    Posters, covers, and adverts.

Remember when movie posters and other things could be interesting to look at?

Why does it seem that most stuff is so damn lazy with their covers/posters nowadays?

    ( Click to show/hide )

And it's not just movies that do this, videogames are just as boring!

    ( Click to show/hide )

Books too! These are current New York Times Bestsellers

    ( Click to show/hide )

Where's this going? Well how about a thread of just good posters/covers/adverts/whatever. The product doesn't matter! It could be complete trash! But as long as you feel the poster/cover is decent, then go ahead and post it!
    Hiya! Hiya! Hiya!

Its a trend. If you are into collecting painted covers as much as I am, then check out these links:

    B-movie posters: www.wrongsideoftheart.com NSFW!!

Amiga cover scans: Amiga cover gallery

Also from a practical standpoint its a helluva lot cheaper, quicker and easier to use stock photography than
to find, hire, allot time and pay an artist.

All I ever wanted to be was a VHS clamshell artist.

I agree, but I do like the "You Will Know Her Name" poster, whatever that is for. It is simple, but it's striking.
In general, I hate the "hot young actor/actress faces plastered all over the advert", though.

It's not just that it's cheaper, apparently shitty generic photo covers sell more books.

I think we had a similar discussion here quite a few months back.

When in the old days low budget cheese could bother to shell out some money for a somewhat decent illustration, it boggles the mind how more often than not, new films with more than 10 times the budgets can't be bothered with that. It shouldn't be hard to at least get the storyboard artist to draw up an interesting layout to work from!

    Awesome site, by the way.

    ( Click to show/hide )

Geez, even PORNO's could have interesting covers back then! Even a weaker painting is alot more interesting than a stock image of the cast standing on top of the logo, or just a shot of the lead's face.

Don't worry, the image should be ok to post. It's only in a spoiler because it's large.

    ( Click to show/hide )

So if he makes a boast about his penis length, what happens?

And they don't even have to be paintings. You CAN use photos of the cast and make it work. Actors just standing around CAN work when they're not just staring blankly into space in dull poses.

Even when paintings went out of style they still put work into having interesting posters!

Look at the posters for Hamburger Hill.

I can easily spend hours at wrongsideoftheart. The scans are incredible. I love being
able to see the paint strokes on VHS covers that used to sit in the store when I was a kid.

    I wanna keep yapping:

I doubt Hamburger Hill is a movie I'll ever watch, but it's still an interesting cover that gives something of a tone for the film right away. I wouldn't come into this expecting a darker movie like Full Metal Jacket. I can tell from the cover that I can expect lots of patriotism and brotherhood.

What does the Red Dawn remake's poster say? (Posted in the OP for anyone wondering.) A bunch of losers with blank expressions holding guns, waiting for the cameraman to hurry up so they can leave.

Here's the original Red Dawn poster!

Check it out! Something's HAPPENING! It's INTERESTING! I've never even SEEN Red Dawn and now I wanna know what happens! An army of Soviet soldiers parachuting down to a sleeping rural town? What are they after? What are they doing? What's gonna happen to the civilians?

I now feel like watching this movie! Mission accomplished!

Onto videogames, it seems that with franchises the only time they bother having a striking cover is when it's a new IP. Afterward, they just don't care.

Look at Dead Space's original cover: a dismembered forearm floating in a vacuum.

It stands out! It's something different from all the other games on the shelf! It gives you something of an idea of the tone it's going for, and if that catches you you'll pick it up and read the description on the back.

    Then look at the sequel.

Yep, Issac's glowing helmet. Wow. I'd like to mention that this game has the protagonist suffering from dementia while trying to evacuate a space colony that's run by a corrupt government that wants to weaponize the horrific abominations from the first game. Couldn't they have shown any of that visually on the cover? I guess after the first game making an interesting cover doesn't matter, because they've already gotten their audience.

And no, the cover doesn't even HAVE to give away backstory! The original game has a very vague cover, but the one interesting element is what draws you to it. I'm just saying they had more than enough material there they could have done something with!

It's not even that hard! It's a game about shooting monsters! Just show him do THAT!

Here's the cover for part 3.

To someone uninitiated, would you believe that from this cover that it's an action survival horror series influenced by Resident Evil 4, System Shock, and the Alien series? No, you'd think it's some Halo knockoff. It's just some guy in a weird space suit holding a futuristic gun.

I like the Carrie poster. A lot.
The Denzel Washington poster looks like every Denzel Washington poster. It's probably in his damned contract: "poster shall feature Denzel's giant head, staring intensely into the distance."
The Red Dawn remake poster is boring, derivative, and unnecessary. Just like the movie. Looking at it, you know exactly why you don't want to go see it.

I remember when I was a little kid I would be wandering around the library and pick up random books that have painted covers. Sometimes even erotic romance novels. You know those ones where it's people embraced, or a guy with a ripped body and maybe he's a pirate or medieval times and has a sword.

Oh yeah, Fabio did alot of model work for cheesy romance novels.

I can't remember the artist's name who hired him the most. I know Gurney talked about her a little bit on his blog a few months ago.

Unfortunately the link doesn't work anymore.

Either way, it's not the fact that they're photos that's the problem. It's the fact that they're BLAND that's the problem.

Anyway, I think I'm done whining, time to post a good cover again.

Having posted this, the cover for the Tarantino movie isn't bad. This one's still better.

SSssshhhh!!!...man...you guys are going to wake up dpaint!

Link was still now working for some reason Star...so here's another try: Wrong Side of the Art. And yeah, thanks for that new time sink...plus now I have to own "The Lustful Turk"...because the poster looks like a mashup of Disney's Small World and Insatiable. Not to mention it's filmed in 1001 colors! I mean...wow!

Careful! There's ANOTHER dude named James Brown. I remember learning this when I first heard of Adios Amigos, but I also did a little check on IMDB, and it's apparently this guy.

But the musician James Brown DID do the music for Black Caesar.

    EDIT:

Heh. Tell me this DOESN'T look like a videogame cover?

Does this ever strike a nerve. Has anyone seen the alternate poster art for Rise of the Guardians? If you Google posters for that movie it doesn't even show up, you have to trudge over to Gallery Nucleus's website to look at it.

    http://www.gallerynucleus.com/home/d...2#.UMOF7OTpeTM

I guess they felt the 3D versions were more representative of the movie, but that 2D version is just so sexy.

But that's what makes it cool!

Plus I doubt the majority (in Japan) wouldn't be too confused, given the way the comics industry works over in Japan. Anyone who reads Shonen Jump would have at least SKIMMED Jojo while it ran for 17 years.

Ok, I complain about bland covers, but thanks to the internet age there's stuff out there that will give you nightmares.

    http://lousybookcovers.tumblr.com/

I only post it because people are seriously SELLING their ebooks with covers like that. I don't even feel like posting them on the thread. It'd feel like I'm kicking a puppy or something.

    EDIT: Ok, just one.
