    BryanFR Portfolio

Hi, my name is Bryan Fogaça Rosado, I'm a visual arts student, but I'll switch to industrial design next year, cause I think will help me more in perspective and hard surfaces in which I lack both training and technical knowledge.

My main goal is to become an illustrator / concept artist in game and film industry. I play Magic the Gathering, so for me is a big influence on my style and theme. Also, in the last two years (I think) I have been watching Feng Zhu's videos on YouTube, and I have no words to describe how useful they are, and how improved my skills and vision of the profession.

My strength, I think, is the human body and faces, because is what I have studied and drawn more over the years.

I really need tips to improve my portfolio to achieve the professional look required by the industry to become a freelancer (which I already am, but never got a job :/)

Any tips and constructive criticism are welcome, thanks in advance.
    Bryan

Well the last one is good but the others are far from a professional level... the major problem is perspective as you say, they are very flat and the camera is very weak. Unfortunately this problem is very visible even in your characters, which anatomy could be much better if you knew how to draw things in 3d (and i don't see a good knowledge about muscles too), even your colors are a weak point at this stage. In short you have a lot to work on man but you are not so far as it could seem, but you really have to choose if you want to do concept art or illustration because they are 2 very different things that uses the same language (which is the ability to draw and paint, so yeah study the language for now).

Thanks Hitsu for the advices. ^^
Although I know about the differences in concept art and illustration, unfortunately, my attempts at concept are very recent and I have none ready to post. :/
But just like you said, the best thing to me for now is study, study, study.
    Thanks
    Bryan

Hey Bryan. Concept art doesn't have to be rough and look painted. What it needs to be is solves the art director's problem in short amount of time. If you can do something like your last piece in a matter of one working day. Then, make all your pieces at that level. Some concept artist who've worked on Assassin's Creed produces concept that are pretty detailed and are in the illustration level.

Your weakness is your visual library. Your environment design are "meh" and aren't inspiring. Your first piece, the design is awful and bland....It lacks so much creativity.

If I were you, I would strengthen my visual library first because you already have skills to execute ideas. The problem are the ideas.

    Thanks Majika.
Indeed, I had a conversation with my brother some time ago and he said almost the same thing, that my design is weak and the ideas are not well developed. ^^
I'm working on some studies and will be uploading more content here soon.

In my opinion, your biggest weakness is color. Keep in mind that the color of an object in shadow is not just a darker version of than color when it is in light, AT ALL. The hue will shift even if the light source is just white (which it rarely ever is). You're also using way too much black or values close to black and it's causing your images to be flat. Your misuse of texture is very force and it's hurting your work. It might be good to have references for materials and other things open while you're work so you can look at it and learn as you work. If you just paint from only what you know at this stage, your learning process will be VERY slow. Your design ideas are not bad but it's not backed by fundamental knowledge and the visually communication is weak in terms of perspective, form, lighting, mood, composition...

I say this is good intent: your understanding of the human body is very lacking, you simply need to study muscles and how they connect to the skeleton.

    Best of luck

    Recent works, 04/17/13

Since my last critiques I've been working on my weak points doing a wide range of studies, doodles and sketches. I'm also reading a lot about perspective, color theory, anatomy, and the principles of illustration, etc. I know that there's a lot to improve yet, and I'm not sure if I should post only finished pieces here so I apologize for the sketches in advance. Thanks for all that helped me so far!
