    Amara gets his life together

"Whats up" to everyone out there--I'm Amara, I'm 20 years old, and long story short--- I need to get off my ass, put in some work, and go from being a loser to a superstar; preferably in as short a time frame as possible because soon I will have to support myself. So I'm making a personal commitment to draw/paint everyday and post the fruits of my labor on here when I get the chance.

critique, comment or just drop by to take a look, all are welcome to me.

Ok day 2: Here are some life drawings I did at the Apache cafe here in Atlanta. I took advantage of their life drawing sessions there--the $5 was worth it

Yes I skipped about what? 3 days. And I'm pissed at myself for doing so because I didn't do what I said I was going to do. I stumbled on the path to self discipline but I didn't fail, so here's my second attempt at posting everyday. This is what I've been up to the past few days; charcoal studies:

My previous color work has just been colored drawings pretty much. Here I'm trying my hand at monochrome PAINTING. IE: Without pre drawn lines. Sucks, but you got to start somewhere I guess.

Value study of a rap mixtape I liked--this time I used bigger brushes in stead of trying to cover large areas with a small brush like I did in the previous post. Seemed it worked better. Overall this painting, even though its not finished; it reads fairly well to me at this early block in stage.

I have to work on really SEEING where the light is coming from and describing light and shadow more as "highlight" "halftone" "light" "reflected light" etc. When I was doing this painting, all of that seemed like an afterthought.

Whoa, I applaud your determination, but more the progress you've been making. most people walk, other kind of stroll around (me) and you just stride regardless of wether or not you step on some flowers along the way. Well I like what yo're doing, especially the last colored ones. Go go go!
For storms will rage and oceans roar
When Gabriel stands on sea and shore
And as he blows his wondrous horn
Old worlds die and new be born.

Thank you Toxic. I been fiddling around with this "I want to make something of myself" idea for a while, so its time to act on it and stop being such a slacker.

Just finished another value study. In this one I played around with the "light categories" idea from the last post. It worked out better in this one than the last one I think.

On this one I worked on being less timid with my brushstrokes. Also, I noticed that since I am using a tablet, I didn't adjust the opacity controls to pen pressure when using my stylus. That always helps tremendously when I have to blend something. But for this one I focused more on describing the planes of light well enough so that I wont have to fall back on excessive blending. Overall I am pleased with this piece although I am still working on it.

Started this one before I went to work. Finished it a few hours ago. In this one I learned to make my brushstrokes count. One thing I noticed though is that I need to pay more attention to reflected light because its almost nonexistent in this peice.

The face is kicking my ass in this one. I can never seem to get it in proportion to the body when I do these full and half body poses.

E.Badu. This time I used a drawing to get the proportions of the face right. Next time I'll use it in a full or half body pose to get the proportions right.
