NoShot - Really like this concept! Cool pose, and I like the presence of skulls that seem to turn into buds or something. Life only grows out of things that are already dead!

Noun - Can't wait to see how this one shapes up, it's simple but it implies a lot. Very creative!

lancer - I really like this idea. Is that some kind of quantum superbaby?

I've been a LONG time lurker, but this concept is just too cool to pass up. So I'm going to jump in. I'm going with an embryonic life form, mainly because I want to play around with some amber colors, and I want to make it seem almost biologically possible. Here's my rough sketch:

hey guys, this is sort of my first time around here.
so please tell me if im doing something wrong!

i read the topic lots of time, and im pretty sure i did not find anything saying humanoid was nescessary,
so i went with a more creature-like character.
i think the drawings explain themselfs.

and im going with a little of what Benedikt said, life isnt exactly pretty flowers that smell good, theres some more mysterious , dark and fearsome aspects to it.

anyways, this is my curent stage.

@Noun: I really like this sketch, but also keep in mind that it is falling under the "creature" category at the moment and not character. If you were to submit this to finals, we wouldn't be able to put you on the poll. Now, I'm not saying to trash it, but you need a character. You could use this as some sort of prop WITH a character, like it could be what life uses to create.

Whoops, yeah I was afraid of that. I hope you don't mind me asking though. Where is the line in terms of character vs. creature? In the brief it says 'it doesn't have to be human', I figured having the face of a sleeping human child might be enough to qualify.

But, now I'm thinking I may need to make the egg somewhat transparent in the colored version, so that you can see a faint silhouette of the infant's limbs/body inside. Would that be acceptable?

These are looking awesome! Really unique ideas.

Havok and I knew going into such an open topic that it would generate very unique and abstract ideas. We want you guys to push the envelope as to how you interpret what "Life" would look like to you.

With that said this is still a Character Design challenge.

Noun You have a very cool idea, I would suggest introducing some more humanoid features, right now its reading as very abstract. Adding a faint silhouette of the infant's limbs/body inside as you suggested might help, give it a try.

Aragah Nice thumbnails! Yours is right on the border of becoming a creature, I think your first thumbnail reads as more of a character.

Sushy: I love the Bee concept, it reminds me of the Egyptians. I think if you made the bee's smaller and more of them the feeling of her being massive would be a cool concept. Although it looks good already to me.

mcreation: The high contrast character is awesome! I'm not so sure about the arms with the swords though, I think you can loose 'em but it's up to your gut in the end anyway.

giby: You might have mentioned this before but is Life the angel or the woman? It's probably the angel but I think the concept should be clearer that he represents life. I think the angels halo should glow more, to make it more godly, maybe a little larger too. Watch his anatomy as well but otherwise awesome concept work!

Quinn Simoes I agree man, it's a really cool topic and it's awesome seeing everyones interpretations. I think the biggest challenge is making an original character which reads as 'life'.

Varguy - That's really looking promising! The colors are bright and indicative of what we all think of as "life", but they're stemming from something unknowable, and a little scary. Can't wait to see the rest!

Here's my WIP, needs some more detailing. Someone let me know if this is too "creature" - I see it as an embryonic form of a god-like character, and meant to be taken literally, but I can see how it might not fit the character label:

Here's a wip of an idea Im working on.

My concept's WIP, currently established my colors.

I was going for fierce colors, with the concept based on the combination of flames and flowers,
as life is a cycle, birth and destruction to give room for new life to grow.
There's corals and branches and roots on the lower half and feathers and various epiphytes, as life is both in the sky and on/under ground/sea etc.

She's a representation of both "flame" and "flower", because life is a cycle of destruction and rebirth.
She also has reefs, roots and branches on her lower half and feathers and various epiphytes on upper half, to signify life is everywhere...

Coloured it up. Boy, am I glad I posted the almost full-res image onto here. My laptop just died on me, so I downloaded the picture on this thread onto another PC. Crisis averted. Will work on hand and feet studies.
