing around with pen and different types of shading.

Just playing around with micron pen and doing shapes and gestural stuff. I will be getting back to doing more photoshop stuff soon hopefully and putting in some potential portfolio work.
