    Griffin's Sketchbook

Hello! This is my first sketchbook, heres my work and let me know what I could do to improve! I eventually want to be a concept artist and I guess this sketchbook will document what I'm doing to get there. I dont plan in going to university so critique of my work is definitely needed to keep me on track, thanks!

Im currently 19 and I'm having a 'year off' to study

Heres most of my work from this summer when I finished college.

    Good copy!

    for your figure sketches:
The little ones, from far some of them look really great
for the drawing/pen things. be carefull with mixing these media. Now it seems like filling in work, or tracing over a spencil sketch work. maybe only use pencil, or only pen.

    keep up the drawing!

Hands, hands and more hands! They're so satisfying to draw when you get them right.

So Halo 4 came out the other day and I'm a huge fan of the series so Ive been playing it loadds and neglecting my drawing in the meantime so I felt guilty and decided to draw some legs as I'm not too comfortable drawing them.

Animal studies from today. Few more studies to go until I'll try my hand at some animal concepts. Reading quite a bit of this blog has given me some more confidence approaching this area! http://characterdesignnotes.blogspot.co.uk/

Moving into some digital sketching. Ive been busy this weekend with work and going to Leeds for the day but plenty of sketches will be up soon. I've also started a sheet of concepts going off silhouettes from my insect studies. I'll finish the sheet, upload it here and my final insect piece within a few days.

    Sketches for the day.

Komodo dragons are so nice to draw, I'm going to try drawing some real dragons soon enough although I dont think im one for having dragons in my work but it can't hurt to draw a few.

Something really cool I listened to today was a speech by John Cleese about creativity, I definitely reccomend watching it, It's interesting.

Nice works. I'm really exited man.

Be more careful on your lines. Better understanding line and how to draw it you have better works.
Look at good works and analyze them,

why you don't look at some of Adolf Menzel's artworks?

By the way, amazing, Keep it up
Not every one can become a great artist,
    but
A great artist can come from every where.

Thanks very much. Yeah I definitely need to clean up my lines, I'm in the bad habit of scratching away at an area until there is some shape. Im going to do some more drawing today and use simple lines

Woah Adolf Menzel is amazing, I hadn't come across him until now, Thanks again!

I was annoyed I didn't take part in the annual self portrait day on november the 1st so I made this self portrait today, leaving it a bit sketchy as I prefer to leave brush strokes and I didn't want to spend too long rendering it. I learnt a hard lesson I've learnt a few times before though.. I wish I just had made the initial sketch right to begin with so it wouldn't look weird coming back to it after a break.

Here it is in all of its stages and the final piece.

I think I'm burnt out tonight. I really wanted to get a lot done and update my sketchbook everyday but it just seems like whatever I draw ends up looking strange so im just going to get a decent nights sleep.

    5 minute studies.

It's been a while. I don't know what was up with me last week but I just couldn't draw and in my frustration I drew until I could again. These were mainly 5 minute studies done with pencil and gone over in pen. Although xNatje said I shouldn't go over pencil studies in pen, I just had to for clarity of picture :/ The lines weren't really standing out in pencil..

Heres my work from the other day, Only got round to uploading my work now as I've been at work, working as a waiter on the weekend.

Hey, really nice work with the body studies! I especially like the life drawings. The images in #22 are great! I love those house and interior studies!
Thanks for the John Cleese speech! It was really interesting and spot on about creativity. A great reminder of what’s important and what to focus on.

Thank you both I really liked drawing those houses, I'll draw some more soon!

I'll try to develop my studies further with hands and feet, I tend to shy away from their intricacies for the sake of time. Your comments are really helping me out, thank you very much to everyone who has spent their time commenting, your advice and support is exactly what I need.

Here are some portrait studies from today, the woman with the hair piece looks really weird.. I think its the smile? The fourth is a study from 2 months ago or so (I keep finding things I haven't added yet).
