Starting a sketchbook on here to post studies, sketches, WIPS and stuff like that. Right now I will start with some recent studies from the past couple of days.

Fantastic start! If I would say anything it would be to pay attention both to contact shadows, specially on the bug's "feet", and also on the depth/level of details on the fish's eye, eyes are one of the first points of focus and should be the most believable part of a realistic painting IMHO. Anyways, great stuff! MORE! [2]

I found this image of a man walking up a dive line, and thought it was a cool image but it also matched the atmosphere and mood of a piece im starting soon. So I did this study mainly focusing on the mood of it.

LOTR screen cap study.
It was fun painting Gandalf's hair with that lighting.
I will probably do a few of these in the near future.

great work here, i like your rough paintings, try working on one when you are super nitpicky about the edges and then come back to the quick rough stuff, hope to see more! also thumbnailing is a great way to try out a bunch of compositions!

Thanks for commenting on my sketchbook.

Those are some nice landscape studies. One suggestion tough: try to push the sharpness/detail of the foreground in your images, it tends to greatly increase readability.

Your other studies are also good, I especially like Gandalf and the yellow fish close-up.

Sweet studies Joel! I like your approach in the landscapes with the hard edges in the foreground and the soft egdes in the background. I read on Robh Ruppel's blog about one approach he's been trying which involves including lots of texture information in the far distance as well to push that sense of space, maybe try experimenting with that as well to get an even deeper sense of space.

Beer watercolor still life i painted for my brother's birthday. Some white gouache was added for some highlights.
I've also included a watercolor portrait of my nephew, which I painted over the holidays.

Beautiful studies! You have some really inspiring work. I really hope I can make paintings like you one day.

I adore the landscapes. Also, I completely disagree with Tea's comment. Increasing the sharpness would take away from the awesome painted quality and conflict with the strong focal points that create depth perception effortlessly. Photoshop tricks are not what makes a well composed painting, it's thought and mileage, which are certainly present throughout this thread. Love it.

I love the crisp feel to your digital work, especially those fish. Your watercolours are beautiful too and you haven't overworked them (as is always the temptation with watercolour). I'm impressed at how convincing the watercolour glass picture is as it seems like that sort of thing would be a pain in the arse to do in watercolour.

SpaceJelly - thanks I wasn't really happy with how the glass watercolor's shadow turned out. a little muddy.

Worked on this photo Study a bit more, but im calling it done so i can move onto other things. Some of these studies are random and some have to do with projects I'm currently working on but the main purpose is to get into a sort of groove of doing a study everyday. Eventually I will do more and more thematically focused studies, as well as more polished and drawn out studies done from life.

I've also included another card illustration I created for Fantasy Flight Games' card game: 'The Hobbit: On the Doorstep'.
