    Question subsurface scattering question

Just wondering if anyone had and information on subsurface scattering ?

Specifically to do with painting skin in photoshop. I have came across a few threads and some youtubes but mostly was either in 3D or a duplicate layer technique, I'm more after any advice on achieving the effect purely in a painter like way, whether it be value or color theory advice I don't mind either way.

Just a hard concept for me to grasp when applying colour.
Sorry I don't have any examples of my work,
I'll try to get some up when I feel ready and more confident,
I hope you can appreciate my honesty and be a little patient with my lack of contribution.

how you paint it depends on the angle of the light and what the background looks like in comparison. It can be a very subtle or obvious effect. If its skin then set up a model and pay close attention to values and hue and color changes.
Here is Jims article on it from his blog

Mainly because you're trying to think of it in terms of an isolated concept. Digital tools, due to their discreet, mathematical processes and algorithms have to isolate these various effects in an attempt to synthesize and simulate them. As an artists you have the luxury of simply seeing and deciding how much of the effect is present in a given situation and how much you want to emphasize or downplay it.
    What would Caravaggio do?

Thanks for the replies, I actually ordered Imaginative Realism the other day with a Loomis book. So coincidence of the link to the blog was interesting thanks.
