If you're interested in becoming an environment concept artist you ned to understand perspective, composition, scale, texture, color, etc. Best way to go about it is a three-prong approach:
1) Study from nature (as in get a portable painting setup and go outside and paint - prefererably after taking a workshop or two)
2) Study great landscape painters both past and present, as well as the top concept and matte people
3) Study theory from books
A few good books on landscape:
"Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting" John Carlson
"Drawing Scenery" by Jack Hamm
"Imaginitive Realism" by Gurney (also covers a lot more than landscape)
"Drawing and Painting Fantasy Landscapes and Cityscapes" Rob Alexander
Good luck!
What would Caravaggio do?
