O.k. so was just working on this piece and felt it needed a crop but even though the crop helped the overall read it sorta killed the asthetics...

I see a castle, men on horses, and a snowy mountain. That said, I'm still not quite sure what I'm looking at. What are those oranges and maroons? What's that white horizontal line under the caste? What's that color block below it? Where is the horizon?
As for the cropping, the first could stand to lose some of the bottom of the canvas - enough to make the format landscape. What's the story here? What's happening right now? Who's castle is that, and why is it significant? Where is this occurring? What time of day? What time of year? The answers to these will guide your composition and your color scheme.
