Will Martinez: Traditional Work . Figures, Portraits, and Landscapes

I only work digitally professionally, it's just a necessity. In oder to keep up my skill and sanity I do my personal work (art training) traditionally. I use black Prismacolor pencil to sketch and watercolor and white gouache to paint mostly. I usually paint or draw figures twice a week so i will be updating this frequently!

Here a few from this past year.

very nice work , very pro

the cowdoy is indeed well done !

do u use gouache without diluting it with water to make white spot ? or is part of the painting ?

Thank you very much for the compliment Zou and the question! I like to plan ahead and try to leave the lightest light the white of the paper, like a traditional watercolorist. Sometimes things don't go as planned and I have to go back in and bring up the whites with gouache. I will typically dilute the white and layer it to get the value I want. Sometimes, if i need a bright bright highlight i will use straight white from the tube. I usually find though that this is to light for a painting and usually use my finger to smudge it. This also allows some of the color underneath to show through and gives the white I put down a temperature which helps harmonize it with the rest of the painting.

I attached this for your reference

Love your work so far, your watercolour and gouache technique is lovely, thank you for posting about it! You can tell there is a good level of knowledge behind what you do. I'd love to see a more "finished" piece by you as well, but your gestural work is great and shows a lot of character through it so keep posting those too

20 minutes + time spent touching up the next day. Watercolor and white gouache.

Spirit: Thanks so much for the comment. I work really hard to search for new theories and design ideas (old and new) and apply them to theses studies. It's like Sargent said "You can't do sketches enough. Sketch everything and keep your curiosity fresh." These are words for any artist to live by in my opinion. This painting is a bit more finished, I probably spent another 30mins working out the painting the next day. More time was spent considering possible decisions and little time spent applying them. A good rule for painting is to think more a do less.

I am currently working on an Oil painting commission and will post the final on this thread when it's finished.
