    Late Nights and No Sleep

Hey! Hi, I'm a long-time lurker. Figured I'd finally grow a pair and join the community. Thus, the sketchbook! My name is Beola and I'm an 18-year old Visual Arts student at a community college, currently in my first year. I've been drawing since the age of 3, but it started out as a hobby for the most part. I decided to get serious about it in 8th grade, and I got my ass kicked into shape during high school. I'm still getting my ass kicked into shape. I'm not "disciplined" enough, and I'm majorly inspired by a lot of members here. I'll use that as momentum to keep going!

I did want to go to School of Visual Arts, Pratt, or what have you, but I can't afford it. I planned on majoring in 3D Animation, but instead of going to an expensive-as-hell art school, I'm thinking about transferring to a 4-year SUNY college, doing workshops and taking individual classes.

In any case, any and all critiques are welcome! I'm looking forward to it and I'm also looking forward to meeting new people!

Gonna start out with a man I spontaneously drew on the bus to school and some studies that I did not too long ago, mainly Loomis and Bridgman. Next up will be still-life contours.

Sorry for the occasional suckage in quality. My scanner ain't all that sexy.

Ven S: Thank you! I'll definitely be posting more. Hopefully everyday. xD

Still-life contour assignments! Done with marker. These were super fun to do and I learned a lot.

Bah! Some studies I did last night. I'm trying to get the hang of painting digitally. Not too bad-ish. Lastly, a character I've been working on for a small bit.

I'll be posting up more after I return home from my brother's wedding! Hopefully it doesn't last more than 3 ~ 4 hours. x.x

Midterm week is coming up, so I've been studying heavily. I apologize for the lack of activity. >.<

A couple of doodles I did in 2D Design class, and some Bridgman studies.

Whoo! I really need to update much more frequently. D:

    1) Tyler, a character I drew last November. I'll get back to her eventually, whenever that may be.

2/3) Started to do hand studies and then female torso studies. Fun, fun.

    4) I sketched these up last night in Photoshop without any refs. I'm actually quite proud of 'em. ;_;

    5) Doodled a not-so-serious SP in my drawing class last semester during break.

A few more torso studies (crappy scanner, my bad). Got a little bored with that and decided to try my hand at digital painting using refs. I used Paint Tool SAI for the bird and Photoshop for the eye. I'm not sure which program I enjoy using the most. I'm sort of leaning toward Photoshop because I'm more familiar with it, but SAI is pretty fun.

I'll attempt digi painting the human figure tonight, after class. Speaking of class, spring semester just started and I'll be taking Painting I, Drawing II, and Art History. @_@

I'll explore more active poses with the female warrior down there too. Seems a little boring, don'tcha think? I can't be afraid!

    Yay college! :D

I have more studies that I've done and fun doodles, but I shall scan those later. For now, I leave you with this! A homework assignment done for my Drawing II class. My phone camera is poot, so I apologize if the quality is a little derp.

    Late Nights and No Sleep

Ooooh man, Drawing II is trying to kick my butt! I mean, it's kicking my butt, but in a good way. It's all beneficial in the end, and quite fun. But dayum, on 24x36 drawing paper? Killer, yet very enjoyable.

Apologies that I haven't gotten around to scanning in my sketchbook stuff. I've gotten into the habit of sketching people wherever possible. Fun fun!

Hey fellas! Sorry about not getting back to you sooner.

Artpotion: Thank you. I'm still working on making it muscle memory, y'know? I studied from books by Bridgman, Loomis, and now Hogarth. But in my opinion, studying from life is the best. Using the books to locate the underlying structure of the human form during figure drawing sessions is super helpful.

Kauil: Thank you, but I'm still not dishing out as many studies as I want. Getting there though. And about the digital paintings... I want to get a hang of painting traditionally before jumping into the digital medium.

    1) The current assignment for Drawing II, keeping track of progress made.

Everything else: recent pages from my sketchbook. Most are from imagination, and others are people I drew on the bus. Bumpy, bumpy roads... Oh well!

A few Hogarth head studies and a ref-less pose before I book it to class. Drew over one of my little sketches from last night to see if the proportions were off. I'll put up more later on today. Not super exciting, but eh! Self-improvement! I'm just going to focus on the head for a few days. Eyes, mouth, nose, ears, etc.

Recently went to the Metropolitan Museum in the city to expand my visual library. Amazing, amazing! Sure, I was pooped by the end of the day, but I spent the majority of my time drawing without an eraser (super helpful). Probably gonna go back sometime next week.

Also, I'm working on a life-size figure drawing in my Drawing II class. Pretty stoked about how it'll turn out!

The last figure drawing of the semester. Satisfied with the result, although I'd have preferred it to be a 3-day pose instead of 2. I'm super busy with finals and everything. Studying my butt off and what have you.

I've gotten myself a summer job, and it's my first ever. I'm trying to prioritize things and such, now that the semester is over. A bit more free time, yes, but my job is a tad overwhelming at times. Leaves me emotionally exhausted by the end of the day. Once I get the hang of it, I should be fine and work days should no longer feel as long as they do.

Decided to get back into my groove and revisited a recent (but old) character. The first is the old, the second is what I'm working on now. I'm pretty excited about it!

Gone for so long!! Urghfuh >:C

I really need to become more active in this community!

A few sketches of peeps on the bus, peeps in my class, and miscellaneous stuff.
Oh, and a character I'm trying to flesh out, a portrait from imagination, and a random painting study in Photoshop.

Thanks Taha! Those were done awhile ago; I used one of George Bridgman's books. It may have been his Complete Guide to Drawing From Life... I'll have to check when I get home. But really, thank you for stopping by!

So we've been doing drawings from models for 2 weeks now, and I've just recently been introduced to dry pastels through a workshop that was held last Tuesday. This workshop was hosted by one of the professors who teaches Life Drawing on campus, and I'm taking his class next semester. Seriously excited! I've also managed to purchase a copy of Complete Guide to Life Drawing by Gottfried Bammes, so I'll be doing studies and exercises from that in the days to come.

The first two were 40 minutes each, and were done at the workshop. Spent the first 10 to 20 minutes on laying down the form, and then applied the pastel in the remaining amount of time. They're approximately 24x36 if not a tad larger.

The third was done yesterday morning in class, give or take 3 ~ 3.5 hours total. Had to fit a little over 25 students into one studio, so very limited space. It's life-size, but my easel was all funky and broken, and I couldn't get my hands on a large board. Had to make do with what I managed to get. YAY PASTELS!

I can definitely say that not all the models I've drawn were thin! A nice variety in body types, really. My only problem was that each and every semester my classes NEVER had a female model; it was only until the workshop I was able to finally draw her. Awesome people nonetheless!
