I don't think becoming a university will change much for animation. It's already been changed to a degree, which caused the most problems. Like it or not, Sheridan isn't just an animation school and taking on the title of university will help them expand their other programs. The people running the school aren't little demon spawn trying to rip money from your pockets.
The steady increase of tuition is a country wide problem much greater than this one school.

There should be some kind of protest or petition against this among the teacher and students of the animation and illustration programs against this. I am pretty sure it would be enough of a message seeing the faculty and students of their finest programs protest against such an action as a whole. If anything they should at least come to an agreement to somehow separate the animation program from such changes and somehow keep it the way it is? although I guess it has something to with government requirements that the programs have to conform somehow.

All I'm hoping is that the tuition won't spike up for the next decade or so, although I might be hoping too much. Another thing is that I don't want it to turn into another OCADU, where they push for the wrong stuff.

I don't know lamp. What other reason would they increase the spots for animation but to money grab? and 9k is substantial amount however you look at it.. It's higher than engineering programs at UofT.

Someone has to be making money off of this to explain all these changes. if the head-freaking coordinator doesn't want more than 125, the only thing that would overrule him is someone in charge, and the only reason to overrule him (at the risk of a highly reputable program) is quick money grab.

I dont think they are evil for doing this, I just hope the program doesn't suffer because of it.

I didn't realize adding 25 more people into the program would change so much. Didn't seem like that big of a deal to me, but I'm probably just a bit naive. :I

Just want to double check: is everyone's transcript requirement still and "Outstanding?" I'm a little worried about that. x:

    Mine says sent to destination.
If you paid and it got approved before the due date, no need to worry. your school is probably just dragging their butts.

Where do you see transcript outstanding? Is that on access Sheridan? All I see is under consideration when I click application status

I don't have great confidence in my portfolio. But then again, I have been beaten down over the years, so maybe I just have self esteem issues? Which would mean I'm actually better than I think and therefore have a good chance of getting in? Or whatever. I just don't really, meh.

There's one more thing we got me nerve wrecked, the rejections are normally last to get issued and normally the acceptances are the ones first sent out.

@xDrawnxtoxDeathx Access Sheridan -> myStudentCentre -> Application Status -> View Outstanding Admission Requirements

@Uptown I feel like I have a much better shot than I did last year, but I'm not expecting anything so I won't be terribly disappointed. Again. ><

By the way, what's everyone's plan if you don't get in?

@xKotu - I'm probably going to get a full-time job to try and make a year's worth of rent for an apartment in oakville, really practice on my art skills and try to get in again! Except next time around I'm going to give myself a lot more time to do the portfolio. I know people are saying a month is enough, but honestly I felt pretty rushed...I'd like to start around August/September next time around and work without as much pressure.

Also I've heard a lot of people get in on their second try. I guess this makes sense because you know what to look out for the second time around that you may have overlooked the first time.

Also, I was wondering this, I want to improve my skills as an artist but a lot of the programs in my area (other than APW) aren't quite right for me. Do you guys think the internet is a good enough teacher? I'm considering just using books and websites like this one to help me hone my skills and make me ready to take on first year animation if I can get in next year (or even this year!). Any self/internet taught artists out there have any advice for me?

@Uptown: I'm hopeful but not confident. I'd peg my chance at 25%

    @xKotu: I'm going to seneca.

@everyone else: We had l4d2 steam day Last sunday and it was great. I got some decent footage but I don't know if anyone wants to see us bumbling around. We are planning a TF2 game this Friday, so anyone interested please add me on steam: ironxo. Remember TF2 is free.

Also anyone curious about Left 4 Dead 2, it's on sale for 4.99 (literally 1 day after I buy it for 19.99) i highly recommend l4d2 and we will definitely be doing future games.

Well the internet has been the greatest teacher I was ever offered. In all seriousness though, I have to say that getting better at art is a lot simpler and more straightforward than people make it out to be. It really is practice and grind time, so let's now try and center a schedule around improving in the areas sheridan's portfolio requires. It is split into four sections; Observational Drawing, Animation, Storyboard, and Layout. There is no easy way out to anything, and I believe the best way to tackle it is to practice the tools required for layout and observational drawing. Now what I did was something really simple and that is pretty much practice, practice, practice. I made a daily schedule for myself to about an hour of gestures(30 - 60 secs) a day and then after that do some longer poses(5-10min). The most essential part of figure drawing is the beginning which is gestures so I highly emphasize this, read books from Andrew Loomis, Vilppu, Bridgman, and Hampton and by read I mean read instead of just flip through looking at the pictures. When doing studies of the book, read it and then do copies of the diagram which explains this principle and then try it yourself when doing life-drawing.

For perspective Dunnstar already had it covered with the book but just reading it ain't enough, again, practice makes perfect. Practice basic things like drawing 100 cubes in perspective and building up forms with cubes, Practice putting objects in those cubes, practice drawing the cubes freehand and without a ruler, practice drawing cubes without vanishing points, practice drawing ellipses over and over again keeping in mind what ellipse you want to make, then practice your cylinders and vary the ellipses that making the cylinder up. Learn to draw primitive shapes from every angles through constant practice. Another exercise I suggest is to get a stack of books or something similar and draw it as a simplified box and study how it recedes into space and alter its angles, Take something like a cup and draw it from different eye levels, see and develop an intuition on how ellipses transform in space. Learn to Draw and render basic forms like an egg, see if you can do it with precision.

After you develop a competence with drawing forms in perspective or forms in general that is when you are ready for anatomy so don't jump to it too quickly. Anatomy is made up of these basic forms and if you can't draw em well, anatomy will be bothersome and look sloppy.

The single word I said the most throughout the entire passage was practice and that is all there really is to it. If you put in the time and hard work you will definitely improve. The art world is pretty competitive and if you are not prepared to draw eight hours or more a day, you will fall behind.

@ Dunnstar & Uptown: Congrats on getting into Seneca!

@pepe-silvia I think I'll be doing the same. Also, the internet is a great teacher if you can figure out where to look and how to use it as a resource. kamikazel33t has it right so I'd say follow his advice. I would recommend getting into an art group though where you can have a live art environment. I always feel like that motivates me to be around like-minded people who want to improve. Plus, fresh eyes to point out where your studies are going off. :d

Im almost ashamed to admit, that I have not drawn at all since I submitted my portfolio! Im a terrible terrible person D:.... lol. I guess I kind of wanted a little vacation from it. I mean, it doesnt matter what it is, doing something litterally 24/7 for a month straight, burns you out even if you love it. I have a lot of projects in mind that Ive been itching to get started on, so I'm thinking this weekend is as good as any to get back into it, so WHOS WITH ME!? >

As for drawing? Yeah, i've been keeping it up pretty well. only 1x every 2 weeks for life drawings. I gotta upgrade that.

I'm actually at figure drawing right now, trying to decide if I should sit near the front where I can't see the amazing people drawings or in the back where they can't see my terrible ones.

Wherever you sit, you should try talking to some of the other artists during the break, they wont bite! At least not all of them lol. Just ask for some pointers, or maybe just ask to see their work and see how they are drawing the model compared to your drawings.

And Life drawing on a friday night?? Sorry I forget where you're from, but I wish the GTA was more like that. It seems the majority of life drawing places I've looked into, only offer sessions during Tuesday and Wednesday. What places do people go to for their life drawings?

Wow, no way! Excellent! Looks like this is strictly Toronto, was hoping more around the GTA, but excellent nonetheless. When my program at Sheridan finished, our teacher handed us a paper with some good places he knew, and he told me about the one right across the street from Shoppers World in Brampton since he taught a few classes there. Anyone been there? I think I really want to check it out, especially since it has open studio time. It has a membership fee, but access to the studio facilities sounds pretty cool.

I went there last year when I needed to do life drawings! they dont always do nude life drawings though. Some days they have clothed models but its only $10 and the room is small but can get congested at times. Its a small place, I missed it the first time I looked for it but then I looked up and saw the tiny sign on the glass haha.
